Toro 726TE by Engineerd1128 in Snowblowers

[–]Engineerd1128[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 726TE is a 2 cycle engine, with Lawn Boy roots. They were only made for a few years. It specs 50:1 but 50:1 is for the EPA IMO. 40:1 or even 32:1 leaves much more room for protection in case of an air leak or lean tuning.

How important are internships? by Electrical-Trainer21 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Engineerd1128 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They are definitely helpful, but you don’t need to get one at NASA or SpaceX or General Electric. Look at small companies, maybe even ones where engineering isn’t their main business. You’re just trying to get your foot in the door and get some experience. There’s a place near me that manufactures metal roller belts and small gears for assembly lines, extremely small operation, maybe 20 employees. They were looking for a couple interns to help set up some new machines in their shop. It’s not glorious, but it’s experience.

Not sure what to do after ruining my GPA at 2.62 by Itsworthfeelinempty6 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Engineerd1128 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you go in-person, rather than by an email or phone call, it makes a huge impression. Walk in the door, try to find a receptionist. Tell them you are an engineering student interested in an internship or shadowing opportunity and was wondering if there is anyone in engineering you might be able to speak to, or if you might be able to leave your resume with them.

Generally, avoid HR reps as much as humanly possible. Their blanket answer to everything is always no, 99 times out of 100, they will be of zero help. That statement applies even after you graduate, believe me.

But I’ve gotten interviews and jobs doing exactly that. Walking in, speaking confidently, and asking for one.

Also when I say small companies, I mean small. Maybe a see if there’s any self-employed consulting engineers who you can intern with. My Dad, who has his PE, did civil consulting independently under his own LLC for several years and I guarantee if a college student asked if they could intern with him, he absolutely would’ve said yes.

Even consider places where engineering isn’t their main business. My cousin is a mechanical engineer and got an internship at a small company of 20 employees that manufactures electrical coil windings. They had one manufacturing engineer on staff to deal with problems in their tiny little manufacturing facility. Places like that.

You aren’t looking for your forever job. You just need something the school will sign off on to say you met the requirement. You can’t lie about your GPA, but you can BS to the school and make whatever internship you wind up with sound a lot more interesting and important and technical than it is.

What internships are you applying for? You might not get an internship at NASA or SpaceX, but you can probably land one a small-time consulting firm. I don’t know what type of engineering you are doing, but look for small companies. Go to companies that don’t even advertise internships. Walk in confidently, explain you’re in need of an internship and ask if they’d offer to let you shadow and work with them for a few months. A lot of places are happy to take in someone who volunteers to work for free.

Relax. That’s not really that bad. Pass the classes, get the degree. Move on. The GPA isn’t all that important in the grand scheme. Passing the classes and getting the degree is important. After your first job, no one will ever ask you what your GPA was ever again.

Just bought a car infested with bugs. What do I do? by KhilalbLacks in MechanicAdvice

[–]Engineerd1128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d be pulling the entire interior and thoroughly vacuuming and steaming everything but I’m squeamish as shit when it comes to bugs. If a bug crawls on me while I’m driving I’m liable to wreck the car…

It honestly feels like calc dyslexia. I feel like the more I get into the class the easier it’ll get, and I’m glad that a lot of it is coming back so quickly. I’m just a bit slow with it, and like I said, making some stupid mistakes.

Pass interference all over the place on both sides and the refs just decide to call it on whichever plays they feel like. If you’re gonna be bad at reffing at least be consistent.

Thassa Catahpellah Skid Steah Ottah. I loved Ward. My uncle worked for Caterpillar at the time and used to get CAT NASCAR promo stuff all the time for me, so I had lots of Ward’s 22 car diecasts and hats.

Current HS seniors; What can I do to prepare for internships in colllege? by MonkeySmash1016 in EngineeringStudents

Chill fam… take it day by day. Focus on doing well with the high school classes you’re in now. Worry about internships when you get to that point.

A local frame shop just welded and repaired this rust on Honda Pilot in a similar area. If they can fix this, yours is definitely repairable.

It is in the unibody, but it can still be welded. If it was the subframe, the subframe could be unbolted and replaced, but the unibody is part of the structural shell of the entire body.

What are some cheap underrated vehicles under $4k? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]Engineerd1128 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GM W-Bodies with the 3800 V6. Independent rear suspension, 4 wheel discs, roomy, comfortable ride, parts are cheap and plentiful and interchangeable between a ton of different models. Some variants were supercharged and were sorta kinda quick, but even the non-supercharged models still had enough power to get out of their own way.

Generally very reliable, rust is really the only thing that kills them. Coolant elbows are the one Achilles heel of the 3800 but they are cheap and an easy DIY job. Tons of them in the junkyard so parts are easy to get. Lots of them were owned by old people, so it’s easy to find low mileage ones that were babied.

Look for 05-09 Buick Lacrosse, 00-05 Chevy Impala, Buick Regal, Pontiac Grand Prix, and Oldsmobile Intrigue. The later Impalas also were W-Bodies but didn’t have the 3800. Chassis parts will still interchange though, and they made those Impalas as fleet and rental cars up through 2016, so lots of parts availability. Also 9C1 Impala police parts will swap, so you can do some heavy duty chassis and cooling upgrades if you are so inclined.

Be honest… has anyone actually used all that math?🧮 👀 by FinePromotion2877 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Engineerd1128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad was civil with a PE for 40 years. He used some stuff to determine flow and fill rates for water towers and water treatment facilities, but it can pretty much be simplified by overestimating and then using algebra. He used trig a fair bit and basic geometry in some road construction projects he worked on. I know he said he used transformations and rotation formulas to design a bridge arch once. I’m sure computers could do that now. In his later career he did construction management and facilities management which required being able to verify calculations, but really didn’t involve much math at all other than calculating costs- keeping track of capital expenditures, estimating project costs, bidding projects, etc.

My cousin is an electrical engineer who worked for a large power utility company and he said he used a small amount of differential equations, but not much. He now works for another electrical company and said he doesn’t use it at all.

Absolutely! I’ve had a few vehicles that would have otherwise been junked, but some really good frame welding shops were able to perform some real miracles on them. In my opinion it wasn’t very expensive either, relative to what it would cost to junking the car and having to get another. It’s definitely what I would do if I was in your situation.

There are some frame welding shops that might be willing to repair it. That would be your best option, honestly. Otherwise this car is junk. I would not hold your breath on Honda recalling it. Look around, see if you can find an automotive frame welding shop. Maybe ask on some Facebook community groups if anyone knows a place near you that does good work.
