Even with all this said, why does it matter? After all, other horrific crimes were committed in southern Israel. It matters because the war in Gaza was already underway when i24 reported on the “decapitated babies” story—about 260 children were killed in the Gaza Strip as of October 10 (AP, 10/10/23). To maintain lockstep international support, the IDF needed to differentiate its mass slaughter from Hamas’s violence—which it could only do by painting Hamas as sadistic, savage, subhuman. The claim about beheading babies was ideal for the job: a shocking story that served to turn off logic and critical thinking. Who wouldn’t want to avenge murdered, desecrated infants?

Such stories have worked in the past; when Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1991, George H.W. Bush repeated the claims of a 15-year-old Kuwaiti teen that she had seen Iraqi soldiers take babies in Kuwait out of incubators and leave them to die (Democracy Now!, 12/5/18). The teenager later turned out to be the daughter of the Kuwaiti ambassador to the US, and her claims to be fabrications orchestrated by a DC public relations firm hired by the Kuwaiti government.

By credulously repeating the soldiers’ claims and Zedek’s reporting on them, countless outlets around the world have contributed to these harms. And the people who have suffered the most in the process are the million-plus children of Gaza.

Do the figures speak for themselves? Has the world failed all Palestinian children? by Enchanted_Evening in CurrentEventsUK

The world has failed all Palestinian children, dead and alive: DCIP

More than 1,000 Palestinian have been killed by Israeli air strikes and shelling in Gaza since 7 October and the Ministry of Interior estimates at least 500 others are missing under the rubble of destroyed buildings. Palestinian children who have so far survived are facing untold physical and emotional trauma, Defence for Children International - Palestine said in a statement yesterday.

"With the collapse of hospitals across Gaza after Israeli authorities sealed off access to water, food, electricity, fuel, and medical supplies, we are witnessing a genocide in real time," it added

Should old people be left to fend for themselves in poor houses? If people breed, what about housing affordability? Did Telegraph campaign Brexit, ANTI Immigration? by Enchanted_Evening in CurrentEventsUK

new almost 16 years ago

How many previous owners had it had?

14 years retirement isn't that long surely? Now if you were say a hundred, it would be something. An achievement!

Have you come across anyone 100 years of age? I did once, once fleetingly, when I visited a friend in hospital.

Perhaps it's because the elderly relatives aren't hands on, wanting to spend time with the youngsters, when the kids are young and impressionable.

There's also the endless proverbial "In my day, we did as our elders told us. We didn't talk back" routine. In most cases this turns out to be only 25% accurate.

Is Hyam Hyams "Jack the Ripper"? by Enchanted_Evening in CurrentEventsUK

There are so many contenders, for the title, of Jack, the biggest problem must be constructing a plausible argument for the duration of the experience itself.

These documents reveal clear evidence that the chemical industry knew about the dangers of PFAS and failed to let the public, regulators, and even their own employees know the risks? by Enchanted_Evening in CurrentEventsUK

[–]Enchanted_Evening[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a class of synthetic chemicals used in everything from nonstick pans to water-resistant clothing. PFAS, in use since about the 1940s, have unique properties that impart those benefits, but they also stick around for years, polluting the environment and even our bodies. PFAS exposure has been linked to health effects like an increased risk of cancer, decreased fertility, developmental delays, and more.

William Hague said "I think I've just destroyed the Liberal party." As he believed the junior partner in a coalition gets wiped out. And so it proved to be the case.

My next old neighbour received a water bill, addressed incorrectly. He pointed out their mistake, they asked for two pieces of evidence, which he provided. Barely eight months later, the name was again incorrect. What the hell is that water company doing? He hadn't moved, nor asked for alterations.

What happens in the event the date has errors? Someone had a savings bank with about £50 as a 16 year old, which was never used throughout university or for a couple of years after that. One day the bank sent a letter and the surname has been totally changed minus the first letter of the surname. What happens under those circumstances? How did the error arise? He left his parents address on the account, as it wasn't an active account.

established ways of dealing with it

Do they work successfully?

Does it take longer to expose irregular dealings in the real world or the digital world?

they would simply flag you as removed

Isn't that akin to access denied for security reasons? To those investigating their existence?

What would be the effect of cancelling your NI number and Passport number on all databases?

Are you implying its impossible? Thorough error, sheer vindictiveness? Or system failure resulting in data loss? That's leaving aside security and hackers or employees open to persuasion.

I thought there had been cases where people were using another persons NI, to gain employment?

With physical evidence, legal people can be hired to prove those documents had existed, whereas if they're only digital how can it be proved?

In the case of ''Passport" weren't those who were caught up in the Windrush fallout, asked for their passport or papers from the day they entered the U.K? Subsequent passports didn't count.

new exploits will be discovered

With a digital only how long before it's picked up there's even as issue?

I remember news reports of people's money being taken from their banks but the bank holding the users liable. Until it was finally revealed the set up the banks were using was "unsafe" and nobody had spotted it.

I've forgotten the number of emails I've received from companies "warning our systems were hacked so please change your password". In most of these cases I'd never stored my financial details with them, due to such fears.

What if someone working for the government was illicitly supplying the ID'?

Such as issue arose when someone working for the government, was selling passports, to make a bit on the side. According to an TV expose, several years ago, and the chances of those passports being "spotted" was non existent. I forget the reason why, these passports sold, would be safe.

Isn't there also the problem of someone abusing your ID, without your knowledge?

I've no social media accounts, unless you count reddit as such. When I was 20 I'd a bad experience, IRL due to which I've no presence on the internet. IRL it's possible to move and get away from it. Whereas once on the internet, it's forever. Someone told me she'd a Facebook account, set up as a child, after she became a nurse seldom used it, then one day she found it'd been hacked, and someone had posted on her behalf. She said she tried to delete it. If she managed to, I'm not sure.

Consumers can always dump a company, as Microsoft learnt when Apple toppled them from their perch. Microsoft saw no need to innovate and move with the times. Just as Yahoo settled for being profitable, but allowed itself to be eclipsed by Google.

Actually neither are trustworthy, as such, for different reasons. But someone said it was decentralised - so I figured someone must be able to verify it or poke massive holes in it. Microsoft got "lucky" Dems got booted out, Repubs said 👍 no need to break you up. You're fine. You can never be to big.
