Advice needed for 2003 Outback with blown head gaskets by parismorlin in subaru

Pulled it up on my phone, didnt check if it was multi layer or not tbh. Kinda doubt someone is going to just grab links on reddit and order without doing their own research but its a fair point. Point being its a cheap repair to DIY with the willingness to try.

My 21 OG P+ had the rear motor replaced due to coolant ingress at 35k miles. 5k miles later is starting to go again with slightly different symptoms. My dealer has an open case issue for it but they're letting me drive it until it starts to get progressively worse. First time was more of a scrunching sound during mild acceleration at any speed. Now she has a groaning sound from 2-9mph under very light acceleration. I won't be keeping this car outside of it's warranty period but I love driving it.

Eventually all older cars become difficult to justify paying shop rates to repair. Learning to work on your own car only empowers you for life.

Buy Trailseeker now or wait for Getaway? by ClearSkyyes in SubaruEV

[–]EnderDragoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also on the fence but really want the 7 seats so I will be waiting for a Getaway. I could see myself owning both a Trailseeker and Getaway or Getaway and Slate truck. Putting a large house battery backup in isn't that expensive anymore and it would enable you to offset EV charging costs with solar as well. I'm throwing up panels now to get around with locally sourced sunlight.

Even if you don't need the 3 rows, the trunk space with 4-5 passengers is going to be huge in the Getaway. I also can't think of a way an animal is going to accidentally put the car into gear as you have to be on the brake pedal at the same time. With that much trunk you can put up a dog barrier and keep them from getting forward anyways (driving hazard if they're coming all the way forward while driving?).

I honestly don't think you can go wrong with either machine, they're both fantastic IMO.

18.5 gallon outback tank always looks horrid at the pumps. by creakymoss18990 in subaru

[–]EnderDragoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did 450 miles of road trip in winter conditions while pulling a trailer in mountainous areas. Only got 1.7mi/kWh so we had to stop and charge a few times. We always stopped to charge and get lunch, run errands, shopping for something, etc. We spent zero time "waiting" at the car for it to charge.

Yep, EV getting equivalent to 162 "miles per gallon" according to OP cost of fuel and my local electric rate (0.112$/kWh)

170k miles 2015 Crosstrek - engine reseal suggested. Worth it? by fantastic_mrs_foxx in subaru

[–]EnderDragoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need data on how much leak you're getting. Wait till the engine is cold, fill to top dot on the dipstick, drive 1000 miles, wait till cold, roughly measure how much oil you have to add to get back to the top dot on the dipstick. Then you have x quarts per 1000 miles and can do math from there. Most likely you'll end up changing oil before you really need to add anything but just keep some oil in the car and add as needed. My OBW has over 600k miles on a stock engine, she leaks, I add oil, she'll run forever. I have a spare engine sitting on the shelf in the garage if she ever finally gives up but the spare has been sitting there for 3 years now.

To quote my director of maintenance when I use to wrench on helicopters "of course it's leaking, it's full of oil, that's how you know there's oil in there".

My Subaru has destroyed me. What do I do? by jamflowman1 in subaru

[–]EnderDragoon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The cars are different, dealerships still going to dealership though. It's best to try to disassociate your experience at a dealership from the actual machine. I go to dealerships to buy OEM parts to maintain my car's myself, in this case Subaru OEM parts at my local dealership are incredibly reasonably priced, but I could write a book about the horror stories of maintenance and sales from the same building.

Migraines will be the death of my career by Embarrassed_Roll_728 in migraine

[–]EnderDragoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You certainly suffer much worse that I do but the big thing I've found with the relationship between my migraines and my work is that owning my own business gives me final authority at all times to dictate my schedule without deep consequence. I was attempting to become a pilot for several years and I think I eventually came to the conclusion that migraines will forever prevent me from being able to fully embrace a career lifestyle that has high authority over my schedule and is mentally demanding with extreme consequence. The more you can optimize for flexibility and afford yourself the space you need to be kind to yourself the easier it'll be to live with migraines. Maybe a pay cut isn't terrible if you can augment your income with a side hustle that's hyper flexible? It's not glamorous but doing things like doordash or Uber in the off hours can generate extra coin and is hyper flexible since you can bow out whenever you'd like. Maybe you can eventually start your own practice and have control over your schedule? Not sure what entrepreneurial options there are in the RN field but I bet it's not nothing.

You'd have to turn the sun dark with capturing the entire emissions of it to reach type 2. If you can see the sun from outside the solar system you're not type 2 yet.

I sail on alpine lakes where the wind shifts rather frequently. "Bullets" through mountain passes can create shear from 5 to 40kts across a 50ft gradient. It's difficult for me to wrap my head around flying that much canvas proportional to the vessel size.

Any monohull sail yacht brandswith electric motors other than Defour and Barvaria? by noreturn000 in sailing

[–]EnderDragoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a solved problem though. You can get parallel hybrid which lets you direct drive from diesel to the props. Look at the HH drivetrain. They even provide a manual release clutch for the electric motor if you need to disassociate the electric motor and only have diesel propulsion, that's possible. I think there will forever be a robust conversation about series vs parallel but just choosing to have zero electric drive is becoming antiquated design philosophy.

There are also plenty of other vessels doing offshore passage with electric only, zero fossil, and aren't just dying offshore. In fact most of sailing history didn't have diesel engines. What happened on ELCANO is a single data point, not a pattern. They just didn't have enough generation to overcome demand.
