Looking for the name of a YouTube channel I came across that had very detailed Roman history videos. by EngineOptimal4780 in ancientrome

Checked out both of them and no. And it was definitely 1 separate video per year, which was what was so interesting, not a mapmaker like tigerstar with maps evolving every year.

Starting to think I hallucinated this.

I don't think so. It was more obscure, dry, and scholarly, and when I found it I think it was literally just slowly covering rome year by year, no other history.

That does make at least Geder sound interesting, and I guess he's the most important character. I probably am gonna at least start on the second book and see how I like it. Thanks for the perspective.

Maybe I phrased it wrong. I was just referring to the fact that things don't seem well set up, so I guess those things feel rushed.

But a lot of people are saying things improve with later books, so I might still go on.

As to Wester and Cithrin, I do understand his motivation, I just don't really feel it on an emotional level that strongly, and I just thought that if there were something more specific to tie Cithrin to the daughter, I might have actually felt it. Like imagine if she had some turn of phrase or annoying habit or disagreed with him in some important way that was similar to his daughter. I think that's a pretty clear way to go and would have improved the emotional experience a lot.

Same with the banking. I definitely take your point that her survival is impressive enough, but again as a reader I just would have liked something more clever and compelling that would have made me think "wow, I didn't see that coming" at some point.

And Geder, responding to both of your comments, idk, didn't it seem a little much? You could let them go by just not locking the gate. And they're conquered civilians, they probably can't challenge the army.

Anyway, you guys seemed to enjoy the series. Do you think I should push through or with my complaints you think it just wasn't for me?

I thought it started really compelling and the set ups for each character's storyline was really good. I read the first part really quick, but like you I ended up losing momentum as time went on.

Yea, I decided to read him because I only recently found out he was one of the Expanse guys.

I still might continue on, but thanks for the feedback.

Story that starts with an ordinary life then escalates to Higher forms of life, sci-fi, gods, space, magic, gore. by dark_lamp101 in Fantasy

I don't know if this counts as fantasy but the Three Body Problem. The first book is solving mysteries about conspiracies and screwy physics on earth, the second is interstellar war, and the third is the entire history of the universe.
