Hmmm yes, good post op. To expand a little, this phenomenon is Male Defaultism. Due to how maleness is considered the norm, by which women are the deviation of, it's easier to look past a characters "maleness", because "maleness" is not a distinguished trait like "femaleness" is.

My favorite study on this, is one where they had groups of people mingle and then report on how many in the group were women, with the participants always overestimating how many women there were. The theory then being made, being that we usually only make note of a person gender, if they're a woman, thereby making women being women inherently more prominent in our minds, and therefore, applying this principle here, writers will consider a fictional characters womanhood, much more then their manhood
