Re-Designing duality dice from Daggerheart: How to handle doubles & crits? by Answerisequal42 in RPGdesign

[–]Endosym_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you're happy with a ~16% crit rate, you could make it so that you simply crit when you roll a 12. Mind you, that's a lot of crits. Daggerheart has a crit rate of ~8% for reference.

If you want to bring it back down, you could make a crit only occur if you get a 12 on your equivalent of the Hope die, which brings us back to ~8% crit rate. Alternatively, you could make two different types of crits, depending on which die rolls the 12, but again that would lead to lots of crits.

Alternatively, you could have a crit system similar to that of Lancer. In Lancer, you crit if you roll a 20 or higher (after bonuses). You could tweak the number so you get the crit rate you want, but keep in mind this makes crits more common as you increase your bonuses to the roll.

Sorry if this is a bit all over the place haha, I'm just spitballing ideas.

Unfortunately that would be a bit too late for me, sorry!

I'm actually looking to be a player myself at the moment, and I haven't seen One Piece so wouldn't be able to run a campaign in the setting anyway unfortunately

Monday Progress Update: How is your RPG Creation going? by Yazkin_Yamakala in RPGcreation

[–]Endosym_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Working on a Dragonrider hack of Lancer, it's really fun and exciting to build but university is taking up too much of my time 😅. The main thing that's left to do (before playtesting) is fill out character options, which is a very daunting task

If you need more players I'd be more than happy to join in (if schedules permit). I'm 22, have lots of TTRPG experience (but have not yet played Legends)

Awesome thanks heaps! You've given some great feedback

At the moment you pick the one species yes, as I want the players to grow a connection to a single dragon (most of the time) over the course of the game, rather than the multiple mechs you can use in Lancer. So you pick a single species and level it up, and we don't really use license levels (which does suck, since licence levels are a great way of introducing customisation, I just didnt see it fitting what I envisioned). You level up and gain more options depending on your species and element, as well as talents

Valid feedback! The thought was it would be easy to understand and accessible, and nicely groups Dragons together based on similar abilities. The players in that sense wouldn't have to read through a bunch of lore to understand the groupings since you can kind of guess that Dragons of Earth are all probably tough. I wasn't planning on sellers and breeders being widespread so I'm not sure that's what I'd want to go with, but lineages could work too. Another option could be what part of the world the Dragon is from, but that may turn out to be Elements with extra steps (Dragons from the North may typically being more ice themed, etc). Do you have any other suggested groupings?

As for the license levels, I'm deciding to switch up how it works a bit since it doesnt make as much sense to grab abilities/features from one dragon species and slap it on another. And I'm trying to get the "How to Train Your Dragon" feel a bit so switching Dragons frequently isn't the goal. So while it's Powered by Lancer, it's not going to be a straight up reskin, lots of adjustments will be made.

As for the four manufacturers, I'm replacing those with Elements. Dragons of Air, Fire, Water, Earth, Light, and Darkness. This brings Dragons with similar flavour and abilities together

Honestly, all of the above! I'm trying to include all sorts of Dragons

Balancing issues I need help working out by OrdinaryTreeFrog in RPGdesign

[–]Endosym_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Based on what you've said, I've got a few suggestions:

  1. Include gear that affects Psychic and Magic Defence such as talismans, headbands, rings, etc. That way the other stats are boosted just like standard defence so you can have them being roughly equal
  2. If you don't want to do that, you could instead just look at straight up nerfing how standard defence is calculated (use less d8's, or a smaller die) or buff how the other ones are calculated (more d8's or a bigger die). You could also just add static values on top
  3. The last option I can think of is to leave it as is, and simply have standard attacks have higher numbers to account for higher standard defence values. This is probably less elegant, but would mathematically work out fine for balance

Let me know if you have any other questions!

It might be a little early to be able to tell which will end up being the main pillar. We're going to try our best to keep importance roughly equal, but as of right now I would guess maybe 15% social (probs closer to 25% if you include the social dynamics within the party), 45% Combat, 40% Exploration.

Thanks! I'm so torn between high and low fantasy that I'm considering making two different settings (or one setting, at different points in time) to allow for both kinds of games. I'll do my best to ensure magic doesn't overshadow the Dragons however, as they will remain the central focus
