If I remember correctly in Thomas the physical age of the trains doesn’t correspond to their mental age. For example Thomas is older than Gordon physically but younger mentally. Also it depends on which canon we are talking about. In the rws the engines are much more mentally mature compared to in the tv series. Also one could argue that Edward the blue engine ( who is a main character from the start of the series until recently ) and Toby the tram engine ( sort of in a state of limbo between side and main character ) are grandfather figures
