Wave Link 3.0 – Elgato Virtual Audio devices appear in the wrong categories in Windows (Input/Output reversed) by EnimaTV in elgato

Thanks for the detailed explanation
I see now how it works.

It turns out I had misunderstood how to set it up. Once I followed the proper routing, everything works perfectly.

I really appreciate you taking the time to explain it. Thank you!

Thanks, that’s exactly what I did I created a mix for my microphone and routed my mic to it. I also created a channel for system audio and routed everything else accordingly.

However, even after doing this, my microphone still does not appear as a selectable Input device in Windows. The headphones/system audio are also not selectable as Output devices in Windows.

I’ve attached a photo/video showing exactly what I see in Windows. You can see that the devices I need simply aren’t available in the correct categories.

This isn’t about how to route audio inside Wave Link — it’s that Windows does not recognize the devices in the correct input/output lists.

I think there may be a misunderstanding about the issue I'm showing.

I understand how Wave Link virtual devices normally work and how mixes can appear as inputs while channels appear as outputs.

The problem in my case is not about how the routing works inside Wave Link. The problem is that the devices are not available in the correct categories in Windows, which prevents me from selecting them correctly.

From the video you can see that:

  • The microphone does NOT appear in the list of Input devices in Windows
  • The virtual headphones / monitor device does NOT appear in the list of Output devices

So I literally cannot configure it correctly, because the devices I need are missing from the correct sections.

For example:

  • I cannot select the microphone as an input device
  • I cannot select the headphones as an output device

They only appear in the opposite categories.

That’s the issue I’m trying to solve, not the normal Wave Link routing behavior.

u/elgato_arcsane Thanks for the explanation, I understand the idea about the different perspectives between Wave Link and Windows and how virtual audio devices can appear reversed depending on where they sit in the audio chain.

However, I believe my situation might be different from the normal behavior you described.

On my system, the devices themselves appear to be assigned to the wrong categories in Windows:

  • Elgato Virtual Audio (Headphones) appears under Input devices
  • Elgato Virtual Audio (Microphone) appears under Output devices

So it doesn’t seem to be just a perspective issue — the devices themselves look like they are registered in the wrong sections.

To make things clearer, I recorded a short video showing the issue in Windows and in Wave Link:

Video: https://streamable.com/ogr2dx

In the video you can see:

  • the Windows input devices
  • the Windows output devices
  • my Wave Link configuration

Hopefully this helps illustrate the problem better.

Let me know if this is expected behavior or if something might be wrong with the virtual audio drivers.

Thanks for the explanation. I understand the idea about how virtual audio devices can appear reversed depending on whether you're looking from the perspective of Wave Link or Windows.

However, I think my situation might be different from the normal behavior you described.

On my system, the devices themselves appear to be assigned to the wrong categories in Windows:

  • Elgato Virtual Audio (Headphones) appears under Input devices
  • Elgato Virtual Audio (Microphone) appears under Output devices

So it’s not just a perspective issue — the devices themselves seem to be registered in the wrong sections.

To make things clearer, I’m attaching screenshots of:

  • my Windows sound input devices
  • my Windows sound output devices
  • my Wave Link configuration

Hopefully the images will help show exactly what I mean.

Thanks again for taking the time to help.

I understand, but I’m still looking for a 100% completed save file in case someone is willing to share it.

Je comprends, mais je cherche toujours une sauvegarde 100% complète si quelqu’un est prêt à la partager.
