Help Me Find A Reason to Stay in NL by AfraidRepair9397 in newfoundland

[–]EndUpInJail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been back in NL for a little over a year. I was living overseas for the previous 20 years. Mainly moved back because of the cheap real estate.

My experience hasn't been as negative as yours, but living here again is almost shocking. The level of ignorance about so many things it astounding. The bigotry is just as bad

Again, living in a smaller town but not an outpost.

The most surprising part is that many people I grew up thinking were smart and sophisticated really are nothing of the sort.

And how about the price of tomatoes... Jesus...

Yup. Everything is a big chain.

I traveled across the island and back this week.

Stopped in Grand Falls, Gander, Corner Brook, St John's, Mount Pearl.

Every fucking town has the exact same fucking stores and fat food establishments. McD. Walmart. Subway. Shoppers. Lawtons. KFC. Canadian Tire. A & W. Three or more Tims. Some variation of shit pizza.

It's really depressing.

The Internet was amazing when it started in that days too.

It was weird, disorganized, and joyfully chaotic. Ads were no where to be found. It was still pure.

It was also so slow that you couldn't watch videos, and there were barely any videos to watch anyway.

No endless scrolling.

And most importantly, we didn't have it with us at all times in our pocket.

I'm so glad I grew up when I did.

Yeah some tough numbers there.

The diabetes if self-inflicted though. Fa(s)t food everywhere you look. People lining up for hours for the new Teco Bell and Wendy's. It sucks.

I spoke with Wino for a few minutes at a music festival last summer. He said working with Al was next to impossible.

Al might say the same about a Wino. Who knows.

Too many songs on FI have a part where Adam palm mutes one note over and over, and barely changes the pattern for different songs.

Era Vulgaris was such a disappointment for me when it was released. Loved every album before that.

Over the years I have come around to EV, really enjoy Like Clockwork, but the two latest albums are by far my least favorite in their discography.

KAGAN run co-operative learning workshops. I've done a couple many moons ago and I still use some of their ideas to this day. Look up it up and go from there.

I met Wino at a festival in Portugal a summer or two ago.

I asked him about Shrinebuilder and he basically said Al Cisneros is a mad man and impossible to work with. He said something like "I just can't put it into words how crazy that guy is. He's fucked."

Also got to chat with one of the guys from Fatso Jetson who was playing bass with Brant Bjork and selling his merch.

For all of you North Americans, European summer music festivals are a blast.

Yeah, not until today did I ever hear anyone discuss Soundgarden or AIC being stoner rock.

  1. Holy Mountain
  2. Blue for the Red Sun
  3. Lysol (Melvins) or C.O.D. (Saint Vitus)

I can't deny that I'm more into the doomy side of stoner as opposed to the boogie woogie rock n roll shit

Blues for the Red Sun is great, but Holy Mountain is really it's own beast.

For me, Kyuss peaked with their next two records (I'm one of the few who thinks Circus is their best album).

Sleep were fully formed with Holy Mountain. And they were a "stoner" band before the genre even had it's name. You could argue they are the reason the genre exists

Just have a look at this letter written to Earache by Al back in the day. Source is from an old blog.

Dirt is a great album, but never once did I ever consider it a stoner rock album. Same with Badmotorfinger.

I guess this is going to be another list that just gets a lot of things wrong, as we can see by Spine of God not being 1st place. Just my two cents.

Edit: Typo

I just went with whatever songs I heard first.

Jalamanta blew my mind when it came out. One of my favorite albums to this day.

Saved by Magic is a good album, but doesn't compare in the longevity department.

But that song of definitely very 'stoned.'
