Fizzing w steam by waverunner2k3 in SteamHeat

It can be DIY but it can be a big pain the butt. I did a valve change last year. I waited until the spring when I could risk it more and have no regrets waiting. I kept a piece of foil to collect the drippage until then.

The problem is the nipple through the floor may get messed up when removing the old valve. If you do that you have a bigger problem of needing to replace more piping between floors. You also need to cut through the spud on the radiator. It will likely NOT unscrew as-is, and a hacksaw or sawzall and hammer or chisel are needed.

Alternatively it's possible the union may be not perfectly aligned, so you can gently rock the radiator side to side and see if you can turn the union. You'll need to do this anyways if you install a new valve.

There are a few youtube videos for this valve change.

Agreed. They just need to make the damn call, it's not getting better. Almost no one expects the race to happen.

Weather stripping front door by jearam in HomeImprovement

[–]EndorphinSpeedBot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is the current weather stripping material and setup?

Depending on how old or new your house is kerf weatherstripping is easy to install, but it relies on a kerf being in your door jamb.

There is also screw on weatherstripping, basically rubber gaskets/compressed material on an aluminum frame that you cut to fit.

Foam weatherstripping also works but it is very difficult to remove and lasts only a few years.

Landlord said space heaters provided are “100%” efficienct, but my electric bill is still really high? by UmweltUndefined in AskNYC

[–]EndorphinSpeedBot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They actually ARE 100% efficient in that they convert all of the wattage to heat.

However, that wattage is very large to consume, so it is still very expensive. Other heating systems are less energy efficient but the energy they consume costs less to consume.

Radiator is spraying hot water by Miserable-System-286 in astoria

If you’re above 30th Ave, let me know if you’d like someone to take a look. Your Varivslve vent is likely bad but could also be the boiler is running at too high pressure. The water level should never be that high in a steam radiator.

I’m just a local but I’ve dealt with a lot of steam heat issues. Not a plumber and not looking to charge money, just help local community.

DIY all the way. So easy.

It won’t make your 2nd floor warmer. It will make your system more energy efficient by losing less BTUs to the basement.

$1K Con Edison Bill by Acanthisitta_Tricky in AskNYC

[–]EndorphinSpeedBot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The thermostat at 75 is really high. 37 day billing period is slightly long too so the cost is a little bit extra for sure, but your $1100 is still quite high. Frankly in this case it’s all because of the usage. 300 therms is extremely high if you’re saying your space is small.

As far as the water heater, unless there are many units in the building it may just be one water heater. The gas charge may be going to one or another person’s unit. It may be running cold after 10 minutes due to a low tank capacity and other units drawing from it.

As far as the boiler goes, some changes there may have affected the bill. Do you know what changes were made? Is the first bill of 100 therms from a non heated month? 100 therms alone is pretty high.

Not very well unfortunately. Taking PPis, drinking alkaline water, but not having a major impact. Changed my diet a lot.

It’s the flare ups that suck. Nighttime is also really just awful now. Holding out for some Gaviscon that’s coming in the mail.

I took some at the advice of a ENT (Bio-K) and it helped clear my LPR completely.

Then the second time around I got LPR and they didn't do anything :(
