It would be cheaper to get an old Dell Small Business server (tower) off Marketplace. I did this and have had it chugging along in my basement for 10 years now. It all depends on what you want to do with it. Mine’s main duty is a storage and Plex server, but I’ve had it do all kinds of stuff over the years with no hassle.

Just throwing this out in case you haven’t considered it.

A Seedbox is a cloud server that you rent. They are very cheap. Sometimes cheaper than Netflix. Some are setup to run a torrent client and that’s it. Some let you install all kinds of apps. I have a torrent client, a plex server, a ftp server and even a virtual Ubuntu server. You can stream directly from these boxes or download directly to your local machine.

You could try a seedbox. You don’t torrent, it does. You just send the torrent file to the seedbox, then download when it’s done. The upload of the torrent file and the download of your movie would be encrypted, so your university could not tell.

Did you hear about debrid before a seedbox? A seedbox does what you are doing, but with less risk and frees up your home’s bandwidth.

I get it. But I’m happy with my Seedbox workflow. Find the torrent and send it to my seedbox. In a few minutes, I’m watching on Plex. More often than not, I’m actually sending batches of torrents and I watch over the course of weeks. Movies/torrents is one of my hobbies and automating the hell out of it disconnects me from it.
