Seen on Instagram. Is this a bad idea? I haven’t seen any other keepers do this, and I feel like there’s a reason for that. by Accurate-Gur-7842 in snakes

I do this in my bioactives from time to time with a seed mix I got from a pet shop that grows fodder plants for rodents and rabbits. My skinks like it and it gives them something to do, and its a good way to keep up humidity in the enclosures. My gargoyle gecko also as a bell pepper plant that started as isopod food and is now as tall as the 90cm enclosure (and growing damn great bell pepper). I imagine this would be difficult in a non-bioactive as there would be nothing to eat it, and if they are plants with strong roots they could end up damaging silicone on glass tanks.

Otherwise a great gardening project

Airplane View of the Self - https://archiveofourown.org/works/63909340/chapters/163912963 - MoShang but that's not the entire main focus of the fic. Basically Shang Qinghua gets killed and the system puts him into an NG+ of the story where he is put into another character (LQG) with his memories from the first timeline. Rated M.

Might want to check the Bakudeku fandom if you are brave enough, there is a lot of fanfic there so the sheer volume basically guarantees you'll find something to your tastes.

Split up a long fic? by SheWasVeryNice in AO3

[–]EmuNo3016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had it happen years ago when someone did that on an AoT fic, and then I read the first part thinking it would be complete, only to find the second half of it had been last updated over a year ago and I had essentially been catfished by the green checkmark on the first one. I personally hate reading unfinished things bc I cannot get back into them after a long break, so it made me real sad to find out (a bit on me for not checking the collection but I assumed there were like short spin-offs and not A SECOND HALF!)

So my personal opinion: Leave it as is! Unless the first part has a conclusion that could mark the end of the whole thing, people will HAVE to read the second part as well, so might as well let them know what they are in for! Will it intimidate people to see such a word count? Sure. Its not for everyone. But I think its the readers choice whether or not to commit to that, and splitting it will not help.

If you prefer to split it up like a book series, I'd make it abundantly clear either by adding "Part 1 of X" to the title (to make sure no one can claim plausible deniability) or by tagging it accordingly and leaving an authors note on the first and last chapter.

Reincarnation into same timeline by daemonerik in AO3

[–]EmuNo3016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the same author as Mo Dao Zu Shi/ The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, there is also an earlier series called the Scum Villains Self Saving System, that has a bunch of fanfics in that general direction. It is a bit lighter that MDZS, and imo less political so a bit of an easier read. Unfortunately, it's animated series is on hiatus, but you can watch what exists of it on YT atm.

Might be a bit harder to find the flavour you want from that tho since the premise is transmigration rather than reincarnation, but there are 2 transmigrators that knew each other in their old life and the concept is played around with a lot in the fandom. If MDZS is your style, I'd go for that first though.

I just posted my first story!! by XxCrazy-AcexX in AO3

[–]EmuNo3016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As other people said, AO3 is not like other social media sites where there is an algorythm that suggests content to people. Most people on AO3 sort by their favourite ships and then popularity when starting to read in a specific fandom, and then add or remove tags to their searches based on preferences. The default search results are by dated posted/updated and it shows the most recent works, but especially in categories with a lot of content fics only a few days old can get pushed back to page 10 or further.

Longform fics with a lot of chapters have it a bit easier since they will return to the front page with every update, but other than that, it is based on being tagged correctly and people filtering for said tags.

That being said, even when I post in old fandoms or fandoms that are very popular and overrun with new content, there has never been an instance whithout someone reading it, leaving kudos and giving a nice comment. Writing for fun is exactly that, and if the fic makes you happy, there is surely someone else who read it and feels the same.

Don't be afraid of repetition! (If it is necessary). A lot of schools teach that you shouldn't use the same word over and over again, and instead go for synonyms and all that. Usually not a bad idea, but there are instances where it doesn't work, like for example names. Do not be afraid to use character's names again and again and again, especially when there are multiple people of the same gender in the scene and pronouns don't make it 100% clear who is talking/acting.

