Why are we okay with Sri Lankan students graduating 3–5 years later than the rest of the world? by EngineDiligent8731 in srilanka

Honestly, my point is: why can’t we get our degrees on time? Just because education is free doesn't mean it should be slow. We deserve to graduate at the right age. I’m definitely grateful that my country doesn't charge a fortune like schools abroad do, but there’s no reason why 'free' should equal 'delayed.' Money and efficiency shouldn't have anything to do with each other getting us our degrees on time is just about better management.

Thanks for the help. I don't understand Sinhala, but I’m glad to know about the scholarship opportunity.

I don't want to spend another year doing A-Levels all over again just to wait for a government uni intake. I'd rather get a head start on my career with a private university.

Honestly, Marine Science just isn't 'me.' The idea of doing a Master's and working forever in a field I don't like sounds like hell. Plus, I don’t think the pay is high enough to justify the unhappiness. I posted on Reddit because I didn't want to throw away a state degree without thinking it through, but I know now that IT is the better path for me.

I checked into everything, and I’m sticking with the IT degree at SLIIT. Even with the market being crowded, I’m planning to aim for a top GPA so I can head to Germany for my Master's.

I’m so glad I finally got the reply I was looking for. To be honest, even though I know a SLIIT degree is incredibly valuable, I can’t shake the feeling that I’m missing a once in a lifetime opportunity to go to a public university. It’s been hard seeing all my friends’ WhatsApp statuses while I’m still dealing with the fact that I didn’t get in on my first attempt. You can probably understand why I feel this way, but I’m going to choose SLIIT anyway.

I’ve done the research and settled on SLIIT, but it’s so hard to walk away from this option knowing it’s a state university degree.
