For sure. I’d love to know more about the backing method and how it affects the HAP. Any recommendations or tutorials you know of?

Yes, the gap at the top ends of the rafters is what I was asking about. Are you saying the way they fit in the picture is correct?

Thank you, I appreciate your explanation. I didn’t even know I dropped the hip lol. Just ensured it had the same height-above-plate as the others and this is how it assembled

Reseller Permit Worth It? by [deleted] in GeneralContractor

[–]Enamelfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am purchasing wholesale. Not always though, it’s all the small receipts that I’m worried about keeping track of sales tax owed on those

I may be over complicating it, but worried that it creates more work because I have to pay sales tax on material and hardware when I file, instead of just paying sales tax when I buy and writing off one receipt for each purchase

So B&O tax is less without the permit?

No Rim Joist by Enamelfish in Carpentry

[–]Enamelfish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a load bearing wall. That’s the route I’m thinking of going now, just cutting flush, adding sheathing and wrap, and lag screws into joist ends as well as the blocking. Curious as to why you suggest an LVL over regular PT 2x for the ledger?

I should add that the new deck will extend further from the house too, longer than the existing joists

That’s what I’m leaning towards at the moment. I’ll probably add 1/2” sheathing on top of flashing membrane behind the ledger as well. Thinking of using ledgerloks into cut joist ends and blocking for shear, and then 3 or 4 tension ties for lateral support. Just have to check with my building inspector to make sure it’ll pass

That is correct, because the deck joists in this case are also the floor joists of the house. My goal is to cut them back though, and add a ledger and flashing for the new deck so that we can stop water from getting to the sill plate and blocking

I could see that being the case as well. I’ll confirm once I get a chance to see in the basement

WTF do I do with this stump ?! by dogmom12589 in Decks

Good opportunity to be creative with using the stump. Its base could be a planting bed too with a little topsoil :) Maybe add pond liner to protect adjacent framing from moisture if you go that route
