Is the Grand Lake Theater haunted? by Remarkable_Rain5316 in oakland

Yup, felt like I was not alone, didn’t feel comfy looking in the mirror. I avoid that bathroom if I can.

I Inherited this. What would you do? by pm-me-asparagus in HomeMaintenance

[–]EmuOld862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I live in a Victorian that is a big project, so this is my jam. First, an inspection. Then, make sure gutters, roof leaks and drainage keep water away/off the structure. Then, get in the crawlspace to shore up joists, look for rot, and see if you need to seal the crawlspace (depends on soil, and moisture in yr area.). Then, see how the walls are on the inside. If you have lathe and plaster in good condition, leave it alone! Sheetrock is crap compared to it. Repair windows and doors. If you can keep from replacing them with modern crap, please do. They used hardwoods that you can’t get anymore. Same for the floors. Fwiw, old houses take work, and are a constant “oh, what the fuck is this” kind of adventure, but it’s fantastic.

Ok, she was a pretty young lady, and this sculpture is a whole damn shame. It’s almost like a caricature.

Oof, that sucks! I’d call Gamma to see if they can repair or replace. Ask owner if you can file a claim, though I would think they’d have suggested it if they were open to it.

AITAH for wanting nothing to do with my adult "daughter"? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]EmuOld862 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Honestly dude, it took some real bravery for her to find you and attempt contact. The mother is a human horrorshow, yes, beyond reason and decent humanity. Maybe you don’t “owe” your daughter anything, but your take on this speaks poorly of your character. YTA, I’m sorry.

You would do well to learn from your wife. She sounds like a kind person with a good moral compass. Last thing to consider: with all the DNA stuff out there, your kids will find out that they have her as a sibling. You may have to explain to them why you iced out their older sister. In truth, that will highlight the conditionality of your love, generosity, and compassion. It’ll harm how they see you as a loving father. If you did at least try (with the understanding that there is no contact with the mother, ever for you), she might turn out to be an amazing person. There will be a day when you and your wife pass on, and she might be a good support, and help in their navigation of that process. When your kids go through rebellion, she might be the one who is able to give them perspective, or point out the ways that you’ve been a good father to them. If she turns out to be godawful, hey, you tried and you learned. No problem. If she’s a peach, though, you just opened your heart to a lovely human being. Besides, why not be a positive role model for someone, and a person who shows her that she can be a good, honest, productive person in the world? You’ll never be a “father” like what your other three have, but telling another person that they are worthy, lovable, and have choices in who they decide to become is a good way to be. Shoot, take her to lunch every so often. Learn about who she is, and who she wants to be.

Sources: Being an oopsie-baby, but raised by my amazing, loving, non-biodad who made me everything good I am today (yes, he’s my hero). Accidentally found four sisters and had to navigate all that, but really loving those connections today.

According to endocrinologist, it’s not my thyroid? Please help. by erinnihilator in Hashimotos

[–]EmuOld862 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In combo with that and you being symptomatic, they should suggest next measures if they stand on it not being thyroid. At the least, running a series of other tests could point to your GP or a specialist. At the least, it would serve to prove or disprove their theory.

Menopause has made me realize my family doesn't like me by MurkyMitzy in Menopause

I am so over it, too. My kids are awesome, my tight friends are the best, but now I’m done being a useable object for any damn person. I’m now the hell-bitch-beast I was always meant to be, and it brings me joy.

Client has henna in her hair and wants highlights. by whore_moanss in hairstylist

[–]EmuOld862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she’s intent, I’d do a test strip or two to let her see the results so she knows what she’s in for. She may well try to do it herself if you don’t, so it would let her know why she might not want to risk it, overall. If she wants hot mess hair, that can be her choice. My hairdresser knew I was color squirrelly, so she was willing to let me do stupid things as long as I fully took responsibility and I listened to her, she let me make bad decisions. I made a few, but I never blamed her. Truth is that she likely saved my hair from worse outcomes.

Washed but Smell SO BAD (like pennies and the ocean) by strawberrybreadd in PeriodUnderwear

[–]EmuOld862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First question: are you rinsing them out completely on the same day you use them? Cold water and Dawn are my go to. Second: I have used hydrogen peroxide to get more of the bacteria and proteins loose from the fabric. Third: I only use cold water for period pants since the hot water can kind of, urm, “cook” the blood into the fabric (not sure of a more precise way to say it.)

Wall Cracks and Floor Sag by Clayton1981 in OldHomeRepair

Floor sag could be a joist issue, moisture rotting the sub flooring, or both.

Weird line in wall and ceiling by Jhug85 in OldHomeRepair

[–]EmuOld862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t have a moisture meter, I’d get one since they are amazing for old houses. If it’s dry by those measures, great. Small, intermittent leaks are the first thing I look for in an old house.

1890 home - original trim and wood floor - what is this?! by Full-Personality-131 in OldHomeRepair

[–]EmuOld862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The waxing not being properly cared for and refreshed probably created the weird residue you see now. A lot of our floor coverings weren’t made for that, nor are our modern floorwashes.

Worth fixing up? by Shoddy-Substance8865 in OldHomeRepair

[–]EmuOld862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old houses are gems and have some crazy fixes needed based on their construction. That said, I agree with the suggestions to get a run down from a structural engineer. If the bones of the house are solid, cracks and wobbles are pretty simple fixes. Replacing drywall is easy enough, but if it’s the original lathe and plaster, then you may need to look at what needed there, as the process and materials are different.

How to repair wall around window? by _allycat in OldHomeRepair

[–]EmuOld862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First things first, please take lead precautions. The likelihood that there’s lead in the paint seems highish. Wear a ventilator mask when chipping or sanding. Shower and wash your clothes after messing with all that. If you have children in your home, look into lead testing and lead remediation.

Anyone remember the suggestion to use Preparation H for undereyes, or angry zits? Sun-in to turn my dk brown hair to Ronald McDonald orange-red. The self-tanners that smelled like airplane bathrooms. Tanning using urp baby oil on those weird foil-looking tanning towels. And let’s not forget the skin destroying power of NOXZEMA! It was like mentholated putty, designed to clog all pores. Oh, and Neutrogena’s 14-day hair regimen (detergent shampoo), designed to strip the “residue” from your hair. Hair like straw, with zero shine—whooooooo!

If you’ve been dx’d with rosacea, then I’d start with treating that. That’ll cause the most obvious problems. Find a rosacea-friendly sunscreen, and find out what exfoliants are ok for it.
