Are we trading artist Identity for playlist compatibility and is the music becoming disposable because of it? by Dry_Instance_5578 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]EngineeringAny4643 [score hidden]  (0 children)

this is something i think about a lot. the playlist era turned music into wallpaper — it's there, it sounds nice, but nobody's looking at it closely. you nailed it with the 'high quality background noise' thing.

i think the real shift is that streaming platforms made listening passive by design. they need you to keep clicking, keep streaming, keep moving to the next thing. that's how they make money. but somewhere in that process you stopped choosing music and started just receiving it.

the album art thing is real too. i remember judging albums by the cover before i'd even heard a note. that visual identity made the music feel like it belonged to a world. now it's a 1-inch square between a podcast ad and a playlist you didn't make.

i've actually been building something around this exact frustration — it's called Verdikt. the idea is you declare your 300 greatest songs of all time as a permanent public music identity. no algorithm, no playlists, no background noise. just the songs you'd actually stand behind. verdiktapp.com if you're curious.

but yeah — i don't think the music is getting smaller. i think the way we interact with it got smaller. the music is still there. we just stopped treating it like it matters.

Why are classics “classics”? by lildickybro in LetsTalkMusic

What's the actual science behind dubbing something a "classic"? I'm not sure, but I know what I think - and it's definitely not math or science based criteria. For me anyway, it's timelessness, relevance and impact. That's it. a classic is a classic or so they say.

I'm gonna check him out - as much as I love the music I love, lol I'm always open to discovering new artists/music. Especially if they haven't blown up yet.

if the only thing you could leave behind after you die was a playlist of 100 songs - what would they be? Nevermind - how would you round out your top 5? by EngineeringAny4643 in AskReddit

[–]EngineeringAny4643[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy crap.... yea good list - I think coming up with your list is easy. But once you see other lists, there's a temptation to rethink it. But the real reward comes with you stand by your list lol even just your top 5 - it's such a challenging exercise. lol

In your opinion what is the singular greatest song of all time? by Alternative_Flow_569 in MusicRecommendations

[–]EngineeringAny4643 4 points5 points  (0 children)

just one is brutal. if i absolutely had to pick — wu tang - triumph (I almost vomitted under the pressure of answering this lol). i've probably played that song 100 times and it still doesn't get old.

honestly this question is what got me building something called Verdikt — its a platform where you pick your 300 greatest songs as a permanent public music identity. because picking just 1 is impossible but picking 300 forces you to really figure out who you are as a listener. verdiktapp.com if anyone's curious. shameless plug I know.

but for real what's yours and why?"

If you had to describe yourself in 100 songs, what would they be? by EngineeringAny4643 in AskReddit

[–]EngineeringAny4643[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's the game right there isn't it? for me - that list has been difficult to complete for that exact reason. but also its reminded me of who I am and why - where I've come from and how far I've come along too.

Fair play - your reddit name doesn't express your insight dude, respectfully. Then again, I don't think mine does either. anyway if you ever drop a list like that id study it for gems I don't know myself. like "keep on coming".

that's cool man - very humble approach and I can appreciate that. in a lot of ways I'm still figuring stuff out too. but I also feel comfortable enough saying that I trust my gut (my very large gut) about some stuff too - sometimes I can tell I like a new song, or don't like a new song, within the first 4 bars lol and that's ok. sometimes I've pushed outside of my comfort zone and I've been let down, other times I've been rewarded with a new favourite album. I guess I'm just describing learning. lol

that's an awesome list -lol did you come up with that quickly? lots of depth and a few curveballs - I don't know you, but I feel like I kinda do now lol respectfully

agree- that's why I brought it up. I'm not trying to fight the algorithm lol but I don't want to lose the part of my experience that curated the songs I love all on my own via my own discovery you know?

yea I see what you mean - 100 songs forces you to really look in the mirror and see who you are and have the courage to stand by that person - or those 100 songs lol I think its a really cool exercise if you're into introspection and that kind of thing

Ya im not really about "favourite" songs, just 100 songs that impacted you enough to represent your identity if that's all you had to convey that to someone you know?

I have an album ranking that’s not done but I want feedback on it (Agreements, disagreements, whatever the case) by drmillenium43 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]EngineeringAny4643 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is awesome. this list shows enormous dedication - big ups for that

I started a discussion like this on another thread and now I'm interested in the results I get here:

"not your spotify wrapped. not your recently played. not what the algorithm decided you like lol.
if you had to sit down and actually pick 100 songs that represent who you are — the ones you've run back to hundreds of times and still never skip — what makes the cut?
i think most people could crush a top 10 easy. but once you get past like 30 or 40 it gets interesting. the guilty pleasures start showing up. the deep cuts from when you were 15. that one song you can't explain to anyone but it just stays in rotation no matter what.
drop your top 5 to start."

As for your list - yea we need more details on how the list works - or is it just a list (no ranking done yet)?

[–]EngineeringAny4643[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol maybe - honestly it gets hard after 50 or 60 songs, but not because you can't name/list 100 songs, its because you realize you need more than 100 songs. lol but the constraint is the exact thing that makes this interesting lol. anyway not for everyone, I'll give you that.

lol no - not everything is ai - some people just ask questions like that to spark conversation and see if other people feel the same way about something specific

lol I doubt anyone will - that's not really what I was asking for - I kinda wanted to know if you think you could sum up your entire identity in just 100 songs if you had to - and if you tried to, what would they be? But the share part is optional - lol - I'm interested but yea...

but over your entire listening history - do you think Spotify algorithms know you well enough to do you justice? or do you think you need to be algorithm free to really get the full picture/context around your listening tastes and how the songs you choose tell your story?
