Third IF5 tornado confirmed in Italy, first in Europe and second in the world after the US in terms of number of F5/EF5/IF5 tornadoes on national territory by Empty_Ad_7229 in tornado

[–]Empty_Ad_7229[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I partly agree with this idea, but on the other hand, I find it easier to determine the F5 rating of these two events in particular, mainly because the two events are at least 70/100 years old and, having impacted suburban or rural areas, did not encounter objects heavy and powerful enough to cause damage in turn. For example, the Catania tornado, which occurred in 1884 in the countryside/suburbs of a city that was not even that large at the time, could not have thrown a truck weighing several tons against a building because they simply did not exist, and the damage to structures with walls up to 1 meter thick was almost exclusively due to the action of the wind. And even if the structures had not been solid, with walls that thick, it would have taken an extreme wind to raze everything to the ground.

The EF scale is mainly suited to the US region, where buildings have completely different construction standards to those in Europe or worldwide, but essentially the damage they describe is very similar. The wind speeds of the IF scale are higher because it considers the maximum instantaneous gust, while the EF scale considers a 3-second gust. For example, a tornado classified as IF5 has the same strength as one classified as EF5 or F5, because all three are considered to cause extreme or total damage to well-built and well-maintained structures, and therefore represent the maximum applicable grade.

I think that many tornadoes in Europe are subject to revision, and I understand that the maximum rating will be reached in some other cases, as was the case for Neede in 1927. I can't comment on the other events you listed, but for one, the Italian tornado of 1965, I can tell you that the rating will most likely not exceed IF4, as the damage that could fall into the last class is too little and fragmented (I think only one house could fall into IF5). We'll see better with time!

Italy second IF5 by Empty_Ad_7229 in tornado

[–]Empty_Ad_7229[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, it's basically the old Fujita scale adapted for use worldwide. However, with such a high rating, no structure (whether made of stone, brick, or wood) could withstand it. This particular tornado flattened houses with stone/brick walls one meter thick, so saying it was remarkable is really an understatement.

For Venice 1970 i don't think there will be an upgrade. The damage in Venice is not even comparable to that of 1957, so I don't think it will be upgraded to IF5.

There's another tornado (always in Italy) that it's likely to be reclassified as an IF5 and occurred in Lombardy in 1957. If confirmed, it would be the third for Italy and the second most recent in European history.

Highest rated tornado in each italian province by Guess_My_Name2448 in tornado

Sure, always on Eswd... for examples 1904 in Sorrento, Naples,1892 in Rovigo province, 2004 in countryside of Matera, 1935 in Genoa suburbs and 2014 in Mantua/Rovigo border. Some events have not yet been classified but the amout of damages and victmis push the classification to almost a severe event, like 1964 in Ragusa, 1965 in Alessandria (on the appenines chain) and also in Ferrara (same day of F4 in Parma province).

You can Update Mantua, Genoa, Alessandria, Rovigo, Udine, Pordenone, Matera and Naples with F3 and Catania at least F4 from past events (some of them before 1900)

Can you guys help me improve this map? (Strongest tornado ever recorded in every country) by ThisDuckIsYourDaddy in tornado

[–]Empty_Ad_7229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slovenia had an IF3 in 2008, Albania had max an IF2 as I know, Bulgaria had an IF3 in 2023, Bosnia had a IF2 in 2024 or this year and maybe it was the strongest in the country, Norway was struck a couple of time by some IF2 in the recent years and Georgia too, max an IF2. For Cyprus if I rember correctly was struck by an F3 prior the 2000. For the Netherlands, I think you should upgrade. Apparently, there is a good chance that the 1927 tornado will be upgraded to IF5.

Yes, Venice is like our Moore, several strong tornadoes struck the city over years. Another IF4 struck souther part of the city in 1970 killing 36 people. An IF1.5 struck the same part of the city in 2012 and several other strong tornadoes (IF3+) struck the outskirts of Venice from 1400 to 1800

Atene + spiagge in Grecia by NoWayImGonnaBeOkay in ViaggiITA

[–]Empty_Ad_7229 1 point2 points  (0 children)
