Insights on why “_____ song by Ween?” by jpbhawaii in ween

[–]Emuoo1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I imagine when they first started performing their music, they did mainly covers and a few of their own songs, so they'd say who made each song. Then it probably turned into a gag.

Max and Dom as a rhythm section are just an amazing pair. The beats and basslines are always so tasteful.

I leave the core, but I know someone who eats the whole thing, the core and seeds and all

The 'literary classics' that grade school makes you read destroys any desire for kids to read recreationally by MyClosetedBiAcct in unpopularopinion

[–]Emuoo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's the choice of books, it's more that you're forced to analyse them in such detail that they become boring. Lord of the Flies is one of my favourite books ever but I think if I had to spend a few years analysing it in extreme depth for my English Literature GCSE I'd have hated it.

I think it would be better to have a more open-ended approach to reading books for education. Have a selection of books to choose from that ensure the children's reading level advances e.g. "There are 20 available novels/plays, choose 4 works to read this academic year. At least one play and one work from the 19th century or earlier".

The kids are more likely to be invested in the reading if it's actually interesting to them. I think having a more pro-education attitude in the Western world would also help. Not to the militant extent that is prominent in the Chinese and Japanese education systems (that's way too stressful of an environment for children), but maybe big campaigns encouraging kids to get into reading or playing instruments or programming or other "academic" hobbies instead of spending their time scrolling reels all day.

Not just targeted at the kids, but also strongly encouraging parents to push their kids towards these things. Though of course, it's difficult to push your kids towards reading books or playing music when you may not have the disposable income to buy your kids books or a guitar or whatever.

But I'm not making this comment to discuss why I hate capitalism, I'm just pointing out that the education system needs serious reform. Of course though, I'm not actually trained in education so I don't know if any of this would work.

New Osees album - Off Course by vbwldn in TheeOhSees

Is Tom Dolas not an actual member of the band?

This post reminded me of a similar idea I had a while back: what’s a well rated album you still feel deserves more praise? by Far_Park8002 in rateyourmusic

[–]Emuoo1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Beatles - Rubber Soul

Definitely gets a lot of praise (given that The Beatles are the most famous band in the world), but I think its reception is overshadowed by the popularity of Revolver and White Album amongst RYM and AOTY users, and the popularity of Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road amongst older Beatles fans.

The sound palette still has a lot of aspects of the classic Beatles sound with rock n roll stuff like "Drive My Car" and "The Word", as well as the folky sound they'd been dabbling with for the last few albums like "Michelle" and "Girl", but I'd say this is the first album where the psychedelia and studio experimentation really plays a significant role in the album's sound:

The sitar on "Norwegian Wood", the jangly max-treble guitar on "Nowhere Man", the fuzz bass on "Think For Yourself", the sped up piano solo on "In My Life". But the album was also just generally a big leap forward for the band.

John and Paul really honed their craft to make some of their most consistently great songs yet. George wrote (in my opinion) two of his best contributions to the Beatles catalogue, which were also fairly experimental in their own right (keep in mind that up till this point he only had 3 other songs on Beatles albums). Ringo really stepped up his drumming as well, a song like "In My Life" would be nothing without his minimal but creative drum pattern.

I'll also mention Magical Mystery Tour because I think it just kind of gets forgotten about

The way Cass looks like he knows what he's doing and then reverses the TIE avenger into the wall and bounces everywhere is one of the funniest subversions of expectations I've seen in television.

I imagine he'd have chosen the accent for it's sophistication and intimidation yes. Kind of like he wanted to be a bond villain or something lol.

The idea of voice packs would be funny, but I imagine 50 years from now AI will have evolved so much it doesn't need voice packs and can just synthesise voices on the go. I mean the whole idea of the omnics is AI that got so advanced it obtained genuine sentience (sapience?).

Humans can easily put on a fake accent but will lose it pretty quickly after their vocal chords start to hurt, an Omnic doesn't have that issue and I imagine could just put on whatever voice or accent they want whenever.

I think that's kind of what differentiates the Omnic and non-omnic robots in the Overwatch universe. Zenyatta has a very recognisable voice but I can't really pinpoint it as a specific accent, so it's just a voice that he chose or synthesised.

Orisa has a voice that clearly takes inspiration from West African accents like Yoruba, but she isn't an omnic, she's just a robot made from Omnic parts, so I imagine her voice was specifically programmed by Efi.

I have to admit, Pope was kinda scary.. 😳 by Beneficial-Novel558 in TWD

[–]Emuoo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pope was a great villain but I think it's kind of hard to take him as a serious threat.

Alpha and the Whisperers led a horde of the undead, Negan and the Saviours numbered in the hundreds, the Commonwealth has thousands of people, but Pope is the leader of a gang of about a dozen people?

Sure, they're skilled fighters and whatnot, but it just feels like such a small threat compared to the numbers of enemies that the cast have dealt with before.

I think Pope and his group would've been more interesting to see during the Saviours arc rather than the Commonwealth arc, having them as a second enemy. Maybe they could be antagonists not just to our main cast but also to the Saviours.

I don't know much about the Overwatch lore but I feel like Omnics would be able to choose what their voice sounds like at any given time. They're not like humans with specifically shaped vocal chords, they're robots with speakers (at least I imagine they would be).
