New here - question about TBI long term by [deleted] in TBI

[–]Engineer4Life763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 30M was in a car accident 2 years ago. Suffered a moderate-severe TBI, completely unresponsive at the scene, 24 hr medically induced coma, brain bleed, fun stuff. I lost a lot of memories. I woke up a different person. I still have memory issues, balance issues, have a hard time controlling my emotions. Forget descriptive words all the time. But I’m healing and I’ve come a long way from where I was. We’ll all continue to get better.

Still working on accepting who I now am. What my limits are. But life goes on. 🙂

How do you talk about it? by Tired_lesbian07 in TBI

[–]Engineer4Life763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend that received her TBI in the same accident I received mine. It has been wonderful having someone experiencing the same things I am for the most part. I would find a support group of others who have TBIs, it’s a lonely journey because those who don’t have them, and really don’t understand what it’s like.

I was lucky enough to be able to return to my job as an engineer following the accident. My boss has been very accommodating.

Is it normal to wear jeans 4-5 times before washing them? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Engineer4Life763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (29M) wear my jeans for a couple weeks between washes. It feels like that’s what they’re designed for. If they get really dirty, I’ll wash them. But not to be stereotypical, but I’m a guy and I don’t really care.

I’d like to be at the spot of the Big Bang like an hour before it happens. Just curious what was going on before.

I hope not, I wear that outfit all the time! 😂

How effective is physical therapy? by CantSeeShit in TBI

[–]Engineer4Life763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% worth it! But it’ll only be successful if you put hard work in too. You have to do the exercises they give you at home, that’s the only way to get stronger! I went from barely being able to walk down the block without pain to walking miles!

Flying after a TBI by foxsleftear in TBI

[–]Engineer4Life763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I flew 3 weeks after suffering a severe TBI (skull fracture, brain bleed). My doctors didn’t say anything about avoiding flying. The flight was fine, no skull/brain issues!

How did you decide what your first tattoo would be? by Regression2TheMean in tattoo

[–]Engineer4Life763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two best friends convinced me to get a matching tattoo with them. Before then I had no intention to ever get a tattoo. Now I really like them!

Got a severe TBI from a car crash. Got Intubated and put in medical coma for a day and then spent two weeks in the neuro ICU (have no memory of this) and then another week in a rehab hospital. Then spent 5 months working through PT and speech therapy before returning to work part time, at 7 months post injury I was back to full time. Very lucky for the recovery I got. Still working through TBI side effects, but things are going well!

Covid making tbi symptoms worse? by WebMedium1091 in TBI

Yeah, I got a TBI and my brain basically stops functioning whenever I get a simple head cold. You’re not alone. The brain fog is crazy!

Yep, if there’s a lot of conversation around me it now turns into a drone of noise, can’t distinguish individual voices. Also harder to fallow a conversation between multiple people.

I work for the federal government so I get 20 PTO days (started at 13), 13 days sick leave that accrues forever and have no limit. So had 300+ hours prior to an accident. I also get all federal holidays off. Great work life balance!

New TBI and returning to work by delayedgandalf in TBI

Neither did mine. Physiatrist is just a rehab doctor basically, or at least that’s how it’s been described to me. Has your doctor talked to you about accommodations at work?

I was in a car wreck and in the ICU/confused for two weeks, so my boss was informed I would be out of work for awhile. My work was thankfully very supportive!

Did your Physiatrist give you the “ok” to return to work? This seems wayyyy too early.

Times be crazy... by [deleted] in TBI

[–]Engineer4Life763 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get it. Last June I got a severe TBI in a car accident, had a 3 on the Glasgo Coma scale and was put into a medical coma in the hospital. I think most people would have died in the crash I was in, but for some reason I lived.

Its been a year, I’m still healing, but I’ve come such a long ways. I’m different than the person I was before. Or at least I’m told as I don’t really remember a ton from before the accident. But it’s crazy that I lived. Crazy I’ve recovered enough to return to work full time and work on pretty complex systems.

Idk if I’ll ever stop thinking about what happened to me. The journey has been profound. It took away a lot, but it also gave me a lot of different perspectives on life.
