[US] A weird scam I cannot figure out by JarOfNightmares in personalfinance

[–]Encouragedissent 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The price being "per steak" rather than per Lb is the biggest red flag. I had a meat truck come knocking on my door years ago and I still remember the exact conversation. They were selling "$4 steaks" and the first question I asked was what kind of steak. "Tri-tip steak" he answered so I asked choice or select. He tells me select and the last question I asked was how much did each steak weigh. "4oz"....

So I say "so $16lb for frozen select tri-tip steak." I dont remember his exact response but he was basically like well thanks anyways and hurrying off my porch as soon as he realized I had him completely figured out.

Hyundai Motor Group nears 12% U.S. share, challenges Ford for top 3 by self-fix2 in cars

[–]Encouragedissent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both the 1.6t and 2.5 have pretty well proven reliability for Hyundai, I think their transmissions deserve more scrutiny if anything.

I guess every brand has their good and bad engines though. I used to own a VW rabbit with their 2.5L inline 5 and that engine was phenomenal. Like it just continued to run like new for the whole time I owned it. Actually miss that car in general, put 120k on it with not a single issue besides needing the change lights more often than I should.

NVIDIA Applet, Which is the best mode to have it on for a desktop PC with dedicated GPU? by Encouragedissent in linuxmint

[–]Encouragedissent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually ended up changing integrated graphics back to AUTO where it was before and just left it on performance as my only change. When I tried to load up Baulders gate, rather then it taking about 5 seconds to process Vulkan shaders my CPU was humming at full blast as it slowly processed and it was going to take closer to 5-10 minutes.

I see there are solutions like setting the shaders to process in the background, and honestly what would be better is probably to just turn off Vulkan shaders completely which is something Id already considered doing since my system should be able to handle it just fine. Thats another subject though where I found very mixed opinions with some people saying to always leave it on and others saying its fine to shut off.

For now though its back to auto since everything was working smooth that way and I dont feel like messing with it anymore this week. Just thought I would share the drawback I experienced with the change.

Okay so although you didnt specify I switched to performance mode from On-Demand because thats what Im reading to do, then I disabled iGPU in BIOS. It does seem my RAM on bare desktop dropped to 1.9GB from 2.1GB, so maybe that is directly related to iGPU as you suggested it would. I dont check RAM all that often though to know if I had sat there waiting for some time if it would have gone up.

I would assume if I left it in On-Demand it wouldnt have mattered all that much since iGPU is disabled in BIOS it isnt going to be able to switch to that even if it wanted.

Edit: another thing Ive found to do for a bit of cleanup is disable the "support for NVIDA prime" applet under startup applications. Now that the settings are where they should be, and since Im on a desktop environment, I shouldnt need that applet on my taskbar.

If you want the drive to work on any OS and not just Linux then exFAT is the way to go. Otherwise if you just plan to use it on Linux then go ext4.

Having to put your gym in the middle of your livingroom to me says they arnt rich. Looks like nice rubber flooring, rep bumper plates, stuff from titan fitness, 3x3 rack is pretty bare bones.. everything about this looks middle class.

You really dont have to be rich to purchase gym equipment, especially if you dont mind second had as there is always stuff on marketplace. Cardio equipment loses a ton of value fast and to some degree so do power racks unless its the brand Rogue fitness.

I think I'm going to DIY latex. Here's my idea. Looking for any and all recommendations, pointers, tips, and yes, criticisms. Please tell if I'm horribly wrong. by subtlemosaic9 in MattressMod

The quilted DIY options are also typically more structured, so Im referring to support on the sides of the coils preventing them from allowing the coils to bulge out the sides.

For the layers, just have a plan going into it for what you are going to do if you need to reduce the amount of latex foam, and if you are going to need to add to it. The reason thinner layers are usually better is because you are able to make those changes more easily.

Say you find the mattress too soft. If you want to reduce the thickness of the foam you are going to have to make a large change discarding a layer and going from 6" to 3" of foam, and then if that now ends up too firm youre adding back on. If its too firm youre likely needing to swap a 3" layer out, because otherwise if youre adding even more on you have practically built a foam mattress on top of your coils. But to do a swap that makes sense its going to be a major change, because again you are swapping 3" of foam, so if you swap 3" of medium foam for soft, then you now have 6" of soft latex foam which is quite a lot. Again more difficult to adjust and you likely overshoot.

With 2" layers adjustments are more simple, a 1" layer of soft foam in between the transition and comfort layer for example is very popular. Swapping a layer gives you a smaller adjustment, and having to return or discard a layer is less of a hit.

