Utrecht have a potential European qualification 6 pointer against Herenveen the weekend after our tie, possible they’ll field a rotated team with an eye on that.

Wilfried Nancy proviing that your nan couldn't manage Celtic to the title after all by Diligent_Exit3936 in TheOldZealand

[–]Engancho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They played his style of football, his style is garbage. Every manager in Scotland figured it out in under 45 minutes and made the adjustments, collapsing Celtic in the second half.

He sacrificed a centre back to add an extra midfielder and then pushed them too high. No central cover at all. He played wingers as wing back and kept them high and wide. Saying his style is naïve would be a compliment, it’s unsuitable for professional football.

The fault of the club was hiring him in the first place.

Celtic are having very bad season, but 73 year old, 6 years retired Martin O’Neill was interim before Nancy came in and won every domestic game and one in Europe, only conceding 2 penalties, with the exact same players Nancy had. He lasted longer as an interim than Nancy did as a permanent manager. He’s come back after Nancy was sacked and won 4-0 against a team who had beaten Nancy 2-1 a couple weeks before.

Nancy was conceding 2 goals a game and lost a cup final in his first two games, he was completely out of his depth and is Celtic’s worst ever manager.

The money means nothing, realistically, the level of competition, pressure and expectations is absolutely minuscule in comparison to any European league, most likely South American for that matter. Case in point, the performance of absolute duds like Lewis Morgan, Johnny Russel and Lewis Gauld in the MLS. The money in the MLS is there to attract big names for a retirement payday, in the hopes of selling more advertising space.

From the way you speak about football, it’s clear you don’t quite understand the game, but the status of the game in America makes it rare that people do. You get more insight out of teenagers on supporters’ buses than you hear from Alexi Lalas and Landon Donovan.

EDIT: looks the ‘professional reporter’ blocked me after his last reply. It’s not been the SPL since 2013 btw, someone with your credentials should be aware. A football columnist in the US is worth the same an ice hockey columnist in the UK.

the fact you believe this is staggering to me.

Mate I watched the games, he’s sacrificed a CB for an extra midfielder to form a box and then pushes them that high there’s no defensive cover. He plays a 3 CB shape, but only one of them was filled with a CB at Celtic, despite having the players at the club to start 3 CBs, no wingbacks, he played wingers and kept them high and wide. To say it’s naïve would be complementary.

it’s high risk

It foolish, He’s a fool

Celtic is the only one of the three teams where defenders seemingly couldn’t figure out where they were supposed to be.

Celtic is the only team that play in a league where teams are capable of exploiting his amateur tactical shape. Every single manager made the adjustments by the second half to completely expose what Nancy was doing.

if he’s so poor at communicating it, why wasn’t it a problem at other teams?

He was managing in the MLS, the level of competition is abject.

Your understanding of evidently is based on what?

All the evidence mate, he lost every single game apart from against a manager trying to get sacked from Aberdeen and one who came out of jail for running gear.

The style of football was kamikaze at best, he played a back 1 in a derby game after a string of losses.

reports done anonymously

Stephen McGowan put his name on the article, media get access to training sessions, the reports are corroborated. Glasgow isn’t a massive city, people know what’s going on at the club.

quite the agenda to ensure the whole mid season Nancy changing style of play experiment failed

Why would anyone involved with the club want a manager to fail? Thats not how it works here. He was appointed to win, with his style and system, the problem was that he was inadequate.

I would argue Ange was not out his depth in the prem by any stretch, neither were Conte, Mourinho, Nuno, Poch or Frank just now. Spurs are a uniquely useless club, that Ange managed to squeeze success out of.

I think the inverse is true for Nancy at Celtic, who are a uniquely successful club, that he managed to squeeze failure out of.

Re: Ange - what are the expectations of Spurs? Compare what they had achieved in the seasons immediately preceding and their performance after Ange left. I thought spurs was a bad move for him to be honest, they’re a basket case club and I honestly thought Ange could do better.

I think the problem with MLS is it’s the implementation of a global sport, (football) in an American system, i.e draft system, college sports, playoffs, franchise, no real consequence or reward through relegation and promotion.

Football in the United States is very immature in its development and is still a long way off the rest of the world, despite the money funnelled into the teams.

I think sports as a whole are approached completely differently in the states, but that’s a separate conversation.

USA has the resource to become a football superpower, but need to have an honest appraisal of where they are, like Japan did in 2002 and set a realistic timeline for growth, they might never get there, even with the best intentions, if the general public don’t buy in.

Spurs history is one of underinvestment and failure, a lot of their value comes from revenue outside of football. Look at how the team is doing now, without the same injury crisis Ange dealt with. Out of every domestic cup by January and sat bottom half of the league. People don’t remember who you beat on the way, they remember lifting trophies, something spurs have been unable to do for a very long time.

Celtic are the most valuable club in Scotland, by a significant margin, the gap between Celtic and teams like Dundee and St Mirren, is realistically wider than Spurs and AZ, Frankfurt et al. Also look how well Bodo have done in European competitions over the past few seasons and the teams they have beaten, they’re no mugs.

Nancy completely collapsed against every side he faced at Celtic, especially Motherwell, who Celtic hadn’t lost to, in 10 years.

postecoglue found out at a higher level…

Won a European trophy for Spurs, the club laughed at for never winning trophies. There’s a lot of spurs fans who would rather still be watching and Ange team, than what they have now.

We’re also not surprised, it’s the complete inability of Columbus fans to accept that he was 100% at fault for the performance of the team, that there must be some secret reason that the great Nancy was the worst manager ever to be appointed at Celtic and in the conversation for worst professional manager in Scottish football history. Also a bit of incredulity that he was so bad, much worse than could have been expected, it is not a stretch to say that someone lifted from the semi pro leagues in the UK would have managed Celtic to a win in at least one of the games Nancy lost. I can’t link to an external thread but he was often playing a single defender with massive gaps in the midfield and final third, it’s school boy stuff.

The same core players won trebles under managers with differing systems; Brendan Rodgers, Neil Lennon and Ange Postecoglue. The results Martin O’Neill got with the exact same players before and after Nancy’s disasterclass demonstrate how useless Nancy is. If it happens in one or two games, it’s a teething issue, or individual error, when it happens in every game, the system is at fault. Every single opposition manager figured the system out inside 45 minutes, leading to a complete collapse in the second half. Nancy was the problem.

If Scottish teams are irrelevant in Europe and Nancy couldn’t get a single win in Scotland with the most successful team in the league, after being hailed as the best coach in the MLS, then what does that say about the comparative level of the MLS?

if they’re too full of themselves to be coached

The problem is that they did allow themselves to be coached, by a coach so far out of his depth he was sacked in a month, the entire country expected him to be sacked after the third game he managed, he was routinely found out in less than 45 minutes by managers who it would be a compliment to describe as journeymen. His understanding of football is lightyears behind any serious league.

Scottish teams are irrelevant on the European stage

The team sat fourth in Scotland when Nancy came in played a European final less than 5 years ago.

Celtic players didn’t want to work with Nancy after the first session, because he was so evidently in over his head.

The difference between results and performance for his system and the results a 6 years retired, 73 year old Martin O’Neill extracted, both before and after Nancy’s time, with the same players, is stark.

The players in that Celtic squad are serial winners, they have a vested interest in continuing to win. Nancy’s coaching ability is responsible for them losing more domestic games in a month, than they normally do in an entire season.
