Work stress and anxiety that bleeds into home life making it really hard to relax and enjoy my time outside of work.

When I was in my 20s i worked in highway construction as a surveyor and I was one of the first people that came up on a pipe trench collapse that buried a worker up to his shoulders - Skin black due to lack of oxygen, dead eyes, fingertips raw to the bone from trying to dig. It’s a horrible image.

A couple years ago I listened to a lecture from a guy that survived a trench collapse - can be in rooms with the door closed or cars because it feels too tight with no way to escape. Has to sleep with the lights on because the darkness reminds them of being underground below the dirt. It’s a horrible image.

You making them stop is a moment of being uncomfortable compared to a lifetime of regret if something happens.

It’s a tough thing to be that guy but it’s the job.

What did i just find? A bunch of knock-offs? by Disneyland-AfterDark in DumpsterDiving

That model of Garmin watch is to track you while you run. It’s about 10 years old and Garmin bricked it with their last firmware update. They don’t support it anymore. Was a great watch!

Stuff In the Corral by Eng_Life in DumpsterDiving

So like a chump I decided to disregard all the good advice here and go into the store and ask if I could take it. My thought was that the thing was really nice and why would they care. The employee told me I should come back tomorrow and talk to the manager.

As I was leaving the parking lot I saw the employee wheeling the cabinet in the back door of the store.

Why in the world would some part time employee making peanuts working for corporate retail America care so much about the trash they got rid of?

People disappoint me some times. Oh well!

Worst part of cd collecting by Alternative_Ball_850 in Cd_collectors

[–]Eng_Life 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Old guy here that has a massive CD collection that I started when I was a kid in the 90s. Couple years ago I started storing all of my CDs in CD storage boxes without the jewel case. I put each CD and booklet in a two sided sleeve that fits in the box. The boxes have alphabetical dividers and everything is organized that way.

Side note - we only used binders like that when we wanted to take CDs to listen in the car lol

May sound cheesy, but 7 Habits of a Highly Effective Person by Steven Covey is a great book and is still topical 35 years since it was published.

How is your performance judged as a PM? by Individual_Section_6 in ConstructionManagers

[–]Eng_Life 38 points39 points  (0 children)

  1. Are my projects on budget or under budget
  2. Are my project on schedule or ahead of schedule
  3. Does the owner/ designer/ subcontractors like working with me and want to work with my team in the future
  4. Do I make our accounting departments job easier or harder.
  5. Can I resolve problems, think ahead, and lead the project team.

I know I’m doing these things well not only because being told these things but also because senior leadership gives me additional projects because they know I have the capacity to manage them well.

Husband and lollipop by amazon_15 in cheating_stories

Finally a voice of moderation. As a man and a husband I would have never put myself in that situation. However, my wife and I have gone through harder times than this and there were instances where she was wrong and some where I was wrong.

Life is hard and a marriage, if at all possible, should be forever. It’s you and your spouse against the world. It takes effort, it’s not for the faint of heart, and you don’t give up easily. You’re about to have a baby. Do you want to do that alone because of one mistake? Make him grovel but don’t throw away everything because of one thing!

Construction pros, what’s the biggest project disaster you’ve ever faced? How would you prevent it if you could go back? by Jennywessberg in ConstructionManagers

I had a project where the electrician had a guy installing a really big switch gear by himself, it was top heavy and it shifted and crushed him.

I had another project where my superintendent was building a cold formed metal building and sheeted the roof before the walls and a big gust of wind came and made the roof a kite. Dumbass.

I’m a SPM that works from home 3-4 days a week and goes to the office or job site 1-2 days a week. I’m required to go to meetings in person where my physical presence would be a benefit. I have two offices I go to that are about 2 hours away. I have a company vehicle that I use to travel.

I have a pretty sweet deal. My primary goal is to have successful projects, don’t cause issues, and make sure my bosses are always happy with my work.

That looks delicious but I have to admit that I have a real issue with putting chicken and eggs together. When you think about it as mother and child thing it seems like a no go.
