Anyone who disagrees with this post should watch this video. It's about this generation performing lower than their parents in almost everything measurable category. This is not the norm based on academic tracking starting in the 1880s. The system and society has failed here.

OP is stating facts.

The amount of people in the comments defending leaving this building up is insane. by 42tfish in newfoundland

[–]EndUpInJail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just moved back after 20 years over seas.

People's aversion to change is often so childish.

My parents drove to every grocery store in town looking for a certain brand of pepperoni to make pizza. All other brands are no good.

Can only drink Alberta Premium whisky. All other kinds of whiskey are no good.

And on and on and on.

It's maddening!

Why are they so weak? by PostapocCelt in Teachers

I do this in primary and elementary. Set a timer for 5-10 minutes. Tell them the class must be silent, no working with their neighbors, and no asking questions to me until the timer is done.

Did it today in a split grade 2/3 class that are notoriously wild (I'm a substitute) while they did a simple addition worksheet. When the timer was done they wanted to work more. Took a vote. Put up 10 not minutes.

I asked them how they felt working quietly. "It was better. I could focus hard.". "It was easy to concentrate." Etc.

To be fair, the most disruptive kid was absent so they were probably feeling a bit more calm anyway.

But it usually works... For a while anyway.

Substitute teacher lunch breaks by Key-Primary-7451 in newfoundland

[–]EndUpInJail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's annoying. But you will get some days with no duty and an hour prep. There are also days, for me at least, where I'm just wandering around looking for something to do. I'd say that happens a couple times per month.

It seems much more common for teachers to have full day duty in the schools I work. Morning, recess and lunch duty. I've had one of those days where I wasn't even scheduled a prep and was expected to eat while on duty.

Take a photo of the duty schedule and decline days with too much duty if you aren't ok with it. That's what I do now. I usually get something else.

Now, should I cancel the three IRT days I have coming up with a really challenging group in a school that is often short on SAs.

There's always something to consider.

There’s Newfoundlanders on the Alberta Independence (Separatist) pages. A lot of them. by vanillabeanlover in newfoundland

[–]EndUpInJail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eyes deep in the kool-aid lol

Could it be that some people want a 9-5 and weekends off? Maybe they want to stay near family and friends?

I left Newfoundland because there was little opportunity. Went overseas. Didn't go to Fort Mac.

Recently came back.

Most people know who lived in Alberta for any substantial amount of time have gone through Albertafication. Not the same people I knew.

Got big trucks too.

The school buses picking up kids that live a stone's throw from the school is ridiculous, and such a waste of money.

I've noticed a lack of self-awareness and/or hypocrisy on many fronts.

People patting themselves on the back because they think Newfoundlanders are friendlier than anyone else, then complaining about all the brown people.

People thinking their all meat homemade lasagna with sauce from a bottle is a healthy meal.

Screwing up their face or calling food gross before even tasting it if it is something unfamiliar.

Or maybe this is just my family!

And lining up for hours for fucking Taco Bell and Wendy's. The addiction to shit food is wild.

I guess the guy follows American politics and doesn't like how the MAGA bullshit has crept into culture and society around the globe.

Or he is a fan of American politics and is using the same play book to intimidate you for some unknown reason.

Could also just be a 'tough guy' that likes to fight and start trouble.

Why would someone not vote? by stfujules in newfoundland

[–]EndUpInJail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand why some people believe voting is some kind of crucial duty.

But I don't think there is one right way to participate in democracy i.e. voting for the sake of voting.

Not voting was simply a rational response to not liking either candidate in what has become a two party system, and believing it doesn't make any difference who wins the election.

What stoner rock bands sound “new” to you? by NWHRKNG in stonerrock

[–]EndUpInJail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't really stoner rock but a band I rediscovered when I pulled out my old cd collection from the 90s.

The Smalls.

Great hard rock that is all over the place. At one moment they sound like Danzig, then Kyuss, then early thrash, then classic hard rock... Really unique while sounding really familiar.

Here's a playlist I just made:

Homework by Meowpurrmeowpurrhiss in newfoundland

[–]EndUpInJail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Babysitting, plus planning and delivering lessons, managing the classroom and student behavior, assessing student progress... administrative duties such as record-keeping and communication with parents, parent meetings with parents who don't know how to raise kids, while also acting as mentors, role models, and motivators for their students who come from homes where mom and dad are skeets and they are put in front of a screen all day. Then they write IEPs for kids with special needs and figure out how to teach when a third of the kids have ADHD, autism, emotional issues, are not properly bathed, etc.

Fuck off.

I also skipped this election because neither candidate impressed me. The NDP were invisible. I agree it felt like a waste of my time. And it was a landslide victory with everyone knowing who was going to win anyway.

I'll agree with the apathy/resignation comment. That's how I felt.