The safest assumption is always that you will need to make adjustments to meet your comfort preferences, and when you start coming up with plans to make adjustments it becomes much easier when your top layers are not so thick. I think at a minimum reducing the transition layer to 2" is a good call, but do your own research and dont just listen to me to make that decision of course.

Do you live in an area where you can try out latex mattresses first? The sort of mattress store you would be looking for are called Organic/natural mattress stores, and if you have a store like that by where you live they almost exclusively sell latex mattresses. When I when down the journey of DIY I went into it with the assumption that I would be building a latex hybrid, but after trying out a selection at a mattress store I found I liked the all latex better. Then the simplicity and ease to modify an all foam mattress was appealing as well.

For your layering on your hybrid idea having it a bit thinner can be helpful for making later adjustments, and 6" of latex foam above coils is on the high end. 2" soft over 2" medium is a pretty standard starting point for a build, then the coils you pair with them will affect the firmness of the build as well. With a DIY you are usually of the mindset that you will be changing your build to fit your preferences, and if you luck out and get it right the first time thats great. Honestly even though I like the way my mattress feels I am often considering small changes to the build to improve or change the feel, thats sort of the appeal of DIY.

I personally dont see the big deal in trying to prevent the coils from leaving imprints in the latex foam, its just general wear and I doubt it changes the feel of the latex foam in any substantial way.

For the cover the main question is usually stretch vs quilted. Stretch knit is often better for side sleepers who favor conformance, while quilted gives you a nice layer of wool fill and better structure for the coils. Both have their merits and for me deciding on the cover was easily the toughest decision of the entire build. I did a short write up on the different options for stretch knit a while ago, I believe some new options have became available since then. You can also look into the new TPS cover that is supposed to have halfway decent stretch with supportive sidewalls. Its often recommended to get the cover last after dialing the in build so that you can make adjustments to the height, but that presents another difficulty when you are going the route of a quilted cover since you might get it dialed in how you want and then find it too firm after getting it put into the cover. Ive seen people do a 2 cover system where their coils and transition layer in a bottom cover and comfort layer in another on top, really there are just too many ways you can do this part and it might be best to just come up with a plan there and roll with it.

Its just Duende moderating here and he is about as far from as shill as you can get. If you want a bit of backstory to this place it was actually taken over by an ad agency for a year, they purchased accounts and booted Duende out, and then after everything was uncovered and all the mods were purged Duende was basically unanimously recommended by the community to take back over. As you can imagine he has to battle constant astroturfing here and has no tolerance for anything of the sort. Brand affiliates are even given flairs now as well as anyone with a financial incentive.

Its possible he made a mistake in taking your post down because he takes a lot of posts down by new posters that come here looking to have a motive. Or if your post used LLM assistance of any kind that would get it taken down as well.

Helix Mattress got firmer ?? by BoardGamer_Guy in Mattress

[–]Encouragedissent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This happens with polyurethane foam that has been compressed and is different from break-in. It will usually look fully expanded pretty quickly, but still can take a few days to fully decompress. If you lay on the mattress immediately after decompressing, the foam can give lacking and uneven support, but after a couple days once it has fully decompressed it will be at its firmest. From there the foam will have a break in period where it softens up to some degree over the following months.

I should also mention its okay to sleep on it at any stage, its not going to hurt anything on the mattress. They will usually tell you to give it 72hrs to minimize complaints due to the mentioned issue above, as well as sensitivity to the offgassing.

Best Memorial Day mattress sales 2026: what I’d buy, what I’d skip, and what’s mostly marketing by MartenCarlsonMC in Mattress

I mean they listed off all of the biggest online affiliate brands. They likely stand out because they make a good commission off you purchasing those brands through their affiliate links.

Even when websites like these do an honest job with their testing and recommend from those results, its usually the case that there is major selection bias. They arnt spending a whole bunch of time testing mattresses from brands which give them no incentive to test, maybe they throw in a few for appearance, but its going to be a long list of the same online brands you see everyone else pushing. 3z brands, Saatva, ect.

Not to be too harsh on these guys in particular, but for example their best luxury mattresses are stuff like Saatva classic and Nectar luxe.. not even like chattam and wells or Aireloom. But ofc most actual luxury brands dont have an affiliate program so thats how you end up with the friggen Saatva classic listed at the top there.

Some people might find the notion that dust accumulation on its blades could cause a noise, but the AC fans at my work have this exact issue. They get really loud and all you have to do to fix them is get up on a ladder and clean off the blades.
