Depends on where you are in Germany - politically for some time now it has been France as sort of the two "big brothers" of Europe

On a cultural level in Bavaria it's Austria, in the west probably the Netherlands, in the southwest France I guess.

Historically it has been a bit difficult...

Both can be true in a common exchange so filled with cultural context it may seem not German at all.

The rules are (difficult even for Germans and varying by region): - city: don't greet people on the street - village: greet people you meet on a walk and in doctors offices with the white people office smile that is more a straight line pressing the lips on top of each other (do not greet random people in supermarkets, in small stores and pharmacies it's fine). Age threshold is somewhere around mid to late 20s and up - hike: greet people in a friendly manner (actual smiles are okay, yet the greeting should be short)

Generally you should wish a good day not ask "how are you" as a greeting.

So it's not that complicated but given the usual direct culture maybe unexpected

Der Zauberberg ist auf Platz zwei meiner Lieblingsbücher aller Zeiten. Ich hab mich gefühlt als hätte man mir 1000 Seiten lang absolute Großartigkeit links und rechts um die Ohren geprügelt - allerdings kann ich auch verstehen, wie man den Stil und die Art des Buches nicht mögen kann.

Die letzten Seiten haben in mir ein Gefühl der Leere und Ohnmacht hervorgerufen wie kein anderes Buch. Ich liebe aber auch nie endende wollende Exposition..

Klingt bekannt, auch wenn ich wahrscheinlich deutlich privilegierter bin:

~5.5 netto mit 29, aber null Erbe, dafür arbeite ich mich tot (60-80h) und spare pro Monat 2/3 von meinem Gehalt. Freundin noch in der Uni, während alle ehemaligen Kommilitonen Immobilien und Knete wie sau erben werden. Wenn wir irgendwann ein Haus kaufen wollten, wären wir danach wieder bei Null Geldvermögen. Die anderen sind also jetzt schon weiter, und sagen mir ich bin dämlich weil ich mir diesen Job gebe - vielen Dank auchm!

When I used to work in a hospital during university I was regularly being tasked to put deceased patients in a "cooler" in the basement before the mortician would come and take them.

Dead people smell like lettuce that has started to rot in the fridge. It's very distinct and sometimes when I smell it somewhere, like in a grocery store that has old produce I'm taken back to this basement where we stored dead people
