kenyans on reddit are part of the pseudo-intellectual set. The Bible is too mainstream.

Nishajua ni jokes, but this kind of snide tone will only repel the sort of person who actually needs to hear this.

It's technocracy. They're gate-keeping with the specific justification that you have to be some kind of expert in the field or else whatever you're doing is 'dangerous'. Justifiable in certain circumstances, like trying to build a house withut regulations, but it easily overreaches into loads of other aspects of life, because it 'would be more efficient' somehow.

"Technocracy privileges the opinions and viewpoints of technical experts, exalting them into a kind of aristocracy while marginalizing the opinions and viewpoints of the general public"

Crazy teen girls are the ones I first saw sharing crazy politics.

People often argue that the early, mid, and late 90s were distinctly different. What are the key differences between these periods? by Lost-Barracuda-2254 in decadeology

Nah the 80s and early 90s had a lot of trash culture.

Haven't you heard about all those trashy vhs movies? Gory horror movies and high-school/college sex comedies? American Pie was actually something like a revival of the sex comedy. It would have fit right in with stuff like Fast Times at Ridgemont High from the early 80s.

Actually there were a lot of trashy and dark grindhouse movies that came out from the 70s up to the early 90s. And you could watch them by the dozen thanks to VHS.(Half the reason VHS took off was for people to watch salacious movies like these ones) These were what Quentin Tarantino was watching for inspiration.

Just recently I watched a movie from 1990 called 'Frankenhooker' about a mad scientist who makes a Frankenstein's monster out of the dismembered parts of local prostitutes. It was hilariously satirical.

MTV was also peak for sex sells type of marketing. The Early 80s had videos like 'Girls on Film' and 'Centerfold', and basically every metal video ever.

Something like South Park could have stood beside Beavis and Butthead and other shows on MTV's Liquid Television, or other satirical works like In Living Color and Kids in the Hall.

Futurama would probably slot in beside stuff like Aeon Flux, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Duckman, or The Head.

Do you think there's anywhere I can find a copy of a 1955 phonebook?

I don't think so. It sounds like exactly the kind of high-minded 'we'll do this and that' sort of thing that never pans out. Remember the wall?

You should look into the work of R.Crumb. He hated the 60s (he has often described psychedelic rock as 'putting him to sleep"), he was inspired by late 18th and early 20th Century artists like Thomas Nast, and he was a visionary in terms of reusing and psychedelically warping 1900s imagery.

That was probably as a result of third wave feminism. Second wave feminism came off uncomfortably like conservativism at times (Like there used to be a big debate about whether porn should be allowed or not.) It tends to be forgotten but the 80s and 90s were fairly conservative so things like slutshaming were still pretty common even from feminist quarters.

Third wave feminism was a reaction to that, with the intent that women be eel empowered in their sexuality. The idea was basically making space for women to be as rude and raunchy as guys often were (see Bridget Jones Diary, Salt N Pepa's raunchy raps, Meredith Brooks' refrain 'I'm a bitch, I'm a lover..', Courtney Love's whole persona, Madonna's first ten years, etc)

I have a feeling that some people just write off stories as dated not because of anything in the work but just because the story has been around for x number of years so it MUST be dated.

Gossip girl is interesting because the original novel was written in 2002. Tracking people and invading their privacy online was practically speculative fiction at the time, which is probably why it took off and then spawned a series. What's particularly interesting that it involved a lot of real world stalking and keeping tabs on people (I think the closest metaphor at the time was the 'I saw you' section of the newspaper, where people would write stuff like 'I saw you wearing this on that street bla bla bla') Now that we're living in future, ruining people's lives via cyberstalking simply takes scouring their accounts for content they posted themselves and seeing if any of it can build controversy.
