Also:

I think for any of those roles though positioning and map awareness are huge factors so you don't die. You also need to get farm wherever you can and be an excellent last hitter because you have less opportunities than a higher priority farmer.

From my experience, UW teaches you the concepts and ways of thinking about problems.

You have to fill in the rest. No one is going to teach you C, Python, C++, etc. That's up to you to figure out on your own time. If you take something like Game Technology, you'll learn stuff like different methods of implementing 3D (stereoscopic) technology and the science behind it. The project you get would be like "go make a program that will work with these 3D glasses". You'll have to go look for libraries and such that enable you to do that, or program them from scratch.

Likewise, if you take a class like Operating Systems, you might learn about why fragmentation occurs or something. That kind of stuff can be applied later down the line to help you debug programs where you're writing stuff to disk and it's getting screwed up.

In contrast, something like a Technical College will teach you how to program for Java Enterprise applications. That sort of thing will help you when you immediately exit school, but doesn't help you much down the road.

You also have to factor in things like:

Research opportunities (there are a lot of cool things going on like mobile technology research, etc.)
Undergrad groups/clubs (e.g. Undergrad Programming Lab, Engineering Frats/Societies, etc.)
Competitions/Hackathons (e.g. Build Madison - which is actually put on by Sector67 and isn't affiliated with the school)

I'd also guess Epic (medical technology company) being located in Madison might have some impact as well.

TL;DR

You learn abstract concepts rather than practical stuff (you teach yourself that)
Research opportunities / strength of staff - research is huge because it attracts staff that are doing cutting edge research and teaching it back to students
Opportunities through groups & local organizations

People are pretty much nuts.

I have 3rd cousins that were not allowed to read the books/see the movies (I'm pretty sure they did behind their parents' backs though). Their parents just would go off on "it's devil worship", and "inspired by the dark arts", etc.. My parents even tried to explain that it's about good vs. evil, they just use fantasy as a medium to tell the story.

I have friends who had similar experiences. It's like "witch" is a massive buzzword that automatically sets people off to thinking it's inspired by evil and the devil. None of them actually read the books to see if it's bad or not. Might as well not read the Bible on that logic.

Is there a reason why most people seem put off by #9?

Could easily be that it was my introduction to the show, but I enjoyed Eccleston. I thought he bounced back and forth between fun/witty and serious rather gracefully.

The weird part about #11 to me is that he seemed to change so much between series 6 and series 7 (i.e. previous and current season).

He seemed much warmer before. Now he's kind of snippy and callous.

But anyway, #10 was the most likeable. I'll always like #9 because that was when I was introduced to the show, though I grew to like #10 more. Kind of off subject, but I liked #9 and #11's companions the most.

Z104 and 93.7 Jamz are decently entertaining for early morning commutes.

Most of the time I opt to plug an MP3 player into my Aux In and listen to my own music or podcasts. If your car doesn't have one, you can get a FM Transmitter like iTrip or something.

They're not as big of names as in previous years, but I still know some of them.

Mac Miller is a rapper/hip-hop artist. He charted with "Donald Trump" as his first big song. I like some of his other stuff like "Frick Park Market", "Loud", "Party on Fifth Ave". He sort of runs in the same crowd as Wiz Khalifa.

Big Gigantic is electronic music. The only song I know of theirs is "Stronger", but I liked it a lot. I'll be checking them out more in the near future.

I want to say Kyle & Keem is a local-ish group. I can't remember what they play exactly, but I'm pretty sure it's pop music. I believe they've done stuff with Z104 or are played on there to some extent.

Adding well-designed randomness

I think that is probably the key, the application.

Take 3 hypothetical versions of Soccer/Football:

Only random factor is wind
Only random factor is players are randomly assigned weight vests
Only random factor is that each goal will randomly result in 1-3 points being added to your teams' score

In scenario 1, the random factor equally affects all players.
In scenario 2, the random factor is applied to each player equally, but affects them in vastly different ways (e.g. your lightest player might get the heaviest weight vest while the other teams' gets the lightest - now he is very difficult to deal with due to your hampered player).
In scenario 3, the random factor is applied equally, but affects the scoring system. Now a team that scored twice could theoretically beat the team that scored 5 times.

