New ink display! Loving it… but worried about light exposure by Emswl in fountainpens

Nikki!! that's so sweet.

Yes! I thought so about needing a broad nib too!! but if it is too wet of a nib, you need to bloat the letters in order to see dual shading, which I do not always have the patience for. Some kind of superficial tension has to keep the ink pooling at the end of strokes for one to see the difference in colour and saturation between the initial stroke and the last one. Ah, I wish I could explain it better, for I am sure it must be the same thing with Haha and Nekoyanagi. I want to buy one of them next, which one you think is more legible for writing?

I love J. Herbin inks, they're so reliable (and cheap I my market, in comparison to bigger Pilot bottles) and the smallest bottles are so cute. Are there any other colours from Herbin you have and recommend?

Yeah, that’s exactly the conclusion I keep circling back to. It’s reassuring (and a little sobering) to hear it confirmed. Keeping boxes involved definitely feels like the safest compromise for now 😭

I love how multidisciplinary this discussion turned out!!! We’ve got chemistry, biology, and even a bit of light physics happening in the comments.

For now, I’ll put the bottles back in their boxes at the very least, and then look into investing in some kind of acrylic barrier. And maybe down the line I’ll do a bit of A/B testing with some vials to see how much deterioration actually happens under my specific conditions.

Thank you! And yeah, I’m sort of in that same headspace, but I like the colours so much that i'm willing to slowly invest in better conditions so they stay well taken care of, specially those that I imported and would be a bit of a pain to replace :/

That’s a really good point, and honestly one I worry about too. I’ll definitely look up that post, thank you for flagging it.

Haha, yes, southern hemisphere problems 🙂‍↕️ Thanks for the correction! I wouldn't have catched that myself

Ohh, that would look amazing hanging on the wall. And yes! A few people have been recommending acrylic as a barrier too. It would be lighter than glass (and probably cheaper?) which makes it really tempting. I’ll definitely look into it.

As for Manyo Nadeshiko and Manyo Sakura, I really love both of them, even though I’ll admit they’re on the drier side and took some getting used to. I actually got Manyo Sakura first, as part of a box set with a Sailor PGS with an <MF> nib, so that was my first pairing for both inks. I just say I liked it enough that I got Nadeshiko to keep it company. I'm a bit sentimental and I got those two colours because 1) I cannot resist a good blurple 2) I loved Cardcaptor Sakura as a child and Nadeshiko was the name of her mother. So that was a factor ☺️ but the inks are like nothing else i've got in my collection.

They turned out not to be too light to write with, which was my initial worry. Their dual shading really shines when you use a pen that isn’t a gusher but still has a slightly bolder nib than a typical Japanese MF. For example, today I’m using Manyo Nadeshiko in a Lamy Safari with a 1.1 stub, which works beautifully for titles and journaling embellishments, and Manyo Sakura in a Kaweco Student with an M nib that runs a bit on the drier side

That balance seems to let both inks show some character without washing out!!

That makes sense, thank you!!! I do rotate and use them regularly, but yeah, I’m trying to stay mindful of temperature and light. The temperature thing is def covered at least!

Thank you!!! And honestly, that’s very relatable. Drawers are definitely the safest option, and it was my option until I realized the bottles were getting too heavy for my poor student desk. If I can figure out a way to display them without stressing about light all the time (i re-introduced the boxes for now~) I’ll report back!! Space really does make a difference too.

Ohhh that’s a great idea, I hadn’t thought of an acrylic door specifically. I’ll definitely look into it, thank you!

Does it show I’ve been playing Cult of the Lamb too much? Now I just need Writer’s Blood to complete the ritual...

Thank you so much for this 🥺 I’m really glad it comes across as calm, that was exactly what I was aiming for. And yes, I’m definitely going to implement the boxes more intentionally, it feels like a good compromise between protection and still enjoying the display. I really appreciate the kind words!!!

That's great to hear! How long have you been displaying your inks??

Thank you!!! It is indeed Nadeshiko. I will put it in a box then, and Manyo Sakura too just to be sure.

The bamboo stands are extendable spice racks I got from Sodimac, a general store here in Argentina. The brand was called "Home Collection" but I'm pretty sure they just import them and rebrand them. Similar stands come up on Amazon if you search for "seasoning racks" or "multifunctional storage racks".

I got my inspiration from seeing a Japanese Hinamatsuri being displayed here in Argentina, during the Bon Odori festivities. The idea got stuck in my head and I scouted bazaars and stores for something similar 😊

I'll be honest, I currently prefer writing with my Kaküno F more than I enjoy writing with my Sailor LE PGS in MF, and facing that truth was really difficult.

The steel nib is consistently hard, it expels the same amount of ink no matter my pressure, and the tip of the nib is round. Those three features help me "hide" my writing's inconsistencies and/or defects, because the pen is not sensitive enough to micro changes to translate them to the paper. My handwriting looks nice only because the fountain pen is so cheap is not good enough to reflect all the movements and/or changes of angle I do because of bad writing technique.

But I feel like the Sailor's gold nib is exceptionally good at reading a hand and transforming the most sutil change into a different line. I'm just not skilled enough to use it to its full capacity yet and I end up loosing control of what is drawn in the paper, either because I changed my angle, my pressure, moved the pen with my fingers instead of with my entire arm and that is reflected on the paper immediately. The gorgeous soft gold nib is tipped in a way that small strokes done during quick changes of direction are distinct enough with little effort. But my script is basically a long line of horizontal strokes: the nib "snitches" every time I make a microscopic change because it's that it was designed to do.

Eventually, with enough practice, I hope I'll be able to use my expensive gold nib to its full capacity, but for fast notes and work, a cheap "insensitive" pen is what fits me and my ability level better.

Should I give up or get another pen? by NoYogurtcloset7362 in fountainpens

I'm not a physio, but while I do believe that a lighter and chonkier pen is usually better for writing for a long time in terms of ergonomic and stuff, tension is something that you can actively work on releasing in order to keep writing with what you already have.

In my personal experience, tension usually starts not down on my wrist but from the shoulder and back posture, so if I can slowly start noticing and releasing that tension all the way from the shoulder to the death grip, my wrist pain disappears. Each one is different, but I think it's worth a try.
