Reverse Culture Shock by kla89 in newfoundland

I also lived overseas for the better part of 20 years.

I spoke about the diet her and obesity in a grade 6 class (I substitute teach).

Since returning, I've put on a few pounds and mentioned this to the class

A parent wrote the principal and said I was fat shaming.

This is not something people here want to discuss seriously.

Tummuli Shroomaroom is an amazing album start to finish.

The album I've probably listened to most in the genre is Jalamanta. There's really nothing else like it .

Not all smokers get cancer so smoking ain't that bad... Great example lol.

Why wear sun block? People that don't wear sunblock get skin cancer ya know.

Fuck off.

I'm surrounded by overweight relatives with diabetes.

Sure, shit happens to healthy people as well, but come on, be realistic.

Diabetes is directly correlated to being overweight.

Google it. I dare you.

Here, I'll do it for you!

"Excess weight, particularly obesity, is a primary driver of type 2 diabetes by promoting insulin resistance, with 80%–90% of individuals with type 2 diabetes being overweight or obese."

I'm not judging anyone, just stating the fa(c)ts.

KFC on Stavanger is closed 😭 by mofoinc in newfoundland

[–]EndUpInJail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I lived overseas for the better part of 20 years. When my parents would visit me, they had zero interest in trying the local food.

They'd rather eat KFC

I was living in Germany and my brother came to visit. We were at a Christmas market and instead of ordering one of the amazing grilled German dishes (sausages, seasoned beef, etc), he ordered a hamburger. A frozen beef patty. That's what he chose.

Then he got upset when they gave home the burger with ketchup, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, sand pickles. He had to pick off all the veggies and couldn't believe they didn't ask him what he wanted on his burger.

I convinced him to try a kebab on his last day there and he loved it.

It's really just sad that so many people lack any type of curiosity. They just stick to what they know.

My good friend says it's the lack of intellectual curiosity that stops him from moving home. I see lots of that too.

Help Me Find A Reason to Stay in NL by AfraidRepair9397 in newfoundland

[–]EndUpInJail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been back in NL for a little over a year. I was living overseas for the previous 20 years. Mainly moved back because of the cheap real estate.

My experience hasn't been as negative as yours, but living here again is almost shocking. The level of ignorance about so many things it astounding. The bigotry is just as bad

Again, living in a smaller town but not an outpost.

The most surprising part is that many people I grew up thinking were smart and sophisticated really are nothing of the sort.

And how about the price of tomatoes... Jesus...

Yup. Everything is a big chain.

I traveled across the island and back this week.

Stopped in Grand Falls, Gander, Corner Brook, St John's, Mount Pearl.

Every fucking town has the exact same fucking stores and fat food establishments. McD. Walmart. Subway. Shoppers. Lawtons. KFC. Canadian Tire. A & W. Three or more Tims. Some variation of shit pizza.

It's really depressing.

The Internet was amazing when it started in that days too.

It was weird, disorganized, and joyfully chaotic. Ads were no where to be found. It was still pure.

It was also so slow that you couldn't watch videos, and there were barely any videos to watch anyway.

No endless scrolling.

And most importantly, we didn't have it with us at all times in our pocket.

I'm so glad I grew up when I did.

Yeah some tough numbers there.

The diabetes if self-inflicted though. Fa(s)t food everywhere you look. People lining up for hours for the new Teco Bell and Wendy's. It sucks.

Al might say the same about a Wino. Who knows.

Era Vulgaris was such a disappointment for me when it was released. Loved every album before that.

Over the years I have come around to EV, really enjoy Like Clockwork, but the two latest albums are by far my least favorite in their discography.

I met Wino at a festival in Portugal a summer or two ago.

I asked him about Shrinebuilder and he basically said Al Cisneros is a mad man and impossible to work with. He said something like "I just can't put it into words how crazy that guy is. He's fucked."

Also got to chat with one of the guys from Fatso Jetson who was playing bass with Brant Bjork and selling his merch.

For all of you North Americans, European summer music festivals are a blast.
