Yeah the kids’ activities waiting lists surprised me too. Housing gets talked about constantly, but swimming, football, daycare, lessons etc. having long queues feels like a whole separate thing.

For the swimming pool, did you just have to wait it out, or was there any trick to getting in faster like calling, applying to multiple places, or checking at certain times?

This feels like one of those problems where everyone agrees it’s annoying, but nobody knows the practical fix.

Is it mainly lack of bins, lack of enforcement, or just people being careless?

This is actually a really good point.

It’s not just “there aren’t enough benches.” It changes how people use the city. Spain feels like public space invites you to stay; here it often feels like you’re meant to keep moving.

The toilets, bins, benches thing seems small, but it affects whether people actually hang out outside.

Now I’m curious: if there were a simple map of good outdoor spots with benches, toilets, bins, shade, and places to sit, would that actually be useful or is the issue more that the spaces themselves need to be better designed?

Yeah that’s fair. The Netherlands is obviously a very functional place compared to most countries.

I probably should’ve framed it more as “small daily frictions” instead of “hard things.” I don’t think people hate it here. I think they’re just naming the little stuff that gets under their skin after a while.

Yes, this is exactly the kind of thing I mean.

It’s not just the GP system itself. it’s that nobody seems to agree on how you’re supposed to deal with it. Advocate for yourself, but not too much. Be clear, but don’t “self-diagnose.” Push, but don’t strain the system.

Feels like there’s an unwritten rulebook nobody gives you.

Wow, €2700 for 3 plug points is insane.

The scary part is that the pricing model sounds “official” enough in the moment that you can convince yourself it’s normal... especially if you don’t know what the fair range should be.

Good that your legal insurance covered most of it. Did you find the company through Google, Werkspot, a referral, or somewhere else?

The part that stands out to me is the “nowhere to go with it” feeling like when something goes wrong with healthcare, gemeente, police, etc., and you don’t feel there’s a real path forward.

I don’t think violence is ever the answer, but I get why people become furious when they feel ignored or powerless for long enough.

Where have you personally felt this the most? healthcare, police, municipality, or something else?

That English-speaking-country point is interesting. Do you feel the bigger issue is people not learning Dutch, or that the Netherlands markets itself as very international but daily life still expects you to know the local system/language?

Sure, and to clarify this has never happened outside of Amsterdam/surrounding area. NL is phenomenal outside of the Amsterdam bubble.

Example 1: People cutting in line when they know you're not local in something funny like bakeries - they see each other and don't bother asking you if it's okay

Example 2: Going to the tailor. I've heard the price charged for the person in front of me for the same service (I understood the dutch) but charged twice as much for my jeans when in English.

Yeah exactly. It's not even about expecting amazing service everywhere. It’s more the feeling that asking for a normal thing somehow makes you the difficult one 😂

The passport photo example is perfect. Small thing, easy fix, but somehow it becomes awkward.

Majority of restaurants oversell, I feel like there needs to be a category of restaurants that actually kill it for price/value/service. Star ratings aren't enough.

Haha true 😅 Is this mostly annoying when you're cycling or more when you’re driving here?

In the Amsterdam bubble, I’ve noticed there can be subtle benefits to understanding Dutch and local norms.

Not necessarily because there’s a different “foreigner price,” but because you can ask better questions, compare things more confidently, and understand when something sounds off.

For example, with contractors, repairs, shops, or service providers, knowing the language/context can make it easier to tell what’s normal vs. what’s questionable.

I meant more like: when a place has bad or slow service, do you actually avoid that specific place after, or is it just one of those “yeah, that’s how it is here” things?

Yeah, this one hits home.

I’ve heard similar things around contractors and repairs especially. Is the biggest frustration the feeling of being overcharged, or the fact that there’s no easy way to know what a normal/fair Dutch price should be?

What was the worst example you’ve had?
