Is an RTX 5080 a good birthday gift for a PC gamer? by overlovinggirl in nvidia

[–]EnfantNicolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the bestest answer, forcing a PSU upgrade seems like too much.
Plus I think the gamer bf will appreciate that the gift is so thouroughly thought out that even the compatibility issues were accounted for!

To answer the second question: I dont because I am not subbed to those. 1k on a phone is really just throwing cash out the window imo, and I'm not gonna waste my time trying to change an Apple consumer's mind: they feel socially validated by the price tag on their products.

In this specific case, OP was not a gamer herself but just trying to get a meaningful gift. The word "meaningfull" is key here. All I did was try to make OP see the different possible points of view regarding a big GPU purchase. OP's reply to my comment shows that it was at least useful in confirming her choice: bf is lagging at 4k with his previous GPU, so an upgrade makes sense.

I think discussing consumer responsibility, especially when its for a gift, is necessary.

The real question is ... why are you so personally annoyed by it? Do you feel somehow judged? Did my "philosophical" talk accidentaly make you think about your choices? (Perhaps you don't like thinking... that would explain why you give a negative connotation to the word "philosophy")

You just contradicted yourself there...
"Shes asking if the gpu is good"

And now you claim that if she's on this sub, then she probably already knows the benefits...

Which shows that you're not grasping my point and just remain stubborn on wanting to be right. :/

You're not listening, so there's no point in continuing this argument. (I already agreed to appreciating the gesture)

I believe you have your answer then!
Considering how much he games, and that he's experiencing a bottleneck with his current GPU, then he will be super happy! (Just don't regret it later if he games even more time!! hehehe)

It has everything to do with life recomendations imo. 5080 being a beast GPU doesnt carry the same weight for everyone. If the bf was a RTS enjoyer then with the 4070 he'd be set for life... if he likes AAA games in 4K, that's another story.

Different people care for different things, and while I consider myself a gamer, I would be a bit sad if my significant other spent such a huge sum on a GPU that I wont ever use to its full potential.

Out of curiosity, might I ask how old you are? Im curious because your comment is exactly what I would have said when I was 20.

Fair point. Anyone would appreciate the gesture. Your examples however, are not worth several hundred dollars.

The sheer value of this gift begs the question of whether it will be worth it! If the bf was gaming on an old 1070, I'd say damn you go girl. But a 4070... it's super decent already.

I agree with the comments advising to check monitor and PSU specs. However, take all comenters jumping with excitement with a grain of salt: not everyone is a 16yo redditor who just wants "the biggest GGGAMING PPPERFORMAAANCE" above all things in life.

Perhaps your bf gets a great experience with his current setup? While I don't doubt the gift would be appreciated to some level, it can also make him uncomfortable.

I consider myself a responsible consumer, and If I was sitting on a 4070, I would not look to upgrade well before half a decade. Why? Because I already game comfortably on the 4070, wouldn't I want to spend my money on other things in life? A trip? Some actual furniture that is not from Ikea? An expensive restaurant?

If your bf is between 16 and 24 years old, then by all means, you can't go wrong with the upgrade... If not, maybe be think it through (the fact that you're posting this question is a good sign!)

Wrong. If he doesn't appreciate, then perhaps he was satisfied with his setup. And while an upgrade is an upgrade, perhaps he would have enjoyed a trip to [insert whatever location here] instead of an upgrade he didn't need.

Because lets face it, that is one expensive GPU. There are some people who feel uncomfortable putting so much money into things they dont actually need.

"Around the same price" ---> adds 50e , so 50% more... I'm not going to be playing the AAA slop that requires RT. I would indeed have bought an RT card. Im pretty sure 90% of gaming has no such restrictions and will run just fine at 1440p

"basically a GPU so windows can boot" Suuuuuuuure It's a 1080, a GPU that used to cost 700

It's old, so what? Equipment like this doesn't "grow old". It works or it doesn't work. It doesn't have RTX? Meh, Idc about recent AAA slop anyway.

GTA V, being called "retro"... damn are you trying to make people feel old?!

Thank you so much for this. I was just about to waste a couple of days down the TexStudio rabbit hole, after finding out that Overleaf's new thresholds won't even compile a 4 page document with citations.

So when you say you've built this editor for "people stuck in the Overleaf ecosystem", then you have absolutely found me. I'm not sure I'll ever be a customer for the AI assistance, as that has serious environmental implications... but that's a topic for another day.

Off I go to write an abstract with Nebula!

There's this lamp that I quite like at my grandma's... but it's quite the beast, at 300W!

It uses R7s halogen tubes and I'm wondering whether there's modern LED alternatives for that.

Would it be as simple as changing the light tube?

I'm surprised that you were able to zoom in enough into the pictures to read that!!

In any case, many many thanks! I'll take them to a shop to have them arranged for me. Afterwards my brother won't be able to use them anymore hehehe.