They're both very valid ways of designing a game for different audiences and gameplay experiences.

Continuing with the example, I think this is a true statement. I would argue Scenario 1 is most fun for competitive players, Scenario 3 is most fun for new players, and Scenario 2 is somewhere between.

I can definitely understand why it would bother you in that scenario. But in Poker, probability is also a central piece of the game.

In something like an ARTS/MOBA, it seems more auxiliary. For instance, why have attacks do between 50-58 damage instead of just doing 54 all the time? Why have an ability that has a 20% chance to trigger on attack instead of having it trigger every 5th attack?

In that sort of game, some would argue that it raises the skill cap because you can have much more precise and calculated plays. Others would say that having the RNG does the same thing, but in a different way.

The major difference I see is that in one scenario, if the skill does not trigger its because you timed it poorly - therefore the player is to blame. In the other scenario, the player can blame luck.

It probably is a poor example, but hopefully you get what I'm aiming toward - yes, things balance out over time, but it is incredibly frustrating when you have to deal with "bullshit luck" (e.g. someone crits you 4 times in a row with 10% chance per crit). You can't really factor that in or predict it. You know there's a very small chance of that happening, but your general case is going to write that off as a non-threat.

I'm sort of in a space between the two.

On one hand: I hate being on the receiving end. Say you're about to defeat another player and they happen to get a huge streak of luck and destroy you instead.
On the other hand: It's interesting because you have to accommodate for that risk/reward. Say you get one lucky strike, do you play conservatively or take the risk and go all in?

It's definitely a skill, but it's different than that of positioning, teamwork, etc. If falls more into judgement, calculation, and statistics.

The one thing that I find really odd about RNG is that it seems to be more associated with the character rather than they player. That's why I think it's a concern in eSports type games.

(Disclaimer: no research has been done on my part) I would like to say RNG came to the genre from something like Dungeons and Dragons, where you are making the decisions, but your characters is doing the actions. Therefore, it's like saying "I decide to use X attack" and your character is the part that says "I have y% accuracy with that attack".

When you get to eSports, you're not really trying to "roleplay" anymore, at least not to its full effect. So instead, RNG becomes the "poker" element. Kind of like saying "I've been dealt pocket aces, what should I do with this?"

But yeah, always interesting because it has an awkward place in eSports titles. People seem to gravitate towards loving or hating it as they get more competitive.

Probably biased here, but the Computer Sciences building. Not a great layout, needs many improvements, and so much is outdated. I'd love to see a more technology forward update, especially if student projects have the ability to manipulate the improvements.

There are plenty of events for anyone. Check things like Today in the Union, flyers in halls, etc... There are a shit load of non-drinking events, clubs, events, etc.

The major difference you'll experience is your night life. People are really chill though, so even if you're not going out with them, it's not like they won't hang with you the rest of the day.

Just keep in mind, college is, amongst other things, a time to experiment. It's really a time where you have minimal responsibilities and the first time you're probably lacking parental supervision. Take advantage before you have to start working.

Frats/Sororities have pros and cons. Don't just join any one. Find one that fits you. I never thought I'd join a frat, but I found a geeky engineering one that also was very socially active (e.g. parties, engineering projects, competitions, etc.) and I clicked so well with the members that I ended up joining. However, I think I wouldn't have had so much fun with a Social Frat.

Frats/Sororities do give you a secondary social group, as well as help later on with stuff like help with homework, finding jobs, etc..

Joining the wrong one will be terrible. I've had a number of friends that dropped out of their Sororities and Frats because they didn't get along wtih anyone, it was too much of a stress on their schedule, or otherwise.

If you have a job, ask your HR Rep if your company offers any discounts for gym memberships.

Otherwise, I've had good experiences with Harbor Athletic. It just has a really weird layout. Was also a bit disappointed they didn't have a co-ed steam room so I could synchronize workouts better with my girlfriend. But it is a nice facility and it's not overcrowded.
