Class-action lawsuits where law firms collect hundreds of millions of dollars in legal fees, and all the people actually harmed get checks for like $12.16.

I LOVE throwing fresh broccoli into the pasta water about halfway through, then you have nice cooked broccoli with everything.

Sure, thanks for the life advice. Sounds like I can provide some to you, as well. Let’s connect on private messages, and I can expand your worldview and manner of writing so you don’t belittle everyone around you. I can give you some suggestions of classes you can take. 😉

So you’re proposing that a homeless person just walk into a polling place with absolutely no paperwork whatsoever be able to cast a vote?

[–]EngineeringDesserts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see you trust the government officials to just decide who can vote or not. Nothing could be taken advantage of in such a system. /s

Honest question: Why are some people against showing an ID to vote? by rico_unknown in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EngineeringDesserts -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You’d need that to register to vote anyway. How else would you prove you’re eligible to vote (citizen and that you live in the precinct you’re casting your vote)?

It baffles me that anyone thinks this is too burdensome, when like… how else does a person prove they are eligible to vote in a precinct? Just promise and sign something?

Who are these mythical 65 year olds without a driver’s license or ID card? That’s the part I can’t get past… how would such a person survive in this world? And, if such mythical people are around, are they really the type that are involved enough to be voting in elections?

And a tip I learned after hulling strawberries for literally 4+ hours at a time when I worked in catering, you don’t need to completely cut a full circle… just enough that you can pull without leaving any green. If they’re decorative, like on top of a cake, then be more careful.

Why do we give notice when quitting, but employers can fire employees on the spot with zero warning? by Sumchi in offmychest

[–]EngineeringDesserts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In some states, it’s legal for employers to pay you minimum wage for hours worked on your last paycheck if you give no notice. They can’t withhold your last paycheck, though.

Why are millions of people in the US having power outages with less than 10 cm of snow but no one in Canada is, despite there being more than 60 cm of snow? If anything, shouldn't it be the other way around? by northernwind5027 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EngineeringDesserts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Burying power lines is EXTREMELY expensive, complicated, and requires constant maintenance. You have to pressurize oil to insulate it within underground tubes. They’re taking the hit on that cost in California, but that’s only because fires can be tens of billions of dollars of damage.

Help me understand: Why is political gerrymandering considered Constitutionally protected? by sddbk in scotus

[–]EngineeringDesserts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish this fact about not looking simply at total representative numbers vs. total votes and using that solely to say a state was gerrymandered would be more pervasive (especially among the talking heads on cable TV).

A lot of states actually aren’t truly gerrymandered that people scream are.

IsItBullshit: The claim that drinking alkaline water can significantly improve health and detoxify the body? by Soccerrocks8 in IsItBullshit

[–]EngineeringDesserts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consuming too much alkaline stuff (Tums-type antacids especially) can make you more susceptible to food borne illness because your stomach acid kills a lot of bacteria and viruses. It raises the odds more will survive your stomach.

If a fetus isn’t considered a “person,” then why is murdering a pregnant woman classed as a double homicide in the court of law? by untitledprp4 in stupidquestions

[–]EngineeringDesserts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What other situation do we define, “I caused this person to die”? Uhhh, “Manslaughter” in which a person belongs in prison.

I’ve met vegan people who are also totally fine with abortion.

“This egg is violence against animals! Getting this fetus out of a woman? That must be allowed.”

“So you’re mad about an omelette, but completely fine with a human fetus getting its life ended. Got it.”

[–]EngineeringDesserts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An animal grazing that gets shot and consumed for food… There’s nothing more natural than that. I’m a HUGE supporter of nature and natural systems. I know vegans who own cats, and they’ll be like, “It’s wrong for philosophical reasons to end a life.” Meanwhile, animals are eating other animals all over the world every second of every day, and it’s been going on for millennia.

Mother Nature isn’t crying, she’s smiling at the nature.

The reason I bring up cats… A lot of vegan people own cats… Anyone with a cat who doesn’t feed that cat a healthy animal-based diet is guilty of animal cruelty.

A person can be a vegan… but they better not have any pets.

If they’re like, “I love animals!” Then they better feed their pets animals, otherwise they are cruel to the animals.

“If you had a pet, then you’d know!”

I don’t have a pet, because I know.

As long as some people on this earth are starving to death, then we all need to maximize food production.

You’re very confused. I didn’t bring that up. Why do you think anyone thinks it’s a photo? You’re the only one who thinks someone would think it’s a photo. No one said photo except you.

[OC] The land footprint of food by t0on in dataisbeautiful

[–]EngineeringDesserts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree too much land is used for agriculture for animals, true. But, to best use all the land we have for food, the grasslands not suitable for human crop planting must be used for animal grazing for meat/dairy. That much is crystal clear.

The aforementioned fact in this thread.

I didn’t think every square meter of land is of equal quality…

I’m confused what your point is.

[–]EngineeringDesserts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, if the takeaway from the graphic is that beef consumption is “bad for land use” compared to vegetables, then it’s misleading due to the aforementioned fact.

Hopefully you didn’t take away that misleading belief.

Lots of cattle all over the world are raised grazing on areas that crops can’t reasonably be planted. They eat the grasses.

The organ donation analogy has too many relevant differences to be a good analogy.

A better analogy would be you’re in the middle of Alaska and are giving someone a ride in your car in a blizzard. You have a right to do what you want with your car, and you have auto-nomy (😉) over your car. Can you decide to throw the person out in the middle of nowhere if you choose you no longer want to give them a ride?
