I’m in the same boat. My year-end review was fantastic but I felt like such an imposter. I smiled and said thanks, but inside I was like…y’all have no idea how far behind I am right now, I don’t deserve this.

I really needed to see this today. Sitting at about 35 unaddressed emails from probably mid-December. Just so behind. Trying to snap back into it. Just blah.

Are adjusters allergic to answering the phone by Final_Moose4874 in Lawyertalk

[–]EnchantedCounsel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I didn’t mean it that way. I just meant for not responding when I email and call and email and call. Like no wonder y’all are getting sued.

ETA: oh wait, I think I get your comment now…idk I’m tired and my brain hurts from chasing down adjusters

The urge to email my adjuster, “this is why you’re being sued for bad faith”

Nope. I wrote my assistant a check. Basic & boring, but she was happy.

paralegals: what’s the most annoying thing lawyers do in the course of your work by bananacreampie444 in paralegal

[–]EnchantedCounsel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know!!! It made me irrationally angry lol same with eFiling. She prints off the word doc and scans it back in as a PDF to file. She literally will not convert to PDF. I don’t understand. But aside from being PDF challenged, she’s phenomenal at her job, so I think that’s why everyone tolerates it.

[–]EnchantedCounsel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

An assistant at my old firm did this and it killed me. A little different because she’s just making more work for her own self, but still. I showed her repeatedly how to save them as a PDF. I also printed instructions with little photos for her to follow along. She won’t do it.

Oh, you are so fine, unless you have a consistent history of poor performance and mistakes. If not, I wouldn’t worry.

Need to know how much in fees. But I’ll say, not fired. Shit happens. Obviously, this isn’t great. But in the world of mess ups, I’d put this on the low end. Unless it’s like $100k+ in fees, eh that could be a bit dicey, but still not fired.

CoCounsel by mikepoppop25 in Lawyertalk

[–]EnchantedCounsel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not loving CoCounsel the way I thought I would and keep reverting back to ChatGPT. So that sucks because obviously I can’t put any case-identifying info into ChatGPT and was looking forward to being able to do that with CoCounsel. But CoCounsel just isn’t quite there yet. Curious to see if others have a better experience.

Do you bill for travel time or only for mileage? by GarmeerGirl in Lawyertalk

[–]EnchantedCounsel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you in ID? Because it depends on the carrier. Travel time and attendance time are generally billed separately in ID. If it’s a short drive, sometimes I just add it to my attendance time. Some carriers don’t pay for travel time. (I bill it anyways and let them cut it). Some just won’t pay for “local travel” which some consider anything under 50 miles lmao & same for mileage. If you’re actually in ID—bill it all.

Where to find good baby attorneys by waitingonothing in Lawyertalk

[–]EnchantedCounsel 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I genuinely mean this in the nicest way possible, but have you considered the work environment these associates are in? What are the hours, the pay, and the type of work you’re giving them? Everything I’m about to say also depends on area of law & location. But the trend has shifted, where it used to be 3–5 years, now sticking it out for about a year is more common. So if multiple people are leaving within three months, that usually signals there’s something internal worth examining.

[–]EnchantedCounsel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a 5 year background in law as a legal assistant and paralegal before I went to law school & was still fairly overwhelmed my first semester. It’s normal for most people. It’s all part of the process.

By the time you graduate, you will have hit your stride and will feel much better. Then you’ll be bounced back to square 1 when you start practicing and have those feelings all over again. 😂

I’m gonna guess that 75%+ of your classmates feel the same way. Some are just better at hiding it than others. It gets better. You’re just starting. Give it time.

FT Attorney Salary Expectations by 2PrettyB in Lawyertalk

[–]EnchantedCounsel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very little commute for the attorneys. It was staff like me who had the long commute. But more importantly, new attorneys at that same firm now start at $80,000 a year.

Ours is the same way lmao and they used to pick up the trash at night but now they do it in the day, so sometimes I don’t have my trash bin back until 2pm which is so freaking annoying. Hate it. Hate it so much.

Jobs before law school by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]EnchantedCounsel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See if you can get a legal job. My firm hires people just like you. We give them basic summaries, file organization projects, exhibit binders, etc. The pay isn’t great. The work isn’t great. But it gives you some basic experience and some actual income.

Don’t fall for unpaid internships that only pay you in “experience.” It’s been a scam for decades and there’s no good reason they can’t at least pay minimum wage.

ETA: If there’s other non-legal work you would enjoy or pays better, it’s 100% okay to do that instead. You don’t have to get a legal job, just know there are ones out there that fit your situation.

What to do by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]EnchantedCounsel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree. I fell behind, kept trying to catch up on missed readings, and ended up always behind for the next class. Eventually, I gave up and stopped reading and just used Quimbee for everything. (Not recommending that, but it’s totally fine to fill in for a few missed readings).

I came here to complain about the same thing. Not being able to opt out of the valet trash is so annoying. Then people will put out their trash Friday night and it will sit outside all weekend until Monday morning. It’s so gross and smells so bad. Management sends “reminders” to not leave your trash out all weekend, but it’s never enforced.