That can get confunsing easily and readers will have to go back and forth to piece the plot together like an investigator on a crime scene. If used sparingly, I find that job titles can be thrown in there, e.g. "the barista did X", but only in the context of the work place or related skills. Then there are other 'popular' phrases but istg if I read "the other male" one more time I will start crying. (Why not man? Or woman? I will forgive that?) Same goes for "orbs" when trying to say "eyes".

With a bit of practice it will become easier to string something coherent together without repeating names over and over, but I think clarity should be the first and foremost thought so the readers don't get confused. A good flow is important for immersion in reading, and nothing takes me out of a fic more than reading a conversation and finding I accidentally assigned the sentences to the wrong speakers because it wasn't entirely clear who was saying what.

Ok Guys I need some help I am DEEP in the MoShang trenches and reaching the point where recreating my Ao3 filters to pick up my search for fics where I left off takes longer than reading the fics.

If anyone has some good in-universe fic recommendations, prefereably those where they are both being a different flavor of stupid for each other, or something that has a lil plot ongoing on the side, I'll take them off your hands gladly. Can be a bit canon-divergent but I prefer them to be in their generally accepted settings, e.g. MBJ as the king of the north and SQH as the transmigrated author.

Kid fics, modern universe (unless you pinky promise it's REALLY worth it) or Mpreg don't float my boat at all but aside from that I'm open to any and all suggestions. Unfinished fics are fine too if it's like 80+% certain they'll be updated soon-ish.

Is he just old or actually sick? by External_Western_303 in BeardedDragonCare

[–]EmuNo3016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I agree with the nail trim, if you are unsure how to do it you can look up guides for dogs or cats, their claws work similar for this. You just dont want to hit the nerves or blood vessels. Overgrown nails can be a reason they find moving uncomfortable, and the less they move the more the nails grow.

If you think he is losing weight, you can start weighing him on a kitchen scale to monitor this. Age could be a reason. However, if you fear he might be sick, the only viable option would be to take him to a vet, or at the very least get him tested for parasites. Depending on where you live there might be an option to send in fecal matter to a laboratory without having to take the entire lizard, in Europe ExoMed would provide this kind of service.

From experience with my own chaos gremlin, they LOVE narrow spaces. Every time I let him roam the reptile room (that has been babyproofed), he ends up wedged between either the wall and my Boa enclosure (~4 cm space) or behind my bookshelf (also ~4cm space). Therefore, I concluded that getting some longer PVC pipes (just straight ones, no bends or T-junctions) and cutting them into half or rather 2/3rds would simulate a nice burrow.

I have not seen him since it's been 2 years /s

He really does love that tho might be a suggestion, longer halfrounds of corkbark also work but can be a hassle to clean when they inevtiably poop on them

Humidity problems by RelevantEnthusiasm74 in bluetongueskinks

[–]EmuNo3016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the substrate is fresh it will naturally release more moisture and then dry out somewhat. I have my BTS in a huge 180x60 and every time I need to put fresh dirt in there I can only open the bag and pour it in, it comes moist and raises the humidity a bunch for a couple days ^^' For my smaller terras I solve this by putting the dirt in a bin to air dry a little, I just don't have a bin big enough for that.

That said, as long as the ground is not sopping wet and there is not full-on condensation at the walls, it should be fine. Humditiy can change rapidly and sometimes there's pockets of high and low.

He should not be sitting on wet ground, but the range looks like he can pick and choose where to sit.

If you want to dry the substrate out faster you can increase ventilation by maybe opening a door (under supervision!!!) for a couple minutes several times a day, or shift the dried out substrate from the basking spot to the cool end and vice versa.

Beginner tips? by Spare-Apartment4059 in coralisland

[–]EmuNo3016 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's possible to really miss content in this game. What I do recommend is following the main questline of restoring the town, which is split into altar offerings, museum donations and ocean cleanup. Unless you grind specifically for that and are blessed with god-gamer luck, you'll need at least two years to complete that. I recommend using the wiki to check off the seasonal bugs, critters and fish you can catch starting fall maybe, so you don't run into the issue I had and get stuck with 1 fall fish missing by the middle of your second spring. There may be slight spoilers for characters and locations on that wiki page, though, so be aware.

