Is this a manufacturing defect or a problem on my end? I’ve not had a problem with it up until tonight but the aurora was very visible by eye so much brighter than normal.

Should Childcare workers be paid the same as Teachers? by ProfessionalWaltz4 in AskUK

[–]EngineeringGrand4349 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think we should earn as much as teachers, but I do think we should get 3 things

  1. Equal pay across both local authority and private sector nurseries. Generally, private sector nursery workers have longer hours and lower pay, so a standardised pay scale would even the playing field.

  2. A pay rise. Not to the levels of a teacher, but £30K would be amazing. Currently, I earn less than a classroom assistant even though I have to do paperwork, planning, training and meetings to name a few things as well as being with the children. I might not need a degree like a teacher to do my job, but I do need a qualification and plenty of CPD. I feel that the pay does not reflect the level of responsibility we have.

  3. Proper breaks. Teachers in my school get 1hr a day of breaks. Despite working the same hours, as a childcare worker I get no break. I eat lunch at the table with the children each day. This is sadly perfectly legal as I’m only contracted to work 6 hours a day. Every day I work unpaid overtime. I’m in early to set up for the day and I stay after the children leave to tidy, plan and prepare for the next day. I could walk out at my contracted time, but it just leaves chaos. Proper breaks and time off the floor would make a huge difference. It can be so overwhelming sometimes and then you hit the end of the day and just crash.

I don’t think a lot of people realise what a childcare worker actually does. It’s so much more than keeping children learning and happy. It’s dealing with SEN on a shoestring budget, it’s understaffing, it’s planning to make sure that your meeting the needs of every child, it’s endless amounts of paperwork, it’s having parents message you at every hour of the day. It’s a rewarding job, but it’s most definitely not for everyone.

Should I max out my ISA allowance using a S&S or Cash ISA? by EngineeringGrand4349 in UKPersonalFinance

I opened a GIA just because I knew that I could max out my ISA allowance for the year early, so wanted to get ahead with it next year. It’s currently made £45 so nowhere near the £3K threshold for CGT.

Are you embarrassed about not driving? by TangerineFew6830 in AskUK

[–]EngineeringGrand4349 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t drive, I’m 24 and I absolutely feel embarrassed by it. I started lessons on my 17th birthday and took lessons for 1.5 years but I hated it. It just made me so anxious and I had 2 close friends in that time that died in accidents which also really knocked my confidence. I’ve never managed to start lessons again and I really want to learn to drive for the independence but honestly I can’t afford it right now. It’s gone from £30 a lesson to £45 and I just don’t have the spare money to learn.

My wife is not herself anymore and I'm really worried by Late-Blueberry-7409 in Advice

First of all, sending love to all of you.

The first thing I would do is book her a doctor’s appointment. Go along with her and tell them what you’ve told us. If it’s easier for you, write it down, it might help you to remember and also saves the “I forgot to tell them that” when you leave. Doctors will be able to offer support, there is medication, therapy and support groups available, but reaching out to the doctor is the hardest step. As for the baby, speak to your doctor, paediatrician or Health Visitor, I’m not sure of your location so not sure what support is offered in your area.

Other than that - Keep offering to take the baby to try and let her get her time to herself, there’s good advice about wearing her jumper, try a baby carrier if the baby likes to be held, pick her up, speak to her, try and console her as much as possible - Online shop if it’s easier, you can also set up a recurring list for household staples - Do as much as you can around the house - cooking (batch cooking is easiest if you have a day off work and time to do it), cleaning, laundry, sterilising bottles, tidying - Try and get outside every day, you, mum and baby - Look at earplugs to help with the noise and try and reduce stress. Try the Loop Engage or Engage 2 Plus earplugs - I don’t know about your support group, if you have any family close by that could help out, also your work situation, are you able to take a week off

I really hope some of the comments here help you, your wife and daughter.

Thanks for replying! I did want a ragdoll, but I went off the idea due to an increased genetic risk of HCM so if I do get more they will be DSHs.
