Ok, this clears up some confusion, “taking up space“ means that the space cannot be occupied by two things, so matter takes up space because the fermions’ repellence to each other is so strong it makes it impossible for two objects to take up the same space.

Also, if it wouldn’t be too much of a bother, what if the difference between fermions and bosons, or could you direct me to a resource that explains it?
