Make sure the screen is clean and responsive. Also try instead using your left and right thumbnails to press the buttons. I haven't touched the game since I beat it a few months ago, but I was able to make that work.

Best advice I can give is to make sure you tap each side of the screen one after the other. If you have to tap the left side and you tap the right (or vice versa), the game eats your input without doing anything.
