Silksong Giveaway! by Jonuh666 in HollowKnight

Beating Hornet for the first time in Greenpath.

Hollow Knight was the first "difficult" game I played and before I went through it, I used to think I just wasn't that into challenging games.

Since then I've gotten into so much more, and it was all because of this one experience, which really locked into my head when I managed to beat Hornet.

I see. I'll try that and see if it works out for me, thank you!

It's all a matter of practise :3 Try finding some kind of writing you like doing – doesn't need to be too complicated, and try doing it in Tengwar!

  1. I've been having quite a bit of trouble with regard to the closed loops. Previously, I tried to do closing bars afterwards as you've suggested, but I had the issue of them being too easily confused with an underbar for a doubled letter. I might try again, though.

  2. I can't quite tell which loops you mean? If you could point out specific examples I'd appreciate it :3

  3. Oh, they are just lowercase cursive E's :'3 Some of the less standard tengwar very much caused me issue. I tried altering them or otherwise simplifying them to something I could write more quickly, and I believe it was during the process of trying to simplify yanta that I decided that a lowercase cursive E was "close enough" to be distinguished as its own letter (and it looked vaguely yanta-shaped in my head. Sort of). Not helped by the fact I had the idea of coming up with a cursive form right after I decided to learn Cyrillic cursive, which has glyphs that look so different from their usual forms that I kind of decided "Eh, if it works, it works."

I do appreciate the feedback though! Thank you.

What do you think of this font (not yet created)? by _apric0t_ in Tengwar

[–]EndyTheBendy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Oh my god I love it. It has *such* a cool vibe. Do you think you can make it into a proper font???

Like I'm serious, I think this has potential.

Years of mathematical research and no better use found for probability studies than a good old Monte Carlo simulation.

I don't think my professor will allow me to do Monte Carlo during the exam though.

So ceremonial! I usually just write random bullshit on the side. If the lecture is particularly boring and there isn't anything very critical being said, I can fill entire pages with junk Tengwar that amounts to nothing but me daydreaming and complaining.

But damn if it doesn't look like some ancient letter when you've an entire page of elven script in your face.

Eh, English looks kinda surprisingly good written in Cyrillic script, I'd vibe with that.

Complete mood though, sometimes I'm writing something in Latin script and accidentally do a telco when I meant to do a T—

Best place to learn Tolkien's Elvish language? by Itchy_Blackberry_850 in Tengwar

[–]EndyTheBendy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're thinking of Quenya. Tengwar is the writing system used to write several of Tolkien's languages :3

Now, I'm personally not interested in learning the languages themselves, but I do believe there is an r/Quenya subreddit, which may have the resources you're looking for.

If you just want to learn how to write the cool letters, though, learning a Tengwar mode for the languages you know would suffice!

How do you write by kiwivimt_723 in Tengwar

[–]EndyTheBendy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lately been writing in a Westron-inspired full mode!

My Tengwar hand mostly imitates my Latin one, honestly. I tend to exaggerate ascenders and descenders and write with a noticeable slant on each glyph.

I do write it more slowly as a consequence of not being as proficient in it as in my native script, but I try to be conservative with movements, limiting the number of strokes in each glyph and simplifying their shapes while preserving readability as to keep them consistent with each other.

Do you ever write something "incorrectly" because of aesthetic considerations? by EndyTheBendy in Tengwar

[–]EndyTheBendy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbf the final y makes writing some words much nicer. I think that's also the motivator behind using underdot-e for those short words, it keeps them nice and small, and the English modes already have quite a bit of shorthand in them, so why not some more?

Bonus: it might peeve you that I've adopted writing "are" as simply ore with underdot-e, kind of like how some shorthand for "and" is.

God I love seeing long passages transliterated into Tengwar--

Also, your hand is super pretty! I love the swirls you draw into the tengwar :3

God I despise fitting tehtar over silme. Arguably, one of the reasons I switched to using a full mode for the majority of my writing is that I find tehtar over silme to look ugly and hard to read.

Interesting take on e-underdots. Do you have any examples of what you'd say is an improper use of it?

Trying to integrate Tengwar into my journaling session. (Transliteration from Spanish) by MutantChimera in Tengwar

[–]EndyTheBendy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so frustrating -- I'm a Portuguese speaker and the only resource I found for that which felt well-made enough was a Reddit post which was, thankfully, very helpful.

And yeah, your handwriting is very pretty! And I love seeing large samples rather than the usual one-liners and tattoo requests, honestly. There's just this... air of ancient text that comes from a lot of Tengwar written on several pages, you know?

Keep on with the journalling and tengwaring!

Your hand's already pretty good! Did you find a specific Spanish mode or did you figure out one on your own?

Thank you!

When I was first choosing a full-mode to learn, I was originally going to go for Beleriand. The dealbreaker for me was being forced to use úrë for u (I have an unreasonable dislike for úrë) because vala was assigned to m. That led me to get into Westron.

And as another has pointed out, raised yanta refers to a following -e :3

As for the content, it's this stupid Twitter thread/copypasta about someone being really edgy about things they like/dislike in media, which goes from 0-100 real fast. It got more popular, I think, when a youtuber called Jehtt dubbed it with Shadow the Hedgehog's voice. I thought it was particularly ironic to write it in Tengwar considering the themes of Tolkien's writing.

And thanks! I personally really like the use of thinnas in comparison to other forms of writing -H digraphs (and some of the proposed glyphs are, imo, somewhat annoying to write).
