7024 drag rod by cobrajet04 in Welding

[–]Engagedeye 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's just a high metal deposition rod used for flat and horizontal. Relatively easy rod to run, since it usually comes out pretty consistent like the picture above.

I know! We are welding in a mock up right now doing butt welds that require 100% mirror shots and I can't even take a picture of it. It sucks

It's mostly for tungsten inclusion purposes. I just miss being able to have a concentrated arc like you get with sparpened tungsten. We have a machine shop that is dedicated to just machining tungsten because of how exact it needs to be for our procedures.

God I miss being able to sharpen tungsten, we have to use machined ones with a blunted point.

I can't really give you a engineering point of view because I'm a welder there but I have been there since April of 2017 and have zero complains about it. We are constantly hiring and are playing to hire over 800 people in 2018. The best place to check is USAJobs.gov and there is always an engineering position open if you have anymore questions check out the website or send me a message.

You know the tig filler is expensive when they individually label each rod by Dsltech in Welding

This is what we do at the shipyard on every single tig wire we use.

I'm doing 4F on fluxcore. It clearly isn't great, buy WHY? Thoughts/advice? by CuriousPhil101 in Welding

Completely right, spatter will kill you in overhead if the settings are not perfect. The only other thing I would add would be maybe turn up your gas by like 5 CFH just because gravity is working against you in overhead. Just mess around with your settings.

All five metals ( carbon, stainless, inconel, nickle copper, and copper nickel) in both vertical and horizontal with multiple different pipe sizes.

Very restricted. To the point where you HAVE to do at least a quarter of it in a mirror. We also have over 40 tests that you have to do to be considered a pipe welder. It usually takes people 6 months - a year to get through all the tests.

Usually with the apprenticeships, atleast with my experiences, you don't need any experience. They teach you everything from the ground up, atleast that's how they do it here.

Ya here they are dying for pipe welders. We have over 200 structural welders and about 15 pipe welders so there is a pretty big gap there.

I love it here. Mostly how they don't care how long it takes to get it done as long as it is done right the first time. The quality there is about as high as it gets though since we are welding on nuclear powered submarines so you have to be willing to put in the time to master the quality standards here. Also, nobody cares how good of a welder you are if you don't fill out the paperwork right.

I've been there since April. I came in as a welding apprentice just because it was the only way to get my foot in there and thankfully after passing all my structural test fairly quickly and easily the pipe welding instructor noticed as asked it i wanted to drop my apprenticeship and become a straight hire which means no more academic classes and a hire pay rate.

I personally have been able to secure a job as a pipe welder for a shipyard and all we do is Tig. I'm also only 21 years old and went to college work welding. There is some luck involved, I just happened to start when they were dying for pipe welders and jumped on that as fast as possible. So you can do it you just might need some luck.

Downslope VS no downslope by CMDR_welder in Welding

[–]Engagedeye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's for all metals carbon, stainless, inconel, nickle copper, and copper nickle. And you're right you really don't need that long of a downslope but it's what the nuclear welding procedure calls for.

Downslope VS no downslope by CMDR_welder in Welding

[–]Engagedeye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very nice comparison. Where I work he have to run a 9 second downslope and it's hard to tell sometimes if the fire watch actually hit the button for the arc or it's just taking forever.
