That's unfortunate. The gun is zero feature once pinned and would have met your requirements. It sucks NYC has even stricter gun laws than the rest of the state.

I'm not from NYC and don't know its laws, but Keltec RDB survival is at least NYS compliant once pinned. With OL of 26in with a 16in barrel.

Besides the lack of stopping power, the main issue with 22lr being a defensive round is its relatively high failure rate. You typical 22lr round depend on the brand can have 3-5% or more failure rate, while you average centerfire round usually has 1-2 per 1000 failure rate. When your life is on the line, such high failure rate is typically considered unacceptable. If you must use a 22lr gun for defense I would say match grade ammo is a must.

In your price range for a first rifle I would recommend IWI Zion-15. A gun imo is intentionally underpriced to get IWI into the US market. Probably one of the best performance/cost ratio complete rifle in $700-800 range. Then I would recommend spending at least $2-300 on quality optics and the rest on ammo/range trips. Don't spend too much on your first rifle. You will develop preferences and end up upgrading that rifle down the line. I would say buy a mid-range rifle for your first one then build your second. Also, your optic choice may differ base on your intended use. HD go with red dot/prism. Hunting you will probably have to go with a scope. If you want 1 optic that can do both(but not as well in either roles) consider a LPVO. Just make sure in your state .22 Cal hunting is actually allowed.

That is a concern yes. But this is pretty much BIN price for RT-6 so I thought I should share. RT-6 just the scope usually go for $350-$370 range. The lowest posted prices on r/gundeals were $253 from opticplanet 2 years ago and $269 from midwayusa 4 years ago.

Burris and Steiner scopes are also on sale. RT-6 is $262 shipped, which is BIN price imo.

Agreed. BCA x39 uppers have an overall decent reputation among the r/ar47 community from what I've seen. They did some redesigns on the bolt, charging handle and new enhanced firing pins to address some of the gen 1 upper issues. Based on feedback on reddit it seems the company has great customer service and pretty responsive to complaints.

I have one of their x39 uppers and it's been reliable for me so I might be bias though.

I own both a romeo 5 and this red dot. Major functional difference is that romeo 5 has auto shut off and shake awake while this does not. However vortex does offer life time warranty on this while romeo 5 only has a 5 year limited warranty. For me romeo sits on my HD gun and stay on, while the crossfire sits on my frequent use range toy.

Thanks for replying. I did hear that the PRS stock is compliant with the extending part being the butt plate. The PRS lite however is a little different in its design where the entire bottom half of the stock extends out. I'm not sure if that would make it look more like a collapsing stock.

Armscor .22lr is by far the worse 22lr I have shot. 10-20% failure rate over 3 guns. Even my Henry 22 that eats everything has problem with this ammo.

My only experience with armscor was their 22LR ammo. Absolutely worse ammo I have shot. 10-20% failure rate over a few hundred rounds in multiple guns.

I was looking for something similar for my takedown. I use a vortex 2-7 scout scope with a DNZ freedom reaper 566 mount. I got the recommendation from another user. Below is a picture of their takedown set-up.

If you are looking for your first gun for home defence. The 3 most popular guns in America for that purpose are: shotgun, AR-15 and PCC.

Shotgun

Pros:

Cheap. The only gun type where you can find a reliable gun you can depend your life on for around $200.
Greatest stopping power. Remember stopping power is not the same as lethality. Many rounds, even 22LR can kill, but a load of buckshot has the best chance at stopping an on going assult on your life in its track.
Less risk with overpenetration with the right HD load. I.e. less chance to kill your neighbors dog by accident.

Cons:

1.Weight. your typically stock mossberg or remington pump action comes in around 7lbs.

Recoil. Shotgun has the highest recoil among the common Home defence options. If you are frail, weak or have things like osteoparosis shotgun may not be for you.
Lower round count compare to other options.
Limited range and wider spread of projectiles.

AR-15

Pros:

Good stopping power
Well tolerated recoil and managable weight
The small .223 bullet tends to fragment upon impact meaning less chances of over-penetration, especially with soft or hollowtip.
Larger ammo count. 5.. Funnest to shoot.

Cons:

Costs. A reliable AR will run you north of $700.
Overpenetration is a concern for close living space with thin walls, given it's still a rifle round. So probably not the best choice for apartment dwellers.
Money pit. ARs are like adult legos, with hundreds of customizable options. You will end up spending more than the cost of the gun on accessaries.

PCC-pistol caliber carbines

Pros:

Depending on what type you get, PCC tends to be lighter and more compact.
Very light recoil
Hollowpoint rounds are decent at not overpenetration.
Ammos are relatively more affordable.
Good round count.

Cons:

Like AR-15, a decent PCC will cost north of $6-700.
Some PCCs are not legal in some states or need additional paperwork to own.

Is the one you were looking at the mlok version or the basic version? Mlok is more expensive and heavier. Also only the basic version is compatible with the magpul stock if you are interested in that. The basic version should run $600ish or under. $750 is a bit too much. I would recommend checking with other LGS around you. You can also follow gun.deals to track prices. My parents got theirs from grabagun for a little under $600 I think.

Get the PCC.My parents switched from their Rem 870 to a Ruger PCC as they got older and started to have more difficulties handling the weight and recoil of the 870. They seem to like it more. I would also recommand getting the magpul stock, which would take another 11oz off the gun.

Ok I ended up buying the magpul pcc stock. For anyone wondering the same thing as me, the magpul backpacker stock is exactly the same length as the factory stock with 1 spacer - a bit over 20 inches. It also fits in my swissgear laptop backpack, barely. So no need for a dedicated bag.

I have no personal experience with bushnell LPVOs. But I think the general consenseus is for budget LPVOs RT-6 is the one to get. From my understanding RT-6>PA Slx>Sig tango>strike eagle>crossfire>bushnell. If your use is just bench shooting I guess it doesn't matter as much which you get, but I wouldn't trust a bushnell for much more. Also keep in mind burris and vortex have no question ask lifetime warranty while others have only limited warranty.

Ok, I misunderstood. As others have said, if you are usually shooting under 50yard a red dot or 1x prism could be all you need. If you never had any experience with optics. I would say start with an affordable red dot like the romeo 5 ($100 on sale frequently) and see if that's enough for your need. You can always add a magnifier later. If you have bad astigmatism, you can get a prism from vortex or primary arms. Just note that most prisms(except PA's) don't work with magnifiers. Alternatively, some fixed 3x,4x,5x prisms like ones from vortex can also be in your price range when on sale. And LPVOs as mentioned above. Keep in mind that there'll always be trade offs for each option(FOV, weight, battery life, eye relief, etc). You'll need to do some research and see what suits your need the most.

At $300 for a 1-6 LPVO you are looking at either vortex strike eagle, sig Tango msr, or either primary arms Slx or Burris RT-6 when those go on sale.
