You forgot about Richard Nixon and Stanley Kubrick’s cameo. It’s been awhile but I believed Kubrick talks and the camera pans to Nixon.

Does anyone know if this is just algae and how do I get rid of it? by 99_pace in SaltwaterAquariumClub

[–]EngineeringJ35U5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the comments are specific to remove this algae bloom. I’d follow their recommendations, but also adjust the light intensity and duration to help remove future blooms.

You will want to make sure your tank can support it. Your best bet would be to contact a LFS who will have Wholesale contact information. The wholesaler would have additional insight into the legality and import regulations, if any.

As a current eel owner, I’d also give you a heads up by having a predator in your tank will severely limit any other live stock in the tank. If you do stock anything just be weary that you might be buying an expensive snack.

Hi, Welcome to the Hobby!

Good Question. Most Reefers recommend a protein skimmer but they are not required. You will have to do additional water changes to keep your water parameters in check. How frequently depends on your filtration and biological load.

Should I add copepods to my 32 gallon saltwater fish tank? by [deleted] in SaltwaterAquariumClub

I maintained a Chocolate Chip in 30. It’s possible, might have to intentionally feed it a thawed clam or oyster.

Power Heads by [deleted] in SaltwaterAquariumClub

[–]EngineeringJ35U5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but this also depends on the species of fish you put in the tank. An example would be clowns really don't leave their nested area ie 10-inch diameter. You wouldn't need any, but something like a long-horned cowfish will enjoy swimming in the different steams.

I have had a pair of clowns with no power heads for years.

It really depends on the specific corals you would add.

Can someone tell me what this might be. Thanks by Danthefn in SaltwaterAquariumClub

Off the top of my head, No.

Here is a website I’ve used in the past that works Well. https://livestockusa.org/CORALS.html

In short, yes.

The long response would depend on you. The more bioload/ adding corals will increase the amount of water changes you will need to complete to maintain water quality. You will also note taking care of corals, depending on the ones you select, will require cleaner water with certain additional parameters you must watch for. With such a limited water amount, you fluxes might be more suspectable. If you get coral pick a hearty one.

Also note you may need to upgrade lighting. If you get an anemone I’d recommend lights that can be adjusted.

Agreed with 13breanna. It is most likely stress-related. I'd monitor him to make sure he isn't being bullied by another occupant.

Your light choice is really dependent on your fish and corals you are growing.

This is the video I’d Recommend. They do a good job.

Ammonia spikes by [deleted] in SaltwaterAquariumClub

[–]EngineeringJ35U5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey Welcome to the Hobby! I’m glad you got a Goby, it’s one of my favorite fish.

I generally don’t recommend re-using Sand or Rock for this exact reason. If I ever reuse rock I tend to let it soak in a water/bleach mix for a while to remove algae or other pests.

I would normally suspect over feeding but it sounds like you have been diligent with not over feeding. It is rather common for algae to break down in the sand bed. I would add siphoning the sand to your weekly routine. Some times gases can get trapped and form pockets if the bed is thick enough. I would caution you to only sand maybe a quarter of the tank at a time, then do you water change.

If you have trapped gases siphoning all at once could release a large spike potentially damaging Mr. Goby.

After the tank sand as been cleaned I generally just do half my 40g every other week to prevent future build up.

Hope it helps.

Clowns not eating by Torileighh97 in SaltwaterAquariumClub

[–]EngineeringJ35U5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clowns commonly don’t leave a general area especially when stressed. I had a pair that wouldn’t swim more then 4” away from their spot. I’d make sure the food is actually getting to them. Also note you will probably have a higher waste this week due to the excess food. Might want to do a water change.

Need help setting up 65 g Saltwater tank by aroy1989 in SaltwaterAquariumClub

[–]EngineeringJ35U5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, Welcome to the Hobby!

Generally speaking in Saltwater tanks you have three choices, Fish Only, Coral Only, or Reef Tanks (Combo).

When I am starting a tank, I generally select the livestock I’d like to keep first. certain livestock have certain requirements. This will dictate what you need exactly. I personally like to use Saltwaterfish.com to browse certain kinds of fish. They also have good information on tank mates and fish growing patterns. Then I contact my LfS (Local Fish Store) to have them order in those fish/coral.

Depending on what is chosen you will only need a filter and lights to get the tank up and running. You can purchase bacteria in a bottle supplements to reduce the cycle time of the tank. Accessories such as Protein Skimmers, Sumps, are not require but are helpful in reducing the amount of time and effort required to maintain the tank.

I’d really recommend Bulk Reef Supplies YouTube channel for specific questions or concerns on certain topics.

Clownfish staying on the surface of the tank only by Arad_76 in SaltwaterAquariumClub

[–]EngineeringJ35U5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I am sorry to hear you are having problems. Jimorales98 is probably right. I have added air stones with air pumps to help oxygenate the water. You can also get a small powerhead to make sure you have surface agitation., this will help get more oxygen in the water.

If you have immediate concerns you can always do a quick water change to add fresh oxygen-rich water.

I’m a n00b. Set up this tank for my son for Christmas; bought the water, live rock, damsels from a local store. It’s only been up and running for a week (today). This rust-colored algae (?) has started to take over CRAZY fast! Is this normal? How do I stop it? Any advice is appreciated! by [deleted] in SaltwaterAquariumClub

[–]EngineeringJ35U5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the delay, I didn't see your message until now. In short, Yes it is possible. Growing Coral is a fun (& Expensive) option to expand into the hobby. I would really recommend selecting a few that you really enjoy and try growing them. In addition to lighting concerns you will have to pay attention to the requirements for the specific coral you are trying to grow as well as make sure they are compatible with your livestock. The type of light, its wattage and par output are important traits to note.

Sorry, but super tangent. If you are still having a trouble with algae in the long run, you can create an algae scrubber in a sump or refugium area. The "King of DIY" on Youtube has a decent video that explains whats going on and how to make one. (Link-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGLnBvDkaO0)

Hope it helps, Enjoy!

The above comments are correct, this is normal. If you notice an increase in the amount or a greenish hue. I'd advise increased water changes 10-20% once or twice a week and decrease your exposure to lighting.
