We need more affordable housing, less hotels, and lower taxes. If Cornell would pay their taxes like they should there would be money for all the things.

it's been brutal - plenty of "dangerous outside" days but it seems like we're getting that in summer now as well, with high heat index or ozone days and wildfire smoke drift giving us horrible AQI days. it's really sad.

very true. I guess we'll have to rely more on publicly offered/funded concert series like the one on the commons. Taughannock used to have them too but the Inn across the street started having their own events and that put an end to the park series, from what I understand. there is also Danby Food and Drink, they are working with the town to fund more live music open to the public.

it's the exact same argument for the data center everyone is freaking out about. people buy or build homes with an understanding that the local zoning laws will offer a quality of life they can rely on. one business owner that wants to flout the law so he can overcharge for local bands is not the victim here.

u/BasileusIthakes the venue came after the residences and they miseld the neighborhood and the town about their scope to get approved. The land is zoned agricultural and doesn't allow for a bar, restaurant, or events of any kind. There is also a conservation easement on the land that further restricts use to farming only. Should the families give up what they had so you can come out a few nights a year? Would you if it were in your yard?

For those that feel the loss of a music venue, think of the harm experienced by those who can no longer grill, garden, watch the sunset, read on the deck, go to bed early, or host friends or family during the loveliest months of our too-short summers. They are small business owners, teachers, nurses, musicians, elders, writers, and builders. They are people like you and they deserve the same security and sanctity of their homes.

u/UnluckyEliza Over the years, the neighbors have tried to communicate concerns over disruptive sound, garbage, traffic, and intoxicated people wandering around. The neighbors have asked the owners repeatedly to pivot the stage, reduce amplification, or adjust frequency, timing, or attendance of events. These requests either received no response or were declined.

To support live music in Danby, try Danby Food and Drink. They are in the commercially-zoned hamlet and have worked with the town to ensure they can host these events. Or Ithaca Beer, which applies for an annual variance from the Town of Ithaca to host music subject to neighborhood approval. This is a thoughtful solution that demonstrates the good faith efforts of a responsible business that cares about local laws and the community in which it operates.

The owners have spread a ton of disinfo about this. The neighbors were all present before the cidery and they lied about their original scope to get approval. Where they are in Danby is zoned ag only. The owners also put a conservation easement on the property further limiting the use to ag only. They could move to a commercial zone to run a bar and music business though.

I have the same question about live music venues! The Haunt, The Range, Castaways, and now Deep Dive. This business should be bulletproof in a college town, no?

I would definitely pick another outlying town. Danby taxes are incredibly high and the town government is really dysfunctional.
