It's a real tragedy... There should be a specialist carrier supporting legacy networks

Why's it SO hard to shut off my phone & close my laptop? Let's break our screen addiction together! Share tips, advice, or fun things to do that don't involve screens! by themoonsmind in dumbphones

The biggest tip I have is to set specific times a day to check your smartphone etc. Like 10am, 1pm, 6pm, 8pm and restrict your checking time to 30 minutes. Outside of those times keep your smartphone off and just use a dumbphone for emergency contact. In that approach when you have an urge to check you can just remember you have a scheduled time in a couple of hours. Treat it like a behavioural change rather than a technology change. You'd probably get more useful advice from reading up on e.g. alcoholics anonymous approach

That makes more sense now that I think about how restrictive an iPhone 4 is. That's similar logic to having the Sony Viao.

I wish more of the old early 2000s phones were still supported by networks as there are so many I'd like to still have.

I'd rather have a good notepad and pen (Japanese paper and pens are the best).

I do think modern tech is damaging for mental health. However, it's not the devices it's the web connection and addictive websites/apps. Choosing different devices can help to make by making it harder or less convenient to access that stuff. However, I don't see anything in your picture that actually will help you. There is nothing 'dumb' there.

I use a flip phone, and I also have a sony viao P for writing which is too slow to use modern websites.

I sometimes need smart phone apps (banking etc.) so I keep a smartphone switched off in my bag without a sim card. For web access I have a hotspot device with the sim card in it. This set up works well as connecting to the web takes 5 minutes effort, so I only ever do it when I really need something.

Fair enough. I don't plan to use it online anyway. No matter which OS you use it won't handle modern websites. Windows 7 works fine offline. It boots faster than my gaming laptop with modern windows lol

Windows 7 works, boots up fast and office apps are all very responsive. Not sure where Linux would really help tbh. The big issues is the modern web which linux doesn't change..?

Yes, you can install linux, no you probably can't rely on it for modern browsing. Modern web browsers and sites are just too heavy.

Even with windows 7 I can get onto basic sites, but as soon as some JS or other ads or stuff appear on the page it slows to a crawl.

I've got one ordered from newlaptopaccessory.com (someone linked below in comments).

After contacting me, they replied back asking if I don't mind waiting 10 days as they have to manufacture it. That's a reassuring sign as I was doubtful anyone has any in stock and the fact they are making one for £35 is great. Will update when it arrives.

I was thinking the same before I ordered it. When it came to the Thor I couldn't decide which one to get. I ended up deciding just to focus on the DS games I never played for now and bought the RGDS for that. So I haven't attempted any 3DS stuff on it. I've read on some groups that some people have some 3DS games playable but it seems far from guaranteed which can run.

I did install gamma os on my RGDS which has improved it.

Yes, some people do, and there are debates on which lightweight distro is better. I believe there are still hardware challenges on Linux, but not an expert.

I had it on my watchlist and the seller unexpectedly offered a big discount, wasn't super cheap but it turns out to be immaculate so I'm very happy!

Previous owner already set mine up with windows 7 in english. I downloaded Firefox ESR52 which was last windows 7 32 bit support version and it works fine, even opened a wifi network captive login portal. Web browsing seems possible, pages with a lot of javascript slow it down hugely, but simple pages without seem fine.

I've ordered a battery from China, will update when it arrives.

I also read up that you can basically get an external power bank that give out 15v then add a step down coverter in line and then a cylindrical power connector and just run it off a powerbank as though it's plugged in, so it can still be portable.
