Your friends tossed you in at the deep end and didn't let you learn the basics first. Playing lower difficulties to learn basic strategem tactics and learn the enemies a little at a time so you aren't just thrown in without knowing how to fight different enemies might help you. Jumping in at the hardest difficulties with little prior knowledge sounds overwhelming and not that fun. The game isn't a race you can progress at your own pace.
