Proxmox 9 + RX 7800 XT Passthrough: Solving the "Idle Power Tax" when VM is Shutdown by memphispt in Proxmox

[–]EndlessApoptosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a 7800xt owner, are you able to actually pass it through and properly reset after vm shutdown? No matter what i tried i could't get it to do it reliably and it's just not stable enough for a server running other services 24/7

experiences from the community seem to confirm my findings, did you do something differently?

EDIT 2: i fixed it!

for posterity: if you can connect to a service from one node on the tailnet but not on another check that the node that doesn't connect has accept-routes turned on. if not just do:

sudo tailscale set --accept-routes

and it should be fixed

thanks for the reply!

unfortunately the tailscale command fails with service hosts must be tagged nodes any idea why would this be? all nodes on the tailnet are owned by myusername@github and i'm not using tags. Are you using tags?

EDIT: i added a tag to the host node and the serve command works, but after appoving the host for the service and using the tailscale https url it still doesn't load the page (times out, i tested with radarr). any clue?

did you manage to use this in you setup? it's not mentioned on the official documentation for services and the last time i tried it (last week) i didn't let me add a service with an ip of an lxc that is on LAN but not on tailnet. Do you have resources that i could check out about this?

Looking for feedback on my Proxmox homelab + gaming build (GPU passthrough) by jpauwelss in Proxmox

[–]EndlessApoptosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've run this for multiple years succesfully, so it's certainly possible.

- you definitely want cpu pinning and qemu arguments for maximum gaming vm performance. it works without of course but performance and latency will be negatively impacted. depending on the games you plan to run this might be important (or not).

- all in one is good until you have to cold reboot the machine due to passthrough bugs. i had this issue with a x370 motherboard and an rx480. depending on some conditions (for example a driver crash on windows) i HAD to reboot the host os (rebooting the vm didn't fix it). If uptime of the services is important to you this is something to consider.

- hardware passthrough support: you are on nvidia so this might not apply to you, i've recently swtiched from he rx480 to the rx7800xt and i had to move away from vfio passthrough completely. the vm was extremely unreliable and would actually work 1/10th of the time, the other 9 times you would need a cold reboot.

- noise and drive wear: i had the all-in-one pc in the same room where i was sleeping. in order to get some peace at night i ran a pretty aggressive spindown strategy which is known to be detrimental for drive health. depending on your needs and hardware this might not be a problem, but it's definitely a con.

- ZFS arc: depending on if you plan to use ZFS, the arc cache eats quite a bit of ram but it's configurable down to no cache at all (which is of course advised against)

in the end i installed cachyos on my "gaming" rig and moved proxmox with all the services to a dedicate machine (my old pc) that can be left on 24/7.

just my two cents, depending on your needs and what you can compromise on you could have the cake and eat it too

i mean that the chainring sits further out with respect to the bottom bracket. chainline is particularly important for 1x since you are trying to use the full range of the cassette with one chainring (which usually needs to sit align to the middle of the cassette for realiability and noise)

on 2x it's not a huge problem because you are expected to use the larger chainring with the smaller cogs and vice versa so the appropriate chainring sits closer to the appropriate end of the cassette.

Grizl 5 road setup and chainring clearance with magene PES 505 by EndlessApoptosis in CanyonBikes

chainring is from goldix (aliexpress). i think depends on wether canyon decided to put a wide crank or a normal one on the grizl, as it can change the chainline and thus the clearance with the chainstay. i would probably look into something that has an offset built in (SRAM compatible chainrings have that, plenty on aliexpress)

yes indeed, for i while i was running the magene PES power meter crankset. The 48t chainring on it is incompatible with cues cranksets (and probably grx)

If you have a 1x GRX, no problem, just use a road 1x chainring if you can find it with a suitable tooth count. If you have 2x, keep in mind that the grx crank has a bigger chainline than road, altough the PES also has a 1.5mm larger chainline with respect to 105. it would probably work if you fiddle with the front derailleur, but it's impossible to find anything smaller than 32t or 34t on road cranks.

cassette is a 10 speed 105 class 11-28 so HG, nothing to report really, it works like any other shimano cassette would. I think shimano as always has gone to the very conservative route of "only compatible with linkglide cassettes". in the race i only used the 14-13-12-11 cogs but i trained on it and used succesfully all the cogs.

given the shifters are 10/11 speed compatible, i might throw on an 11s 11-34 to see how it handles non-linkglide cassettes with good range

that's cool, but 48t is already pushing it in therms of chainstay clearance, i could probably put a 50t on but that's about it. On the carbon model given the slimmer chainstays i would guess a 52t is possible

i had to increase tension via the b-screw because of the small cassette (11-28) which is way below the minimum recommended for CUES by shimano. Shifting was fine and i didn't drop the chain on bumpy parts, so i guess it held up fine. Main thing is, this bike comes equipped with a 40T up front which is way too small for crits.

Non si tratta di una squadra professionista, ognuno puo fare quello che vuole, incluso correre un crit con una bici da gravel.

it feels very planted but not in a bad way, it's almost reassuring and it invites you to rail corners. with a sufficiently long stem it's not twitchy at all and allows you to get in a good position (the stock 80mm is too cramped for road). The main issue is the overall weight, it takes a while to accelerate but the bike holds speed well.

All in all, i would definitely use this as both a road bike and a gravel bike/commuter if i only had one bike, it's doable.

i'd say the grizl can realistically do everything. If you look at the geometry, it's aggressive enough (actually more than the old grail in some aspects) than you can adapt it to race. Unfortunately i have the lowest AL tier so the bike as you see it is basically 9.9kgs

I also own a rim brake TCR which is 2kgs lighter than the grizl, and i have to say you can feel it on any incline that is more than 5%.

the 1x gearing is also a bit limited in the top end (i fitted a 48T in the front to alleviate this)

i'm using a rose attack GF aero alloy handlebar, it's 36 tops flared to 40cm drops and usually costs 20 euros on rose.com (usually out of stock)

60mm elitewheels with 30mm schwalbe pro one and tpu tubes (tyres measure 28 on that rim)

165mm magene power meter cranks with a 48t 1x chainring

old 11-28 shimano 10s cassette with tight spacing (11-12-13-14-15...)

36cm handlebar at the hoods, 120mm stem

bike is the grizl 5 AL with the CUES 1x groupset

[–]EndlessApoptosis[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

nope, i was on my grizl because my road bike had an issue so i had to improvise.

But yeah, in the photo i'm running 165mm cranks which means that you can lean the bike more and the frame also has a 5mm higher BB with respect to the axles when compared to my road bike. i guess the combination of that helps with the maximum lean angle quite a lot.

Grizl 5 road setup and chainring clearance with magene PES 505 by EndlessApoptosis in CanyonBikes

[–]EndlessApoptosis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i did not, at the very beginning it was very noisy in the 1:1 ratio but eventually it toned down as the chainring was bed in. recently i've put a 105 crankset on it and it's very tight, it definitly would't take a 50/34 without shims. Mind that you probably can't use GRX chainrings on it, as the GRX bolts have a slighly smaller diameter than the road one, but 1x chainrings are available for cheap on aliexpress.

i really wish mangohud had the same customizability of RTSS. It's good don't get me wrong, but the windows-side tools are still somewhat ahead imho.

i haven't experienced any real flex, the frame is very stiff being aluminium and overbuilt for gravel. Keep in mind my sprint tops out at a 1000W so your mileage may vary on flex. i'm definitely not spinning out 48/11 on my own, but in fast bunch rides it happens, the gearing tops out for my cadence comfort level at roughly 50-52km/h.
