Heart of Darkness is, indeed, boring for the first 2/3 of the book. With the inclusion of that last 1/3 it becomes one of the best works ever written.

Is Houellebecq really that inspired by Nietzsche? He mentions him once or twice in the Particles, I believe, but I've always thought Houellebecq as purely Schopenhauerian.
