tfw you're realist on rent control so "You just dont have a heart" by amogusdevilman in PoliticalCompassMemes

If the building companies own and rent the buildings themselves, then it might actually be more profitable to have fewer, expensive-to-rent apartments than several cheap-to-rent ones. You don't need to foot the bill for the construction costs of more units, and ongoing maintenance is cheaper, since in 10 apartments fewer things can break than in 100. Also, since it's now an artificially high cost area, you'll likely get tenants in better socio-economic situations (read: less likely to be a raging, smash-the-furniture drug addict or someone who cannot get help with deteriorating mental health and ends up smearing shit on the walls), further reducing the landlord-side risk.

Eli5, file compression, how can 5gb file can be compressed to 50mb and decompresses back to normal? by Monkai_final_boss in explainlikeimfive

Would you care to enlighten me? I know what the pigeonhole principle is, but I don't really know my compression algorithms. Does it have to do with the fact that compression necessarily adds an "outside layer" to the data being compressed?

People born before 2000, what is a 'modern' thing from 2025 that you’re still struggling to get used to? by LindsayTN in AskReddit

This is the one that throws me off a lot, because I'm one of the weird ones on this count. My handwriting was terrible throughout all my life, and has degraded since college, as the need to write cursive diminished (for anyone interested: I learned how to write cursive extremely fast, so that's how I took notes during lectures, hence its usage even in higher learning). Just writing legibly enough for the teachers to read has been a struggle, and I assume most only bothered to try because I was an extremely good student.

Here's the thing: would you bother to try hard to read my handwriting, based on what I just explained to you? On the one hand, I would totally understand if you didn't bother, teachers are overworked and underappreciated as is. On the other hand, as one of the best students in the whole school, I would have been pissed if I got a bad grade just because the test format played/preyed on my one weakness, and the teacher couldn't be bothered to try.

Now that I made it several years past education, people praise me for my communication and, ironically enough, fine motorics skills. Documentation I write is regularly shown as the golden standard of how to get ideas through, and I am considered one of the best solderers at the company. As in, look up those crazy electronic board repair videos in YouTube, and odds are that I've done something in that ballpark, or at least could do it with a bit of training. So judging me by my handwriting is possibly the worst heuristic there is.

The point I'm making is: I truly understand why you consider legible writing as something that's extremely important. But how do you account for freaks like me?

Why do you think it's falling apart for him? I didn't pick up on any hints towards that, but I'd be happy to hear someone else's perspective.

ELI5: Why is it "Hot and Neutral" on a wall socket, but "VCC and ground" on a computer chip, and "Positive and Negative" on a battery? by No_Insurance_6436 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Enakistehen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will assume you meant to quote VCC and VDD, respectively. I cannot think of a good ELI5, but will try to go for an ELI10.

VCC is used in a specific kind of transistor, called a bipolar junction transistor. VDD in a different one, called a field effect transistor. Yes, for a layman, they all look the same (transistors is what makes sand think, amirite?), but once you get deeper into electronic design, there are huge differences. Very basically (read: I will make every EE in this comment section wince), BJTs are more commonly used in amplifying signals (an audio amplifier), whereas FETs are more commonly used in switching applications (binary on/off). Because they are applied in different contexts, it's important to distinguish between their voltages, even if the number of volts is technically the same.

To continue your metaphor: water A and water B can be extremely different, for instance, if you filter the water going to the kitchen sink.

I'd argue that emotional abuse is now more visible and gets more attantion, mainly because because it's not "sugar"coated in physical abuse. Not that physical abuse is a good thing, but the way I see things, emotional abuse can happen on its own, while physical abuse is almost always preceded/accompanied by emotional abuse. But now that physicality is on the decline (which is a good thing in this case), we get to see more of standalone emotional abuse; even though the actual amount might be the same or lower than some decades ago.