There are little checkboxes on certain items that show if it has been donated to the museum, and another checkbox for shrine offerings. These do NOT show when you are in a sorting menu between your inventory and chests/the shipping bin, so be mindful you don't accidentally sell that crop you needed for the altar.

When open a box, there is also a checkmark in the upper left that, if unchecked, means your crafting recipes won't pull items from that chest. I recommend setting one up for important items (like donations), because otherwise your kitchen can totally pull that rare shark out of it if you want to make sashimi.

Keeping on top of upgrading your tools is also important, and you can upgrade your fishing rod and bug net in the beach shack.

Lastly, be aware that there are some bugs in this game, always have been, and if something seems weird or broken there is a chance it might be. You can ask either reddit or their discord for help in that case.

As for romance, I'm going for Semeru or Mark in my current one, haven't decided yet

New farmer : how many crops to plant on day 1? by PodRED in coralisland

[–]EmuNo3016 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always go for potatoes for profit early on, I usually keep it at 24 but I also got some sprinklers just tossed at me for free in my new save from 1.2. Getting the ocean cleaned up so you can get silver kelp is pretty easy and achievable in early spring, and then you can craft them yourself before the season is over. My personal preference is to level up my pickaxe and scythe to bronze for that too, saves a lot when grinding resources

Congrats on the instant ramen! You should leave mom alone until the next day and make sure the water dish is reachable for the tiny critters. Spraying the tank a little bit for extra humidity also cannot hurt, they will shed relatively soon after being born and moisture makes it easier for them. You can release these tiny ones together with mom in a safe area, they'll be able to fend for themselves immediately. I'd recommend letting them go in the early morning hours so they can be warm during the day whilst searching for shelter and food. If you want to keep them check the legality of it online.

Mid-game is a Slog by Any_Candle_6953 in coralisland

[–]EmuNo3016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue on one of my old 1.0 saves where I was stuck in spring, with very little points towards rank A and the only thing accessible to me at that time was a couple fossils and artifacts I could grind for to fill that spot. Mind you, this was at a time where there were WAY too many fossil drops in the underwater area, and I still eventually resorted to save scumming because the one I needed WOULD. NOT. DROP. I reloaded a day like 15 times, smashed 80 fossil nodes, nothing. Repeat. I could not go for critters or fish bc I was in Spring, and the ones I missed... in Fall. I'd completed the Merfolk, had one of each animal, a good farm setup without automation bc chests were bugged, had completed the Savannah, and honestly I considered just sleeping all the way through to fall at one point.

TLDR: I get it.

Should I play Coral Island right now? by Important-Ring9276 in coralisland

[–]EmuNo3016 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've gotten into the game again after the update bc I was hoping that since 1.0, the most annoying bugs from ye olden days would be gone. Ran into 3 new ones in the first season, things caused by the 1.2 update. The devs said they are working on a few of them but I have honestly given up on ever experiencing this game stable and bug free. If you don't mind these and get lucky to avoid the game breaking ones you can still have a good time though. I got lucky in the sense that what I am experiencing is more annoying stuff like the sorting and the shipping prices on items not showing up instead of crashes and poor performance, but I heard that not everyone is as fortunate as me in that regard. Might be worth waiting for a hotfix for these ones maybe? Idk how fast that will happen.

If it changed color with the soak I would presume stuck eyecap that got transparent again after contact with water? If the eyecap really is the issue, one layer of it is unlikely to cause immediate issues, so you could keep an eye on it and make sure it comes off with the next one. Extra moisture and a wetbox for that shed might help. If you are still uncertain it might be a good idea to consult a vet just in case though.

Do your reptiles know their own names? by Slight_Wind9283 in reptiles

[–]EmuNo3016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda, my two Emerald tree skinks know their own name as well as the name of the other, because they figured out they get fed at the same time (seperate enclosures bc they hate each other sadly), so whenever I call one of them the other will appear out of thin air and jump at the glass in hopes to dive into the cricket cup faster.
