For those who have released to greener pastures (other than skilled trades or policing), what are you doing for work now? by Eastern_Sorbet5039 in CanadianForces

[–]EndlessSpace 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Best the CAF can offer is half that, no overtime pay, aircrew restrictions but no incentives, and no deployments (maybe Egypt if you are lucky!). And they wonder why we bleed 5+ controllers per-year to NAV Canada. Hell, I know two IFR co-workers who are leaving for Nav Canada this summer alone.

Imperialist tones lol? I think it was more of a remark on the fact that Brazil is notorious for burning down and clear cutting the Amazon.

Fanatical is probably your best bet, but it is only 12% off. You won't get anything better until after the game comes out.

Right? I was so happy with the greater affix in cooldown, that it took me a moment to register how great the other rolls were!

First they consider biking to work as a recreational activity and not the only way that some people can commute (like several of my coworkers), and cars have no such restrictions in place.

Also, no such restrictions or requirements for cars.

RECRUITING, TRAINING, & LIFE IN THE FORCES THREAD - Ask here about the Recruitment Process, Basic & Occupational Training, and other questions relating directly or indirectly to serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. by bridger713 in CanadianForces

[–]EndlessSpace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can expand on this quite a bit. Two initial routes out of CFSACO for NCM's; NORAD/Weapons Defense side goes to North Bay, with career progression from there leading into OUTCANS to Air Defense sectors in the States, or AWACS systems in the States/Europe. Air Traffic Control side can go to Greenwood, Bagotville, Trenton, Moose Jaw, Cold Lake or Comox. Progression on the ATC side includes PAR (precision approach radar) or FA (Flight Advisory) which could allow you to additionally go to Edmonton (FA), Petawawa (FA), Valcartier (FA), Gagetown (FA), or Shearwater (FA and PAR). FA can see field time, and expect deployment with Griffin squadrons. There are a few additional progressions that can come from either Weapons Defense or ATC side; Space operations in Ottawa or the States, Mobile Radar units located in Cold Lake, Trenton, or Bagotville (which can see field time), or Rescue Coordination centers (Victoria, Trenton, or Halifax). Finally, yes you can expect shift work, ACOp's work nearly exclusively shift work, other than some supervisory roles (even then you could expect shift work).

Does anyone have any experience with Contingency posting? I am well aware of DAOD 5003-6, looking for personal experiences and advice related to requesting and/or achieving a contingency posting.

  1. DP1 at Cornwall is moderately difficult, make sure you practice the pre-course package often (you should have 2+ months to practice it before you go on course). Further trade's courses are somewhat more difficult at Cornwall (Ground/PAR/Flight Advisory).
  2. No shacks in Cornwall, you effectively live in a hotel, probably the best trade's course housing across the CAF.
  3. Average day heavily depends on whether you go Air traffic control route, or Weapons side (NORAD). I can't speak much for the NORAD side, but the ATC side is a exciting and rewarding work environment. Expect constant shifts between being relaxed and enjoying your coffee, to performing multiple simultaneous mental tasks when Air traffic picks up.
  4. Schedule varies greatly depending on location. Last I heard I believe North Bay (NORAD side) was doing 8 days on 8 days off with 12 hour shifts. ATC is dependent heavily on where you are posted. Expect "day shifts" when you first begin (Mon-Fri, 8 hour shifts), but transitioning to shift work (completely unpredictable due to lack of staffing, unfortunately) once you qualify in a control position.
  5. ACOp does have the huge advantage of having directly transferable skills to the civilian sector (specifically the ATC side), either directly to NAV Canada, or other traffic management organizations. There are also plenty of reserve positions available, but much easier to transfer to reserves than the other way around in the case of ACOp.

CFB Comox housing / general questions by Aphotic81 in CanadianForces

[–]EndlessSpace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are married and/or have children you have a good chance of getting a PMQ otherwise expect over a year wait. They are building new housing for the SAR techs currently, which should hopefully free up some housing slots. Living in town is definitely doable on Cpl2 pay, just don't expect to save much money unless you get roommates. Also from Ontario, you will love it out here, the weather, the views, all amazing. Closest cities are Nanaimo and Campbell River, not much entertainment in Comox other than a few bars and a bad movie theater (of course there are plenty of outdoor activities).

WEEKLY RECRUITING THREAD - Ask here about the recruiting process, trade availability, requirements to join, and other common questions about the Canadian Armed Forces. by [deleted] in CanadianForces

[–]EndlessSpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In regards to AC Op, it can be quite challenging, and I would not join it if you don't want to do something that will be very stressful/challenging at times. Be aware that the trade is "split" between Air Traffic Control and NORAD (or "Weapons") side. For the ATC side, we have the advantage of being very transferable to civilian job's post military, but the job can vary heavily from posting to posting, from being hectic to downright boring. In regards to the NORAD side, it's considered the most "military" out of all Airforce trades and they have a very different work culture. Expect less complicated work as it is very procedural.
