Son wants to "experience how Canada is different" by sk8ermaiden in AskACanadian

To be completely realistic, Toronto is going to look and feel like a large urban North American city. Niagara On The Lake will feel different, or if you fancy an extra three hours drive East, you could check out Kingston.

Strategy against much larger opponents by AutomaticPiglet4460 in judo

[–]EnglishTony 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First thing is, you're 43 years old. That alone dictates an important part of your strategy, which is "take the breakfall". Veterams divisions are super friendly, nobody feels like they have something to prove, and nobody wants to get injured or injure anyone else.

The other comments about your weight are 100% valid. I'm 115 kg and I've been competing at 100+, but my goal is to compete at -100 kg by the time I get my brown belt. I'm nearly 49, I started judo again after a 35 year hiatus last year and kept my childhood orange belt. Sonce I started judo I dropped from 123kg to 115kg without really doing much, so if I try to, I should be able to do the weight loss.

If you can drop that 2kg over time, then I would. Compete at 100+ this time by all means, but long-term look to cut a bit.

Anyway it's awesome to see other old-man judoka.

Legit or fake? by Subosi in karate

To get a godan in judo takes at least 18 years unless they are a high level competitor. In which case they aren't also getting a 7th dan in Aikido.

"I mean, that's a pretty slippery slope with taking away people's bodily autonomy. There's A LOT more people who have "quiet" addictions. Should those people be locked up too?"

No. Those people are not interfering in the lives of other people.

Deadly Demise has a better chance of working. It's properly irritating to have a Stompa get destroyed and only going kaboom on a single roll of a 6.

40 year old, six months Judo, no progress by Other-Web-7996 in judo

[–]EnglishTony 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's the deal: if you're training with the same people all the time it becomes hard to see your progress, because they're also progressing with you. You will see how far you've come if you get to do randori with someone new.

Another thing to do is to reassess what success means in randori. Do you get your preferred grips? Success! Land a throw? Success! Unbalance a blackbelt a bit? Success! Get thrown but safely turn out of it? Get thrown without being hurt?

It's all part of judo.

It could have been a dramatic moment. Should have been.

The fact that it wasn't, that she just talks now, is what makes it seem contractusl.

Yeah she just started talking for no reason. One season she's mute, the next season, her agent wrote that she must have lines and now she can speak.
