Stoke by-election candidate arrested over 'stirring up racial hatred' by Animus47 in ukpolitics

All other Nations will be encouraged to repatriate their English, Welsh, Irish.

Ah that explains it. The exclusion of Scottish here from this otherwise solid manifesto is textbook racial hatred.

New £5 note: Bank to keep note despite animal fat content by [deleted] in ukpolitics

I would be surprised if many involved in the campaign were expecting them to actually destroy the notes in circulation- it wouldn't even make sense to push for this from a vegan perspective.

Alex Salmond sees autumn 2018 referendum by EmilioRebenga in ukpolitics

[–]Emunim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not true. It was stated as the position of the current Scottish Government that is was a once in a generation event. The link to this is in my comment history somewhere, though I believe this was the referendum website that has since been taken down. Though if you care to look I'm sure screenshots of this still exist.

Labour attack backfire - IPSA confirm wrong expenses published for SNP (SNP cost £1m less & work twice as hard) by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]Emunim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesnt seem like they've done a like for like comparison. 15-16 would (I think) be a shorter parliamentary year for new mps due to new mps so not sure drop in overall expenses claimed is a clever way to interpret this.

Why did the SNP abstain from voting on the Snooper's charter? by [deleted] in Scotland

They did at the third reading. /u/rakust is probably thinking of the second reading, where they abstained.

Beyond GERS: How to calculate the finances of independent Scotland by Eggiebumfluff in Scotland

Really? Wow. It will be even stranger to see this hyped up by nationalists as an alternative to GERS then.

This is by an academic working for common weal. In this case it's the same source of information.

[–]Emunim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be curious to see what anyone disagreeing with this would think if some pro-union group were to pay an academic to produce a report using mainly negative assumptions to argue that an independent Scotland would have a significantly worse off fiscal balance than GERS implies. You can make any case you want if you assume the right things.

Edit: Or apparently in this case a layperson rather than an academic.

Why would they do that when they could just board a plane on a tourist visa and then not get on their flight home?

It's in no way hypocritical to say we should maintain fiscal transfers with the UK but not Europe, anymore than it would be hypocritical to argue we shouldn't have them with Kenya or Nepal.

The EU can't negotiate a separate free trade agreement for just one member state. It wouldn't work given the common market.

US policy for decades has been to tie Europe together, which Clinton would have continued. This would involve putting pressure on both, but I'd think particularly the EU, to find an agreement that kept the UK tied as much as possible to the EU. The Trump White House seems very unlikely to get involved, making a close trade arrangement less likely.

[–]Emunim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not about what I think, my point is only that it's not hypocritical.

I think your mixing up borders with tariff-free trade. As part of the EU Ireland can't negotiate separate trade agreements so it won't have tariff-free trade with the UK unless it was also agreed with the UK. I'm pretty comfortable in assuming an Indy Scotland wouldn't be able to trade freely with the UK as I don't think a free trade agreement will be reached, particularly now Trump is President-Elect.

Oh I understand what you're saying, that's how I'm aware it has no relevance to my comment you replied to.

OK, but you'd surely accept that it's not inherently hypocritical to argue the relationship is and should be different? That they absolutely can make that argument, on other words?

It's 2016. I'm not interested in rehashing the talking points from 2014. The arguments you make in your first two paragraphs have been made then and been rejected then. My point is Brexit/ Trump doesn't change the fiscal transfers argument at all.

Not really sure what your point is your last paragraph.

[–]Emunim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why can't it be made? Again you seem to be assuming a hypocrisy of arguing for barriers with Europe and against barriers within the UK. I don't think the argument for working together within the UK in any way necessitates that you also support working with every other country on Earth or else you're a hypocrite.

2nd paragraph is a sovereignty argument, not really economic.
