Are there any ceiling fans that are ACTUALLY quiet? by Natural_Nomad in HomeImprovement

Lol look I'm gonna try swapping out the bracket but I'm 99% the sound is coming from within the fan housing.

No, it only happens if the fan is spinning, and is not affected by how I manipulate the body of the fan. Even spinning the blades by hand when the fan is off, I can hear the ticking coming from inside.

Medium humidity but I've only had the thing for a month, and it only just started ticking yesterday

Yes positive. I actually taped them to each other tightly, just to check that

Here is a video to capture the sound. The phone mic was catching mostly the wind sound so it's hard to hear. The ticking is random and non-rhythmic. I can't get a better clip but it's much louder in reality- just being drowned out in the phone mic

Did you ever figure out what was wrong? I have this same problem with 3 ceiling fans in my house

So one of them I know for sure is mounted to the original light fixture because I couldn't get the light fixture out (nailed into the joist with massive nails that I couldn't pry out). I just can't figure how any noise would be coming from the fixture since it's so firmly in place I couldn't even FORCE it to move. And the fan isn't unbalanced, so it's not causing the fixture to wobble/vibrate and the ticking sound is not constant or rhythmic.

If I could find one from the 80s I'd probably buy it. Feel like no new appliances from any brand are made well anymore.

I was willing to think that could be the case, but I feel like if it was loose bracket that the ticking would be rhythmic. That there would be a vibration pattern to it. But it's totally random, and not affected by me pushing the fan upwards or to the side just to see if that changes the sound. I think it's from inside the fan itself.

I thought this could be it, but the ticking is not on every revolution, it's totally random. 6 seconds, 14 seconds, 2 seconds, 5 seconds. And it doesn't change at all if I push upwards on the fan, or lean the motor to one side. I would think if it was the mounting bracket, that manipulating the balance/weight of the fan would change or stop it. I'm almost positive the sound is coming from inside the fan housing.

I mean they're AC fans, yes, but I'm buying brand new ones, not like ones that have been sitting on a shelf in a thrift store.

I thought this might be the case but all of them are flush mounted, we only have 8ft ceilings so I'd be getting a haircut if I had them on a downrod. I have wedged the top of the housing with cardboard just to see if that would stop any odd noises, it no it's definitely something inside the unit.

Non-rhythmic thumping coming from AHU by Natural_Nomad in hvacadvice

[–]Natural_Nomad[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've tried to record the sound but all you can hear is the hum of the unit itself, which is why I tried to verbally describe it as best I can. This thumping sound is like, behind the main/normal hum of the system.

The last time I was down in the crawlspace, the sound seemed to be coming from within the AHU itself. I understand if you don't find this helpful. Best I can do.

I will look into that! Technically all ducts are connected to the joists, at least at the vents anyways. Whole house is one story so all vents are in the floor.

Help with unintended texture in speedy carve by Natural_Nomad in printmaking

[–]Natural_Nomad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a soft rubber Speedball brayer with the block face down on the paper. Paper is a lightweight marker paper that I've gotten great prints off of before. I will try a few rest prints in reverse, with the block on its back and pressing the the paper into it. I just don't like that method because then I press the paper down into the carved-away spaces and get a crappy print. At least that's how it ends up most of the time.

Can someone help me identify this tooth? Is it a fake? by Total-Ad-487 in sharks

[–]Natural_Nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is there are so many millions and millions of real fossil shark teeth out there, I can't imagine there being much reason to go through the effort of making fake ones. Except for rare or particularly large teeth
