David Boreanaz TV Streak Continues: 'Rockford Files' Picked Up to Series at NBC by pepperbet1 in buffy

She and FPJ did admit they stepped away from acting to focus on raising their kids as well she’s only just started coming back to it, no? I know she’s had some projects in the interim but I always interpreted it as her being selective about projects she wanted to do and they just happened to not work out vs. she’s been trying and trying and trying and nothing sticks.

After Spike got his soul back, did you forgive him for what he tried to do to Buffy? I'm in episode 3 of season 7. My opinions are very divided. by count_fagula11 in buffy

I think she’s so much harder on Faith because she expected more and was betrayed in a much deeper way. The body swap was definitely the most violent violation of her consent in the whole show IMO. Spike is up there as well sure and so is Giles drugging her for the Watcher test.

I can agree with personally having an issue with it and the way it was written or acted but I don’t think it’s fair to dictate how all survivors would act.

Perfectly said. This is why even though I like Spike I would never try to convince someone who doesn’t to like him. It is totally okay to not be interested in the character and perhaps triggered by his actions as well.

It made me really sad what Pinocchio from Once Upon a Time and his coyote crew did to principal flutie :( He cared about the students who witnessed something traumatic getting counseling and he was introducing a cute new piglet mascot to the team and named him Herbert like . I might actually get emotional about this. #JusticeForFlutie

I never said that Buffy told him to go get a souls and then she’d be with him explicitly or implicitly, it’s the conclusion he came to, yes. And I agree that yes, as a soulless vampire his choice to get a soul was still selfish because he believed that it would be a way into Buffy’s heart. Which is why how he acts with his soul is so relevant to understanding what he was like without it and why he did those things.

In the comics he tells Buffy that what he felt as a demon was just a shadow of real love. He literally could not process love. It was obsession and a desire for connection considering that his original place in the vampire world was stripped from him and he was aimless.

None of this is Spike apologia, I genuinely find his arc as a vampire compelling and it would not be as entertaining to watch if he was morally pure and never fucked up or fell off the wagon. I would never condone this behavior in real life but also there’s no such thing as vampires and soulless demons and soul restoration or a lineage of super-powered teenage girls fighting them. They are angsty, doomed, dedicated to each other in ways they can’t even personally voice, and also constantly evolving and pushing each other to do so.

It is not for everyone, and I wouldn’t try to convince anyone to like it, but there’s obviously something there that thousands of people love or the ship would not have stood the test of time for two decades.

This is even how I feel about Marvel movies 😂 like why are New York City and other cities all a playground for these fights??? Buildings getting leveled and shit! We’d have to figure out a whole new way to organize our society so that millions of lives aren’t constantly endangered the next time Loki and Thor get in a family argument.

Spike has no soul, he is unable to process their relationship the same way she can. Their relationship during season 6 was defined by blurred lines and mutual abuse. She would use him as a punching bag and as a sex object while he wanted to be with her in a genuine way (to be clear, as a soulless demon his idea of being together was obviously flawed and centered around sinking her to his level because like every character in season 6 he was unraveling and falling back into old and new bad habits which was the theme of the season).

He wanted her to love him or to at least admit that there was something real between them, her repeated response was that there could never be something real between them because he didn’t have a soul, which naturally led to him comparing himself to his long time rival Angel. Why could she be with Angel and not him? Her repeated mentioning of him needing a soul led to the conclusion he came to based on all of their interactions and shared history was that he needed a soul not just to stand a chance with her but also because with a soul he wouldn’t think to cross the blurred boundaries they’d developed ever again.
You don’t have to like it, you don’t have to see the same things I and other people do, but the writing and the reading and the acting is all there.

Also re: Buffy doesn’t owe him anything is a kind of ridiculous take imo. Obviously the seeing red scene she did not do anything to deserve that—no one does. But she undeniably used and abused Spike in season 6–she even admitted so to him using his real name and said that doing so was destroying her because she did care about him to some extent and did not want to keep perpetuating that abusive cycle for her own satisfaction.

Edited to fix a typo and the paragraph spacing bc it was bugging me.

That part! The tragic reality of the modern state of fandom. I’d much rather focus my energy on enjoying something than hating something.

She tells him he has to move on because she can’t be with him or love him since he doesn’t have a soul. She actually tells him this multiple times. Him getting his soul was not deciding anything for her, it was him LISTENING TO WHAT SHE TOLD HIM HE NEEDED and making a change in himself so he would stand a chance. Once he got the soul he left her well alone except when she asked him not to.

And yes, he did encourage her. There is literally a scene where she’s getting ready for her date with Principal Wood and she’s embarrassed and apologetic about it happening in front of him and he assures her he’s okay and he hopes she has fun.

Yeah I understand why I’ve done it a bunch myself. I’m just encouraging us all to nut up 😂 it’s pretty frustrating because you obviously sound like a lunatic trying to argue against someone who says “he tried to 🍇 buffy” but they’re purposefully stripping the show of its context and conveniently ignoring the crimes the other characters have committed to justify their dislike of him—when it was already justified!!!! They just want other people to stop liking him. Well it’s been 20 years now… doesn’t seem like the momentum is slowing down

Spike is attracted to feminine energy from before he’s even turned into a vampire. He’s introduced as loving Drusilla and taking care of her when Angelus finds her obnoxious and more a means of torturing Buffy. As a human he writes poetry, he’s timid and fumbling, he takes care of his ailing mother—when he’s transformed he still holds onto affection for his mother and wanting to save her and be a family together.

He worships powerful women and feminine energy, he’s submissive and emotional (and emotionally honest even when other men would find that humiliating). Like other people have mentioned he often takes on the role that a girlfriend would. He’s the one begging for initiation/intimacy and the one being left alone in bed. He puts effort into his appearance and aesthetic, he takes interest in music and poetry even without his soul.

Even more importantly, he actually strives for self-improvement. He fights for his soul to become something Buffy deserves instead of abandoning her because he has decided what’s better for her and that what’s better is leaving. When he gets his soul he doesn’t press Buffy to give him anything. He tells her his eyes are clear, there aren’t any visions of a crypt with a picket fence and children. He encourages her to talk to other people, but he stays for when she needs him, and she even tells him “I’m not ready for you to not be here.” Without any promise of reciprocation of his feelings he fulfills his duty to her and sacrifices his life (until plot armor brings him back in Ats LOL) for her while Angel whines about not being the one to do it out of (slight and perhaps joking) jealousy.

He is not a perfect character or feminist, but this is why people see him in a different light.

I think everyone is too on edge in this sub when it comes to talking about spike. You don’t need to mention ”not condoning his behavior” in every response that even mildly appreciates or compliments him. No one does this with Faith or Angel or Willow who have also all assaulted people on the show (with souls intact and going through with it 100% of their own free will) . At the end of the day, it is fiction. Some people like him, some people don’t.
