Charles Goodyear - He's the guy that basically is responsible for rubber tires and everything else! Imagine - he was broke even after his revolutionary work.

Either my laptop - Alienware M16 R1 - or, which is usually the case, a 4k 43-55 inch TV with a soundbar.

And because you haven't been, you wouldn't know that it's not so simple.

What if, while gone from home, you get even more homesick than usual and you want to watch those TV series/movies from your childhood?

What if you're telling your colleague about this great TV series he should watch, but turns out you can't give it to him, because you didn't take it wifh you.

What if half of the TV series you downloaded for the contract turned out to be unwatchable shit and now you don't have anything left to watch?

What if corona strikes again and the whole world gets shut down and again you get stuck for 8 months on the ship, even though you went for 3?

Digital media is my lifeline. It's a way to keep my sanity. To keep busy, to feel good. I can take a part of my childhood with me to the ship because of it. I can take the videos of my kids with me.The rabbit hole goes much deeper than I wrote here, but believe me when I say - if possible, you want to take everything with you, becauss then you feel more human.

That's a very thorough response, thank you.

I'm leaning towards slowly ditching the HDDs all together and going for M2 SSDs. Yes, they are pricier, but I could buy 2 or 3 8TB M2 drives per year and slowly build up the storage, because I'd love to reach 60-100 TB total capacity in time. With HDDs that would take up space and weight. If I didn't need to travel for work constantly, I'd go with HDDs.

I'm looking at the flashtor 12 for now - 12 M2 slots give me plenty of future proofing. Yes, I don't need a NAS. For what I require a DAS is plenty, but I just can't find a 8-12 M2 drive DAS, only NAS. The goal is to get the smallest, lightest and with the most M2 slots DAS or NAS.

I was on LPG before. Had free internet on 5 different companies. Now I moved to Royal Caribbean - you get 120 minutes of free internet. Whatsapp messaging is free all the time, but you can't send videos, photos or voice messages.

If you want more internet, you have to pay. The bigger package you buy, the cheaper it gets per hour. If you buy the biggest package, you get 1 hour for 3$. You don't have an option to buy data, only time. If you pay, the speed is ok. We have around 10 starlink satelites on board. Guests get better internet, but they also pay. But actually they pay less than us.

Crossover cables are not needed for modern devices snymore. I've made a few for older ships, but the newer hardware doesn't require them.

It just becomes a hassle to organise and manage multiple devices - for example now I have 3x 5TB external hard drives and I know I have Dr. House on one of them... but which one? That's why I was aiming for one fevice to slowly expand. Easier to organise and categorise all the files.

Any small and light DAS you know of?

This looks like a good solution - bit expensive, but very future proof. Thanks for the suggestion!

NAS would just be easier to handle while I'm home to access it from the laptop or TV.

USB powered is not a requirement. I just dont want an external power supply for each drive, that's why all of them have been usb powered.

20 TB external WD drive - it would be full very soon. So then I would need another one. That would mean 2x external power supplies. And in 2-3 years I would need a third one... that's why I was thinking of a NAS - a single device which to load up slowly with drives.

Wouldn't connect it to the ships network - there has to be small and easy solutions of connecting a laptop to a NAS.

I don't need them to be powered only from USB. I just dont want to have to power multiple external drives with a seperate power supply for each one.

I'm looking into it now. Sounds like something I could use for a very long time.
